Though the Bay Area has of one of the most desirable climates in the country, no environment is mild enough that your roof will last forever. At some point, every roof will need to be replaced, and the material you choose for your new roof can have a dramatic effect on the overall efficiency of your home. In Oakland, roof installation is a project that takes many different forms. Where other areas of the country might be home to one or two common types of roofing materials, Oakland homes are topped with just about every material on the market! While the mild climate might give Bay Area homeowners more options when it comes to roof installation, Oakland residents should still be aware of the benefits and drawbacks of each material — both when initially installed and over its lifetime.

Common Materials for Roof Installation in Oakland
Asphalt shingles, the most popular roofing material in the country, can be found on many Oakland homes. Though less durable than some other options, asphalt is easy to install and relatively inexpensive both in initial price and in repair costs. Metal roofing is extremely durable and often carries a warranty of 40 or more years. A little more costly than asphalt, metal roofing will also require some additional insulation to be effective. One nice aspect of metal roofing is that it can often be installed directly on top of asphalt shingles without requiring additional structural support; this is not only convenient, but it will also keep the insulate qualities of the underlying material intact.

Less common in other parts of the country, but easily found in Oakland, are wood and tile roofs. Each looks fantastic, but has its own drawbacks. Wood roofing is affordable and attractive, but will probably not last as long as some other roofing options; additionally, wood roofs are likely to require more maintenance over their lifetimes than roofs made of other materials. Tile is very expensive, but has been known to last 70 years or more! It can be difficult to work on because it is very brittle. Tile is also heavy, so its installation might also necessitate installing additional support.

Hiring a Contractor for Oakland Roof Installation
Here at HomeAdvisor, one thing we hear over and over again when it comes to roof installation (in Oakland as well as all over the country) is to get several different quotes from several different contractors. Especially in Oakland, roof installation is such a varied and diverse project that the cost and performance of one contractor is likely to be far different from those of other companies. Don't be afraid to ask for references and talk to former customers; sometimes, talking to others who have had work done by a particular company can be far more helpful in making your decision than anything else!

Cost of Roof Installation in Oakland
With the vast differences in the size of each project as well as different material costs you find in the Bay Area, an "average" cost for roof installation can be a bit misleading. In general, you can expect asphalt shingles to be the least expensive, traditional tile to be the most costly, and metal and wood roofing costs to come in somewhere in the middle. When looking at Bay Area roof installation prices, HomeAdvisor has processed jobs that range anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000. Remember, however, when pricing different roofing materials, to take into account that some (like wood, for example) will have additional costs in the long run due to more frequent maintenance needs.
