San Diego Window Coverings

Though a window is nice on its own, in order to make it as appealing (and, perhaps surprisingly, as efficient) as possible, it is important to choose the right window coverings. San Diego is full of beautiful views, so the window treatment you get should be functional as well as attractive. There are a number of options when it comes to window coverings, and finding the perfect fit for your particular needs can be a lot of fun. With all of the choices available, however, it's often helpful to have a general idea of what you want before you go out looking for it.

Common Coverings

Curtains and Drapes
Classic in design, but still incredibly popular, drapes and curtains make an excellent choice for a window covering in San Diego. Depending on their thickness and design, a curtain or drape will be able to allow a soft glowing light to enter your window or block out the light completely. They are available in an incredible number of colors, styles, and patterns, and can be fashioned from just about any kind of fabric you can think of.

Blinds
When you want your window covering to give you more control over the amount of light that enters (or leaves) your house, blinds are the way to go. In the modern market place, you can find blinds that range in price from $15 to $1,500 and range in looks from the purely functional to the truly elegant. While the mini-blinds that you can pick up at any department store will probably be easy enough to install that just about anyone can put them up properly, a nice set of wooden blinds or vertical blinds might be better installed by a professional.

Shades
Shades are generally meant more for function than form. They block light, increase privacy, and can even block a draft all without ever getting in the way. They are very easy to install, but are most often seen used in conjunction with another window dressing to boost appearances.

Subtle Solutions
Sure, window coverings are great for blocking light and dressing up a dull room, but there are other benefits, as well. Privacy is often an issue in large cities, and it's no different in San Diego. Window coverings are pretty much the only thing separating the inside of your home from unwelcome eyes; with the right curtains, blinds, or shades, your home will let in light when you want it to, but the private goings on of your household will not be on display to any nosy neighbors!

A visual barrier is not the only practical benefit offered by window coverings. San Diego is known for its desirable weather, but every resident knows that there are plenty of times when central heating and air conditioning are a must. Window coverings designed to block light can also block heat from entering the home on hot, sunny days; at the same time, closed curtains or drapes can also create a barrier of air between you and the chilly night air (the same principle that makes double and triple paned windows more energy efficient). In some cases, the right window coverings can actually reduce both heating and cooling costs!

Finding the Window Coverings
Whether you need appearance, practicality, or both, you'll that there is no shortage of options. However, when shopping for window coverings, San Diego homeowners should be aware that a little research and/or advice can go a long way. Hiring an interior designer to help with this task is, of course, the easiest way to get exactly what you want; if you choose to go it alone, though, it is important to take your time and opt for quality. In general, the more completely a window dressing blocks light, the better your chances are of reaping the practical benefits as well as the aesthetic ones. If you want a good combination of practicality and aesthetic appeal, a combination of two different window coverings is often the best idea. For example, having airy, translucent curtains might be a wonderful accent during the daytime, but if you supplement those curtains with pull-down shades, you'll still be able to completely block prying eyes and cool temperatures at night.

Costs
Due to the wide spectrum of window coverings available, and the large variations in material and installation costs, it is very difficult to say how much the idea you have in mind will end up costing. There are, however, a few things that can make your window coverings more expensive. Specialty drapes or curtains that have to be big enough to cover a large picture window or multiple windows may have to be custom made, which, of course, will drive up the price. Also, anything that requires professional installation will likely be more expensive. Often, homeowners hire an interior decorator to plan not just their window coverings, but the entire scheme of the house. This tactic, though expensive, often leads to results worthy of showing off.
