Review by Michelle S. in El Cajon, CA
Tony fled after a permit as required by the City. He cut an embankment back to far and caused damage- took all the block and 11,700 of my money and fled. I had to hire another company to correct what he did. His Contractors License was suspended for a bond so the fact that he took the job is nuts. I thought Home Advisors checked these things so I did not. I had to hire a civil engineer as well as a soil engineer and get the permits myself. He showed up to pick up a bucket for his backhoe without permission to enter my property and told the new contractor it was my fault.

Not a good company to hire. Too many negative details to go into here, but I would recommend looking at other contractors besides Tony Chavez and F.A.T. Construction. Not worth the hassle and headache.

Tony, the owner, was somewhat shady; for example he was supposed to do a small fence in the front for which I was to supply the materials, which I did, but he did not complete the job. He hired his brother-in-law to put up fencing that they took down to pour concrete in back (did not do a stellar job on that either). If I had known he was a concrete contractor only, I would have hired a fencing company. Another crew had to come back and repair the gate which still needs more repair. Tony knew I did not live close by, and I would have to meet him all the time, but he often did not show up and would text me 2 hours after the fact. Once I called to meet him but he was in Mexico with his girlfriend. Also, he uses a concrete company (Superior Ready-mix Concrete) and they sent a certified demand letter in regard to his project to the tune of $9 grand! Tony was aware of this in advance, but did not tell me about it. One more thing: I bought all new fencing to be installed and he threw all the old wood down an embankment and then charged me to take it to the dump later, also he charged me $200 a day for his brother-in-law's shoddy workmanship. He also hires shady day-workers. Communication was sorely lacking. He fired 3 different workers in the weeks that he worked with me and was thus shorthanded. One of the guys he fired was the guy who built my steps going down the embankment, which were not cemented in placed but were just placed with decomposed granite between them, not too sturdy. Tony asked me to give him a great review. Would not advise using this company!
Response by FAT Landscaping: Doug thank you for your honest review and we are sorry you had a negative experience with our service. When it comes to our customers, we strive to make sure they are happy and satisfied with our work. If for any reason our customers are not happy with our work while we are at the jobsite, we do not hesitate to fix it but unfortunately in this case, we did not receive any negative feedback from you while we were at your home completing your project. As a matter of fact, we received quite the opposite from yourself thus and even gained a new customer, your neighbor, because of the work we were doing at your home. In our contract, it clearly stated our cost for the fencing (whether is was subcontracted or not) you agreed to the contract and the job was completed. Had we known that you were not satisfied with our work, we would have gladly taken care of it. We did have to charge additionally to dump the old fence because as you know, it was not in the contract. When we go to the dump, we get charged, therefore we need to charge our customers to cover those charges. In regard to the no shows we only met around 5 times and I was always present. If I did contact you for any reason, the majority reason was I was swamped at another project and unavailable to use my phone. I apologize I was not available when you wanted to meet with me, but if I am out of town quite frankly it is not your concern. I had answered your call and tended to your needs. As far as the Certified Letter from our Concrete vendor, all that information was in the contract and stated this information. If you read the contract in its entirely and had any questions, we would have gladly answered them. I do not quite understand what you are referring to as shady workers. I clearly recall firing only one of my men due to his lack of work ethics and unprofessional-ism. Again, none of your concerns about our work was mentioned to us during our time there, otherwise, it would have been taken care of. We did try to contact you personally to take care of this matter once we received this review but unfortunately to this date we have not received a call back. Once again, we sincerely apologize for your bad experience but we hope in the future that you can also communicate with any contractor about your concerns so they can be taken care of right away and not after a few months of job completion. Best regards, Tony C F.A.T. Construction

Tony and his company did a first rate job in repairing a brick wall damaged by a car hitting it. He was on time for the appointment, was prompt for the actual repair, and finished it to my satisfaction.

I hired F.A.T. Construction to do retaining wall and paver project. I was so pleased with the finished product, that I had them also install turf grass and modify an existing paver courtyard. Tony and his crew have been very professional and I will definitely use them again!

I hired F.A.T Construction to do my front yard project. It included some prep, grading, concrete, and landscaping. The crew was great, they arrived on time and worked a solid day. Tony was real easy to work with and we had chosen them over a lower priced competitor because he understood our vision and made some really great suggestions. I'd recommend them to anyone.
