Comment: Typically water hammer is caused by pressure. You have a pressure regulator valve (PRV) by your meter. What this does is reduce the pressure coming into your home. Usually the pressure in the street coming into your home is over 100 psi. All of your gaskets and seals for faucets, washing machine hoses, dishwasher hoses, refrigerator water hookups… can only handle 55 to 65 psi. If the pressure is higher than that it can blow out the seals and hookups. When a PRV goes bad it will either fail in the completely closed position which means you have no water at all, or in the fully open position which means you are receiving the full pressure into your home. (Our previous office manager had a PRV fail in the open position and it blew out her kitchen faucet, water ran for about 12 hours and caused over $100,000 in damage). I recommend that you have your PRV replaced. This should fix the hammer you hear. Thanks, Donala Water & Sanitation
