Review by Beth C. in Greenwood, DE
BEWARE: I hired David Carr for 3 separate jobs. My biggest regret is not seeing first through; I would have never hired him again! DECK -The steps had to be re-done. They were not built to code. First State Inspections denied it several times until step height, railing spacing were correct. -He piled the railings in dirt and they were scratched and stained. He reinstalled damaged. NEVER REPLACED. Took a year for him to finish the steps and rails, delayed my permit to move in. -He put the old vinyl posts back up and screwed in new locations. He filled the old holes with putty. It took complaints to get it fixed. -A board on the back step was not screwed down when rebuilt. Not easy to notice with prior screw holes. The board came loose and someone fell going up the steps. PORCH -Boards were to be wrapped in vinyl. Some were not. He nailed up a tape-like strip to appear wrapped. I complained to the BBB. He fixed one section and said he would be back to fix the other two. NEVER FINISHED. -Hand railings on the porch were not installed correctly. Posts were not connected to the concrete except for the 4 corners. Someone fell (AGAIN!) holding on to the railing. The post moved, the railings and stakes fell out. I felt his work was a lawsuit waiting to happen. The railing fell apart in the wind. I PAID TO GET IT FIXED. -Trim on the railing was not cut correctly and was not flush to the post like he did on the deck. NEVER REPLACED. -He used 4 boards at the bottom of the roof frame and put up 6 caps for the posts. It sticks out and looks stupid. Also they keep falling down the posts as they were not attached. Many people remark about the trim and the caps hanging over. I tell them who did the job. NEVER REPAIRED. -Concrete deck on the porch has several cracks, up to 1/5 wide. Its cracked on the deck by the posts. GARAGE -I had storage above and drop-down steps which came 2 off the floor. He built a 3x5 platform, 2 high, for me to lug out when I needed access. He hid it from the inspectors. I showed them and they made him replace it with one that lands on the floor. -He installed garage windows that were dropped and had broken corners he glued on. It was unacceptable; he argued with me because one of the windows on my new house was damaged. He installed new windows. -The paint on the door frame washed off in 2-3 months. After complaining, he repainted it. -Two years after the garage was built, we had snow. Water was leaking in the garage. I contacted David and he said there was NO WARRANTY. I had to pay someone to fix 2 sections; no flashing was installed. -My boyfriend noticed the whole back wall moved in the wind. It was not connected to any trusses or structure besides the floor, roof, and corners. WE FIXED IT. -Several long pieces of metal facing at the roof line fell off in the wind. It was not nailed down enough. WE FIXED IT. When Dave mostly had repairs left to do, he kept pleading with me to pay him the balance. He said his family was having difficulty and he really needed the money. He said he would finish the work and repairs. I was harassed to gave him the money and I gave in (what a big mistake). Most repairs were never done. I filed many complaints with the BBB, Attorney General s office, and the Department of Justice, Consumer Protection Unit. They wrote David to enforce the provisions of the Delaware Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Trade Practices Act. They wrote him a second time, stating he had 10 days to respond. Mr. Carr finally responded and said he will work to resolve this matter, however please note in the job proposal, the last payment was made upon completion. (WHAT A LIE!) He continued to write If Miss Mitchell felt the job was not complete, the last payment should not have been made. WOW! After many complaints, he did a few repairs; most NOT done. It was not built to code and couldn t even withstand wind.

Project: Build a Garage
This company is the best. Brenda and David are on top of the job from start to finish. We hired Homestead to build a garage and they are now doing two decks and a new roof on the home. Prices are in line, the quality of work is top notch and the people are the best. Win!, Win!, Win!

Project: Build a Garage
I would not recommend Homestead General Contracting to anyone I know. I found this contractor on Home Advisor; and I expected great things from the information I was provided. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed with this contractor and the service they provided. The owner (Dave) rarely worked a full day and never worked a full week on our pole garage. He failed to communicate with us on a regular basis as to when he planned to come to work and what was going on with our project. There were multiple weeks when he only showed up one day during that week to work on our garage. Wood and metal were left lying in our yard for weeks. He actually had the audacity to show up one Tuesday morning to get his trailer (that he had left overnight in our yard) and proceed to tell me he was leaving to go to an emergency job. He claimed he was coming back that afternoon to work on our garage and didn’t return until the following Thursday, nearly 10 days later. That was my final straw; I made several complaints to the co-owner (Dave’s wife) and saw little improvement in his work performance. He also didn’t listen to our requests about our building and was determined to do things his way. My husband requested that our side door be placed at the front of our garage and Dave insisted on putting it at the back. My husband wanted our side windows spaced further apart and Dave placed them close together where he decided they should go. I was greatly frustrated with the lack of customer service provided by this contractor. When our building was 80% complete Dave discovered that he didn’t have enough metal to finish the building. Had he laid out his metal before he started putting it up, as he was instructed to do by the metal provider, he would have discovered the shortage early enough to get the additional metal in without causing further delays. Instead we were delayed another week and a half waiting for the order of metal to come in. I can’t say enough how frustrated and disappointed I was throughout this whole contracting experience. I have never had a contractor who proved to be as unprofessional and unreliable as this one! I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER under any circumstances use Homestead General Contracting to do any work for me in the future. They have lost me as a customer, and I had originally planned to consider them for other jobs; and sadly they have lost my friends and family who watched us go through this disappointing experience. Our job was started at the end of September and was supposed to take up to 1 month to finish but OVER ONE YEAR LATER in December 2016 he still has a small fix to do before we can get our final inspection; so we are hiring someone else to finish our garage. Again this was the WORST contracting experience of my life.
