Project: Hire a Handyman
AFS General Contracting Tony Scalia installed my Pergo XP flooring incorrectly. According to Pergo's simple 3 page installation instructions which are easily obtained online, this product should not be used in an area that will have water on the floor for more than 30 minutes, it is not recommended for kitchens or bathrooms. Other professionals have told me the same thing saying that they glued chipboard underneath the laminate will absorb water and swell. Tony told me that the Pergo xp product once locked together was watertight. Pergo's instructions also state that the floor should not be installed over a plank subfloor, but should have a suitable solid underlayment for use under a laminate floor installed first. Tony installed the Pergo XP product directly on top of the 4 inch tongue and grooved planks subfloor of my 1940 house without using any plywood or Luan underlayment. I have had three other professionals tell me that this is an incorrect installation, and that this is the reason that the joined edges of the Pergo are flexing and lifting. Tony also installed the flooring in the wrong direction in part of the job , which resulted in a transition piece in the middle of the walkway. When I questioned Tony, he told me that it was the only way it could have been done. I've had three other professionals tell me that it was assembled in the wrong direction and should have been built towards the door, not starting from the door. I'm extremely disappointed that my $1,600 project is already looking worn and old and curled with laminate chipping, after only 4 years. Anyone reading this review, I suggest you hire an installer with much more experience, and do your homework and become fully familiar with the installation instructions, and watch your installer to make sure they are complying with this. ***Because as a result of Tony's installation, which is in conflict with Pergo's instructions, my Lifetime Product Warranty guaranteed by Pergo IS NOW VOID. I HAVE NO PRODUCT WARRANTY.***

Tony was absolutely the best. He is very professional and has a wonderful work ethic - that is hard to find these days. He did jobs that I couldn't get others to perform - taking out a swing set with concrete and putting a deck around an old Ester Williams pool where the deck had collaped. Other contractors just looked at the deck and didn't want to touch it. He cut down bushes that were more like forest trees. He let me know the status of the work and I always could get a hold of him. I plan to hire him for windows and doors and some electric work.

Tony worked on a variety of projects for me including remodeling a small bathroom and repairing two storage sheds. He did a great job on all of them. I found him to be professional and very fair in what he charged. I plan on hiring him for future work.

Because of weather conditions it took a while to get the job done but Tony kept in contact with me to make sure he would get it done ASAP. He followed thru on his commitment to me when we first spoke.

I own a property in NY while living out of state. There had been quite a bit of damage done to the property and general maintenance was needed to clean out drains. I did not expect such a mess and was a bit panicked knowing I only had 5 days to take care of everything. Home Advisers put me in touch with Tony. His professionalism calmed my fears immediately. I called on a Saturday morning and he called back immediately. He understood the time crunch and assured me everything would be taken care of. He stopped by first thing Monday morning to assess the work required and by Wednesday everything was completed and looked great. The price he charged was much less than I expected. The work area in the entire house was left cleaner than when he started. I can't speak highly enough for Tony. He genuinely cared about my property and me. He has an extremely calming effect in an emergency situation. I just wish he lived in California where I live. The quality and price here are so sub-standard to what I experienced in NY. I can't recommend him enough!
