Exterior house painting Awful experience! It started out great. Estimator was knowledgeable and seem to do a very thorough job. The estimate came in on the high side but the company seemed very professional and worth the premium. Things went bad very quickly. There was a good amount of wood rot. The original estimate for carpentry was $2900. Just as they finished the contracted carpentry I received a call with an additional $3000 of work. This seemed strange given the time the estimator took to do the estimate. Also, much of the additional work was at ground level, not up high where it could have been missed. I called the carpentry manager to discuss. Not a good customer service person at all. He started by saying the estimators were not good at what they did. They are paint estimators and don't know carpentry. He added that I was unreasonable to expect the estimators to understand both paint and carpentry. Very strange! Thinking maybe I caught him on a bad day, I called the owner. To his credit he called right back. I explained that I was not happy that the company was looking for 100% increase from the original carpentry work. I discussed my convo with his carpentry manager. He stated he had talk to his managers in the past about talking bad about other folks in the company. I must assume this has happened before. Unfortunately, he didn't acknowledge that there was a problem. He sent his estimator back. Nothing came of that exercise. The job was $3000 over and the painting hadn't even begun! We decided to go without the additional work and complete the job. There was one more problem. While doing the carpentry on the exterior window frame, there was damage to the interior frame. They refused responsibility. Blaming faulty installation of curtain rods. These rods have been in place for 15 years. Crazy. A few days later I received a call that the company was not going to finish the job. This company is not good at customer service and the staff talks a lot but doesnât listen. They have a response ready before completely hearing the issue. This tells me they hear lots of complaints and are very aggressive when they respond. This was true up and down the organization. From office staff, to estimators, right up to the owner. BTW - We found another reputable painting company to finish the paint part of the job for $2400 less than the paint price from Stewart. Same paint, same work. Stay away from this company
Response from Company:
Thank you, Rick, for taking the time to point out your accounting of the events that took place. You pointed out that the estimator was knowledgable and through, but that it was on the high side (budget), and you also pointed out that our company was very professional and worth the premium (budget). It is at this point that I dispute the accounting of what transpired. Additional areas of rot were found, as often happens when you begin to sand and/or scrape old paint off to repaint. We provided a the pricing, as requested, to repair those areas, as we would highly recommend for a quality service. Rick was not pleased with the pricing and became belligerent with our crew, requesting to speak to the Carpentry Supervisor, and then myself. I explained to Rick that the areas that were found were all second level areas excluding a small section behind a bush, and that the amount to repair those areas was reflective in the estimate for the repairs and the amount of work required. Rick was still not satisfied and then chose to email the sales person to explain how I did not listen to him and I spoke over him. It was at this point that I agreed with my team that we were not a good fit with this customer, and that we would not be moving forward with the remaining part of his project. I am very happy that Rick was able to find a company that completed the project for $2400.00 less than he was originally contracted with my company, and that he is satisfied with the work. I am also happy that there will be additional money available to repair the wood rot items that we found that remain on the home. I wish Rick and his girlfriend nothing but the best of luck in the future.
