Top Deck did a quality job in the short time frame I gave them. Bart was very responsive and I will no problem calling him for future work.

You must insist on a written proposal. Requested several times via email - never received. Bart came out to look our pool deck over and made us feel that he could handle repairs with no problem by the date we needed (our son and his fiance were coming home for an engagement party on June 24) He came out on Father's Day finished half the job and said he would finish on time - no worries. When we contacted him the Monday before the party to inquire when he would be out to finish the other half, he got very defensive and claimed that he felt from the very beginning that it was a disaster. He then said that he would refund part of the money given to him and that we should find someone else to finish. We pleaded with him to finish since we had little ones coming to the party. He did come back a couple of more times and said he would need an additional $600 stating the one end of the pool deck was not in the original quote. We had somewhere to be the Friday night before the party so we paid him trusting that he would finish completely. The last piece of the deck he completed left safety concerns. When we asked him about addressing these issues, he said he would come by (two different times) and it never happened. We sent a text to him on Labor Day asking if he would be coming as promised and received no answer. We did give him one more chance just this week to no avail. We will have to try to hire someone to fix those areas that he technically should have completed.

    Response from Company:

I went out and looked at this job, the lead said repair. When I got there I asked Bill "we are tearing this down and starting over correct?" Bill said no which I could not believe what I was looking at. They had a new pool put into an existing deck, but it was 5 feet shorter and about 2 feet narrower also it was about 10 inches below the deck. Bill said he wanted the deck just filled in to fit the new pool. I asked him why he didn't get a pool the same size and have the ground built up under it to raise it up to fit the deck, he said that was too much money. I then told him I had some ideas on filling in the gaps but I really thought the back section was very unsafe and should be removed. He then stated that it was his wife's favorite part of the deck for sunning, also I asked about the part of the deck that Bill and his friend had already started on (having no idea why they pulled up wood on the only good part of the deck ) he said he started but felt it was over his head and said he would reinstall that section of flooring that he pulled up. I left and told him I would give them a quote, I did and they hired me stating it needed to be done by 6/24. I told them if the weather is good it will be no problem. On Fathers day I started 1 week before their due date. On Monday 6/19 it rained, that night I get a text from Bills wife (who I never have talked to) requesting that I finish by Wednesday as they had family coming on that afternoon. I stated that could not be done as I was doing this job at night because I had promised to be done before their party and I had other jobs going on. I offered to let them find someone else and refund the money minus the lumber I had already bought, but instead they told me to finish the job. On Wednesday When I got there Bill met me with a Gatorade and asked me how much more to replace the flooring he had already removed. I told him $600.00. He said to go ahead adding more work but still in the same time frame. At that point I was working till dark then going to Menards for a load of lumber not getting home till after 10. I worked the next 2 nights till dark to finish. On Thursday night I finished up all the work that we had originally agreed on at first. Then on Friday I finish up the section that Bill had already removed. That evening they were going out and told me since I was almost done they paid me and left. I finished up around dark and went home. On July 6th I text Char and asked if they wanted to sell their extra pool cleaner that they got with there new pool and she said yes. I went down to their house to pick it up and while I was there Bill asked if I could give him some advice/ideas about tightening up the gaps between the bottom of the deck and the top of the pool (remember the pool is about 10 inches below the deck) I told him yes but it would be awhile as I was very busy. Just before Labor Day she text me and told me her deck was unsafe and I needed to come and finish my job (but

I hired Top Deck to tear down and replace a deck. We own a home in Illinois but mostly reside in Arkansas so I needed someone to handle everything for me. Top Deck got good reviews so I hired him. It started out fine. Bart got the village permit that was needed and started work. My son does live in the house so he sent me pictures to I could see what was happening. The work was mostly fine. There was one issue with the railing. The spacing on the horizontal board and vertical board was not even so there was a larger space at the end. Bart stuck a wedge in it. My son sent a picture and I questioned Bart so he fixed that. I guess I don't know if he would have fixed it anyway or left it like that. Then he built the stairs. I realize that my old deck was out of code for the village. After he built the stairs, my son sent me a picture. We have a sidewalk in the back yard that led to the stairs of the old deck. Now the side walk leads to the side of the stairs and you have to walk into the grass to get to the stairs. I know the old stairs were out of code. I just wish Bart would have contacted me about where the stairs would end up. We could have then did some landscaping to accommodate this. Now you have to step into the grass to get upstairs. We will still have to do something but we have to work around the stairs. Bart sent a picture when he was finished and the stairs had one railing. He said the village didn't require two railings but if I want one he will put one there. Well, of course, I want another railing. So when he's finished he texted me to send the amount due and he said he wouldn't charge me for the second railing. Why would I get charged extra? Stairs usually have two railings and our old deck had two railings. I guess he figured since the sidewalk ran into the stairs we could just jump up on the stairs. He texted me on a Monday to send the money. I put a check in the mail on Tuesday. On Thursday he texted me that he hadn't received the check yet. I said I put it in the mail Tuesday. He said he would look for it the next day and he's not used to waiting six days for payment. I replied the check is in the mail, it takes a little longer because I am out of town and it was only three days. He said the village approved it on Friday and I replied he texted me on Monday. As I said the work is mostly fine, not perfect. But the customer service is very much lacking. I am glad my son was there to send me pictures. Would not hire again.

    Response from Company:

This person contacted me in June to build a deck on her home she said she wanted someone who could handle the job from start to finish she said that after reading my reviews she said I was the best person as she didn't live at the home she lives in Arkansas. So I went out and gave her a quote, in July she hired me I told I would get the permit started she overnighted me a survey and a deposit check I got the permit about 2 weeks later started on August 4. the next day after I had framed it and left my phone starts blowing up with pictures of the deck with complaints about the quality of the wood as she didn't like the small splits in the treated wood (as all treated wood has) I went to the lumber yard as took pictures of the wood there to show her all treated wood has cracks. I went back the next and finished up all the joist hangers and stair stringers preparing for my framing inspection that night my phone started blowing up once again this time about the temporary bracing that I use on the stringers and the length of the of the stairs. I called her and explained that this is exactly to the blue print that I had sent her that she approved she stated to me "I know my old deck was out of code but I didn't relies the stairs would be longer" . My framing inspection passed with no concerns from the city inspector. the next day I went out and put down the floor and the rails once again my phone starts blowing up with text and pictures about the railing on the stairs only on one side once again I told this was on the blue print and was exactly to it and it was to code . She also complained about a shim I had used on one corner of the rail cap. I had my final inspection planned already for early the next morning it was Friday and didn't want to wait till Monday around noon the building inspector called me and stated "one of the best built decks he has looked at it years that I should be proud of it and to come back in his town and work anytime "so I told him about all the issues with this homeowner. The next day after it passed inspection I went out free of charge and put on the other side railing on the stairs. I knew she knew it passed inspection on Friday morning her son lived in the home and had been taking all the inspection sticker off and sending to his mom in Arkansas. I text her pictures on Saturday of the railing I went out and install for her and asked if she could send final payment no response from her so I waited till Tuesday still nothing so I text her again she responded Ill get it this week I assumed she would over night it as she did the first payment it took till Saturday the next week to get it I was afraid she wasn't going to pay me
