Maybe you prefer brushstrokes to Kodachrome. There are literally hundreds of wallpaper murals taken directly from paintings ranging from classic to abstract. While purchasing a painting large enough to fill an entire wall would be both costly and difficult to hang, wallpaper murals are very reasonably priced.

Window Murals: A Room with a View?
Window murals are made in a trompe l'oeil (literally, to fool the eye) style. Basically, they are very detailed pictures of window frames that look out on different scenes; often they are so convincing that, to be exposed as a picture, they need to be examined up close. If you live in Milwaukee, but want to have a nice view of the Pyramids, a window mural can make it happen (or at least make it look like it's happening).

Custom Window and Wallpaper Murals
Some wallpaper mural and many window mural companies will do custom jobs. You send them a photograph, and as long as it isn't copy-written, they will make it into a mural. Though digital photos are quickly becoming the norm, unless you took the picture with a very high-end digital camera, they will probably prefer a conventional photograph because they are easier to enlarge.

Quality Issues and Installation
As with many things, when it comes to window and wallpaper murals, you get what you pay for. Since they are much smaller than other murals, window murals are pretty easy to find in a very durable, but cost effective form. When dealing with murals that will take up a whole wall, however, take special care in looking at the specs of what you're buying. Some wallpaper murals are made of sturdy vinyl or vinyl covered fabric; others are made of paper.

Installation of window and wallpaper murals varies by company, and by price. Some will come with adhesive backing. Some adhesive will have to be mixed or bought separately. Murals are often made differently than regular wallpaper, so make sure to follow the directions very carefully to ensure optimum adhesion and durability.
