Review by Jane H. in Colorado Springs, CO
Project: Paint Cabinets
Happy Painting was hired to paint my kitchen cabinets. Josh came on a Monday morning, took off all the cabinet doors, and told me the entire job would be finished by that Friday - 5 days. It is a small kitchen. For the next month, my kitchen was torn up with most of the doors still gone. Josh rarely showed up less than two hours late every time he came, with no call to warn me, no explanation or apology. One day I waited an entire day for him to show up as promised, and he never did, even though I called and left a message wondering where he was. He did not return my call, and two days later, he called out of the blue saying he was on his way, as I was walking out the door. Again, no apology, just an excuse why it was not his fault that he did not show up or call. When he finally put some of the doors back on, I was stunned at how bad they looked. The paint was uneven on some doors and looked like it had barely covered on others. It was a sloppy job, and when I told him how disappointed I was, he AGREED that they did not look very good, but it was not his fault. It was the weather, he said, and the poor quality of the doors, and how hard they were to work on. He offered to take them all off and re-do them, and they would be much nicer, which begs the obvious question - why werent they done better in the first place, if he was able to do them better? He had no answer for that. In the end, it took over a month to have them completed, and on the day he told me they were done, and he left, I discovered immediately that the base cabinet lazy susan (which he had completely disassembled and then reassembled) was inoperable. The door hit the base cabinet frame so that it would not open at all. There is simply no way he did not know that when he left. It took Josh a week and a half to come back to try to fix it, again making excuses why it was not his fault, and in the end, the best he could do was to make it operable but now it does not close all the way, so it looks bad. I could forgive a lot if the finished product was half as good as he originally claimed it would be, but it does not look professional at all, it is just sloppy and inconsistent and varies from door to door. I could have done a much better job myself. After a month and a half of promises to finish that were broken over and over, zero communication about the many times he was very, very late (or anything else), endless excuses about why the whole fiasco was my fault, the weathers fault, other clients demanding his time and attention - everything but his own failure to just get the job done - I was thoroughly disgusted with this business and would never, under any circumstances, recommend him. Incredibly poor work ethic, quality standards, and absolutely no responsibility taken for anything. I spent more hours just waiting for him to show up than he ever spent doing the actual work. And now, not even a month after the work was done, the paint is already chipping off, and the house is vacant! Josh, if you are reading this: You boast on your website that you donate to Woodmen Valley Chapel and GEM. If you are going to use those connections, and what they imply, as a marketing tool, then your work ethic and quality standards FOR YOURSELF should be completely impeccable and above reproach, and your work should always be your very best, not just whatever it takes to get by. You were unreliable, dishonest with me, inconsiderate of my time, and you did, by your own admission, a poor job. All I want to say to you is this: if the work you did for us was the best you could do, then you are in the wrong business. And if it was not your best, then shame on you.
