He assured me he could specify what I asked and he demanded a $500 fee to come look at the site. Then he submitted a really expensive proposal to specify what I needed and told me he probably wouldn't spec what I wanted anyway.

    Response from Company:

The client hired AFM Inspections & Engineering, PLLC to provide a consultation on their interior renovation and expansion of their house, which was already started; demolition had been partially long completed without any completed design or work permits in place. The client had originally hired an architect to perform the design and file with the New York City Department of Buildings. After several years of difficulties with their architect, who is unqualified to prepare a suitable set of drawings for approval, the client was getting nowhere with their project. The client reached out to AFM to provide consultation on the expansion, part of which they wanted a very thin structural slab to coordinate with their intended design of the interior. We told her that this was very unorthodox and would be nearly impossible to design.....and not that we did not want to do it..... or that we were not interested in helping with their project. We also made it clear to the client our fees prior to, and at the inspection. The client appears confused about this and we are not sure why. We never allude or lie about our consultation fees. We do not provide free site consultations, as we take all jobs seriously. In fact, we offered to take over the job as the main design applicant (a typical requirement by NYC DOB) and we provided our fees to the client. The proposal to the client was very reasonable for the work involved, and in accordance with current market fees. The fees may appear to be too high for the client, because they are 'out of touch' with reality, and the real costs. Ms. Prynne K,, claiming to have been a contractor in New York City for 30 years is obviously completely unfamiliar with what it takes complete an alteration from inception to completion. Remember, she hired a cheap, inexperienced designer years ago; the design was not complete, had errors, and the job dragged for years. The client even hired another inexperienced 'detailer' to assist; another failure! On another note, this review in general comes as a surprise to us since the client even emailed after our consultation saying that it was a pleasure meeting us and that they had wished they had gone with us first instead of the architect their originally hired. Their review comes out as unusually vindictive towards us even though the client's issue is their architect and not us. We would have been more than happy to help the client. While it did not work out, we wish the client luck in their search for a competent professional and satisfactory completion of their project on their terms. Good luck with your project, Ms. Prynne K
