How We Got Started

I chose to work in this industry because I started as a customer with waterproofing issues. I liked Mr Basements ethics, products and services provided for my home. I was a Sales Agent for Home Depot at the time. I applied for a sales position at Mr. Basement. The training Mr Basement provided was outstanding. It made me extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of waterproofing, crawlspaces, mold cleaning and foundation repair..

We started in this industry in 1987.

We describe our business as Family owned and operated

Over $5000 invested in the waterproofing of my basement and now the water intrusion is worse. I only signed on the contract because they offered a warranty to state that they would guarantee no more water. They only offered to sell me more services...At a ridiculous rate. The pump they installed gets overwhelmed easily, the trenches they installed are already coming loose AND they damaged the flooring in my garage and had no attention to detail.

I recently purchased a house at the auction that sat vacant for a couple years. Due to there being no power the sump pump system was not working, also previous owners were not maintaining the roof/gutter system and the water was draining straight down in front of the house, soaking up the soil which then pushed on the foundation wall of the house, causing a horizontal crack in the basement wall (cinder block). Since sump pump was not working the walls were soaked and full of water at various times which added to their fragility. I had 3 main waterproofing companies come out to give me their opinion on what was going on and what needs to be done. The biggest one with a high number of sales, covering the entire region according to their very pushy salesperson (who also happened to be the VP of the company - do they always send their VPs to do estimates?) wanted 27k for the project (which would involve installing drain system from inside the house since I did not want any digging outside and the size of the crack was not big enough to warrant that yet). With a discount that was only good if I sign right then and there (ugh) they would be able to do it for 24k. I said I will research other options and they said fine, although later this company called me numerous times saying someone higher up saw that they can possibly give me a good deal and asking to meet again, so be prepared - do not ever sign on the first time with these guys, you will get a better deal later. After wasting my time on second estimate their lowest was 21k and thats when I said my final goodbye because by then I had an estimate from Mr. Basement. Mr. Basement's VP Mark came by with his apprentice and immediately assessed the situation with trained eye, knew the age of the house and its construction, bit of history and recalled similar projects they have done in the past, which made me trust his expertise. His proposed plan of action was the same as the first company's (reinforce wall with carbon-fiber beams, seal cracks, install new sump pump with battery back up - no digging new drain system since drain system was already there, the sump pump was just not working). Total cost a little over 10k. No discounts then or later, no back and forth, though he did throw in old insulation removal and mold remediation because it had to be done before they start working in the basement. Of course it was hard to resist. I did call one other leading company whose rep wanted 36k for the project (where do they come up with those numbers? There is no value in this for me at all) Mind you, this was for the same project - reinforcing walls with military-material beams and installing sump pump, the only difference they also wanted to install some fan to have air circulate in the basement. When I asked for the cheapest price and no frills they dropped the fan and his final price was 28k. Apparently the fan (or air circulation system which is essentially a fan as they told me under pressure) is worth $8000. I was so upset with these blatant prices and ripoff attempts that I told them their competitors were way below their prices and they just priced themselves out of competition. That was what sealed the deal with Mr. Basement, they scheduled installation for the next week and were done in two days. I also arranged financing through them and it was low stress process overall which is important when you are dealing with a lot of repairs (my house also needed new HVAC and water heating systems, new plumbing along with numerous smaller renovations like painting).
