Project: Seed a Lawn
Lawn replacement (6000 sf): very dissatisfactory job, final lawn has many bare spots, messy workmanship, both for the old lawn removal and when the new was mowed, lack of responsiveness to my phone calls (only text messages) and to the request for a problem resolution that is satisfactory to me. Would not hire nor suggest. This is what is behind to the review: I had requested replacement by hydroseeding of front and backyard lawn (sf. 6000). The replacement was done not by hydroseeding, as was indicated in the estimate, but by spreading seeds on top of a new layer of loam. The grass grew but there were numerous patches without any growth, making the new lawn looking as bad as the previous one (I have pictures for this). I had noticed lack of seeds in some areas after the seeding was done, I indicated it to Gene as soon as the grass started to grow, and told him that it did not look like hydroseeding. He told me that his hydroseeding was different and to wait 4 weeks before making any judgment. Four weeks after, the results are a very poorly looking lawn with multiple bare spots. When they mowed the new lawn (had to call them 3 weeks after seeding and tell them it was more than 6" high, nobody ever checked how things were going) clippings of the cut grass were everywhere, including sticking on the wall of my house, driveway, walkway (have picture for it). I asked him to fix the many issues that had not worked out and he said that the bare spots would get fixed by the fertilization that would be done by Emerald Green. When I indicated that, considering the problems, it was him who had to take care of fixing it, he told me that he would not deal with Emerald Green, I had to do it and pay them directly as he wanted to avoid not being paid for the fertilization, which had happened to him before. This after I had paid him in full, even before the entire job that had been agreed was done. I found the tone insulting, said I wanted nothing to do with him anymore and was going to write a review on Home advisor. At that point he changed tone and indicated he would adjust the problems but for me it was too late. When I had another company (can provide the name) coming to see how to fix the problems, they confirmed that the job was not done by hydroseeding, that the mixing of different type of seeds was very uneven on the ground, that it is too late in the season to do overseeding of the bare spots and I would need to do it in the fall. Fixing of other issues related to how the job was done (long to describe here) requires removal of an area of the front lawn and new seeding. Needless to say, the cost they indicate is significant, and this to get something I already paid for. At that point I texted Gene and ask if he was willing to refund some of my cost, that I would sign a non disparagement clause and would avoid posting any review as a settlement. It seemed to me a reasonable solution for both sides. I did not hear back from him. So here I am. All ema

Renovating my ranch house, had a drainage issue in the backyard since forever, which caused a marsh to appear and linger for several days when rain of any significance occurred. Also, I was looking to add a patio to the back door entrance, which I figured would be problematic given how swampy it got. After researching possible options, and briefly considering doing it myself, I decided to hire a pro. After reviewing a couple candidates, I came across Gene from Maple & Clover Landscaping. Right off the bat I was able to clearly and easily communicate with him, regarding my needs, and he knew exactly what needed to be done. While it took him a little longer than he originally stated (3 weeks, as opposed to 1 week), I did not hold this against him as this was caused mostly by the weather not being on our side. Here are the tasks he completed: 1. Dug out a 150ft long, 10ft wide strip around the back and side of the house (the man is an artist with a back hoe, I have no idea how he didn't destroy my fence or the house in such a small area). 2. Filled it with roughly 100 tons of stone. 3. Laid down landscaping fabric, and ran an irrigation piping system around to channel the water to a sewer drain on one end, and out to the street on the other. Provided input feeds into the system for the gutters at the relevant corners. 4. Covered the stone & pipes with fresh loam, then covered it in freshly grown sod. 5. Helped me decide on the stone, and installed a brand new patio as well. Currently watering the heck out of it, everything looks great! Even after a torrential downpour, the area that would stay swampy for 3 to 4 days, is back to fairly solid footing in about 12 hours - fantastic! There were a couple of minor issues that I noticed along the way, but Gene was very responsive, and quick to resolve any problems until I was satisfied. Given how long I was looking for a contractor to help me with this problem, I consider myself lucky to have found Maple & Clover Landscaping. I would highly recommend him, and will be calling on him again for front yard work later on.

Outstanding service. We've never hired a fall clean up before. Maple and Clover were the fastest to respond with a quote, which was very reasonable. This was the main reason we hired Gene. Cleaning the yard was an all day event, but it was spotless when they were finished. I will be hiring them for my future clean-ups and yard work. Thank you so much! Knowing that weather plays such a role in setting up a day and time, estimated dates and times are subject to change. You may need to follow up when this happens.

Gene (the owner) was very responsive, gave me a reasonable price, and scheduled the work quickly and easily. I hired him for a fall yard cleanup, and he did a very nice, meticulous job - better than I've had done by more expensive landscapers. Will definitely hire again.

Review by Dian X. in Marlborough, MA
"I will never hire this company again, which provides low quality of work and few customer service. Project (Total cost $26650) was proposed to be finished in one week but took more than three months. There is no customer service, zero follow up after the project was finished. The quality of work is very poor. Stone wall installation did not follow standard and has safety concerns. The grading was done poorly and the ground was wavy. Drainage installation is completely unprofessional. We have open pipe end in the front yard and lately uncovered part of the drainage were put together by pieces of broken pipes. By the end of July there is no grass growing but all weeds and the front yard was a disaster."
Response by Maple & Clover Landscape, LLC: Customer, Happy with the entire job and fully paid until it came to them watering., They never watered the grass or shrubs. Also they sprayed Herbicides on the new Hydroseed which destroyed the germination process pf grass seed. Herbicides were sprayed in mulch beds which help killed the shrubs as well. Will never do business with this customer ever again.

I had an excellent experience with Maple & Clover Landscape. My yard was basically useless due to the layout. They came up with some great ideas and leveled a bunch of unused land and now it's on it's way to being a great place for my family to enjoy. I would recommend them for any landscape ideas and/or service you need.
