Comment: I am purchasing a townhouse built in 1964. The original duct work for the forced air heater is suspected of containing asbestos. The exhaust duct is still in place but appears (to my untrained eye) of being in good condition. A couple of other ducts appear to have been replaced, however the old ducts have been left in the attic. I am concerned that the replacement of the duct work was not performed properly, and that the asbestos insulation on the previous duct work left in the attic is damaged. My biggest concern is that asbestos fibers have been released into the ducting and/or attic do to poor workmanship. My second biggest concern is whether or not the remaining, potentially damaged ducts are a hazard. I would like to see if I could have my in house duct work and air quality tested, and how much it might cost. The sooner the testing the can occur, the better since I am entering Escrow.
