There are many problems that can arise on a carpeted floor: stains and burns are certainly common, but wrinkles, holes, cuts, and loose or fraying seams also make the list. If any of these problems is severe enough, it might not be possible to simply repair them. In many cases, however, you may be able to fix the carpet in your home rather than go through the hassle of replacing it prematurely (and for those renters out there, you might be able to get that security deposit back without having to spend an arm and a leg).
Standard Solutions for Common Carpet Problems
For small burns and holes, or for small stains that simply will not come out, a "cut and plug" technique is often used to fix the problem. Pretty much exactly like it sounds, the offending area is cut out and is replaced by a piece of matching carpet that is hot glued in. If no matching carpet is available, this method can often use a section of carpet from an out of the way area (such as a closet) to fill the void in an area that's more noticeable. Seam repairs may also involve cutting a strip out where the seam is loose and hot gluing it back into place.
For loose or wrinkled carpet, you may be able to have the carpet restretched to make it taut and smooth. This method doesn't work for all scenarios. It generally works best when the carpet was installed using a perimeter of gripper strips and was a high quality carpet to begin with.
Berber carpet is extremely durable and is a good choice for the heavy soil and high traffic common to Philadelphia. Carpet repair for Berber usually deals with its biggest drawback: Berber tends to snag easily. When Berber carpet fibers snag and the fiber comes loose, transplant fiber can actually be put into its place.

Measures to Avoid Carpet Repair in Philadelphia
No matter how careful you are, company, pets, and children can't help but pose a serious threat to a well-managed carpet (and since most of us don't live in a vacuum, one of these is bound to affect you at some point). There are some things you can do to prevent many common carpet problems that don't involve selling your kids or dogs (or giving your friends the cold shoulder when they want to watch the Eagles game).
Spills, of course should be soaked up ASAP. If you notice a small snag, you should cut it off at its base before it is noticeable. If the loop of fiber gets pulled again, you could end up with a run in your carpet a foot or two long. Probably the most important thing you can do, however, is supplement your normal vacuuming schedule with a visit from a professional carpet cleaner. The dirt that vacuums often miss can actually cut and slice carpet fibers, leading to balding and premature wear. Especially after a Philadelphia winter, it's a good idea to call in the pros to remove the dirt and grit that's easy to miss.
Philadelphia Carpet Repair Prices
When you compare costs for carpet repair, Philadelphia prices are pretty consistent with the national average of $200. Philadelphia carpet installation, however, is often one or two thousand bucks more than the national average of $1,600. It, therefore, makes sense for southeastern Pennsylvanians to have their carpet repaired once or twice before they replace it. Those looking to lengthen the life of their carpet even more should note that a professional cleaning generally costs only $100 or $200 and, once again, is truly a good way to extend your carpet's life expectancy.Jon Nunan is a freelance writer who draws on his experience in construction, ranging from landscaping to log home building, for his articles on home improvement.
