Live music has an undeniable power over partygoers. When guests not only hear the bass but actually see the drummer giving it his all, they can't help but feel more alive. If you're planning an event and want to treat your guests to a unique show, consider alternative rock bands. Alternative rock bands are talented musicians who play a popular genre—think Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Violent Femmes, Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay, and Goo Goo Dolls, to name a few. Alternative music has broad appeal because it's inspired by folk music, classic rock, reggae, electronic music, and jazz. And it's perfect for an event because it's a dynamic, driving style of music that keeps guests on their feet and even singing along.

Finding the Cream of the Crop
You need to be selective when you search for alternative rock bands for your event. An online or Yellow Pages search will reveal hundreds, but it's likely a good chunk of them are amateur musicians who haven't played a gig outside of their mom's garage. Look for well-rehearsed professional groups who are no strangers to the stage. And if they've done several private events, you've hit the jackpot.

Start by asking family, friends, and coworkers for recommendations. Try polling your social circle on Facebook or other networking sites to find out if anyone has seen excellent alternative rock bands at local bars, festivals, or parties. Also, your other event vendors may be able to offer suggestions. After all, they've been to more events than any of us! If you're still looking for names, check out online resources.

Alternative Rock Bands for Events: Some Helpful Tips
The cost of live entertainment depends on factors like event date, location, and size—not to mention the band's experience, popularity, and equipment. Because alternative rock bands cost anywhere from $600 to $6,000 and up, you should first determine your budget. Music can make or break a party, so you won't regret spending a bit more for experience and quality. Here are some additional tips for selecting alternative rock bands for your event.

Watch a performance. It's essential that you view a live performance, rehearsal, or recently recorded show. Look for exceptional audio, dynamic stage presence, and evidence that the band cares whether the audience is having fun. It should be a tight performance by talented, enthusiastic musicians who have excellent chemistry. If the musicians appear bored, careless, or even too wild for your tastes, simply move to the next candidate. You don't want the headache of dealing with unprofessional entertainers. Watch the crowd as well. Do you they look similar to the group you expect at your event? Are they having fun?

Know what specific style you want. Alternative music ranges from melancholy to manic, so think about what sound you want at your party. Consider the time of day, duration, guest list, and location to help you decide. For example, if you're having a twenty-year reunion party for the class of 1992, maybe a Pearl Jam cover band would hit the spot. If you need a band with broader, more mainstream appeal, perhaps seek alternative rock bands that compare their style to U2 or R.E.M. There's a band to suit every event; it just takes a little digging.

Hire experienced musicians. You want experienced, professional alternative rock bands that have played many shows to diverse audiences—and rocked them all! Ask the band what kind of events they typically play, including what gigs they most prefer. If you need the bandleader to act as your emcee, inquire about his experience and skills in that area. Plus, alternative rock bands should have top-quality equipment, from microphones to guitars to speakers.

Talk to the band's front-person. Experts recommend that specifics related to the performance should be coordinated with the bandleader, rather than relying on the band's agent to be the middleperson. So if you're talking to the agent, find out how you can meet the bandleader who will be a fairly central figure at your event. A charismatic front-person is critical to your event; she reads the audience and guides the band in changing gears quickly to keep your guests happy.

Ask about the contingency plan. You just never know. It's likely that you're booking your band well in advance. The drummer could have a family emergency or a primary amplifier could blow. The band must have a plan for such situations and be able to assure you that they'll be up to speed by your event.

Check references. When possible, ask for references from clients who hired the band for an event similar to yours. Otherwise, ask for the names of managers at venues they've played.

Remember with whom you're dealing. Performers can be, well, unpredictable. You may be hiring musicians who regularly stay up late working in a party atmosphere. Perhaps they play in a few bands or hold a day job. My point is, when you hire alternative rock bands, get everything in a contract. Leading up to your event, call to remind them of the schedule and to ensure that they're on track to perform. And it can't hurt to have a backup plan (such as a DJ, stocked iPod, or backup band).

    Now Get Ready to Rock!
Just be sure to do your due diligence and get a detailed contract when you've chosen a band, and it should be smooth sailing. Your guests will greatly appreciate your decision to hire an alternative rock band. They'll get the chance to let their hair down and rock out to a live show!
