For 50 years, since 1966 to be exact, Hobbs Door Service has provided installation and repair service for overhead garage doors and electric garage door openers to the Tidewater (Hampton Roads) market. It is our goal to provide prompt and efficient service. We will be glad to provide an estimate of costs associated with a replacement or repair on the phone. We use no gimmicks in our pricing.

I called early in the morning and the work was completed that afternoon. The service was excellent and the technician, Chris, was friendly and professional. Unlike other door companies I have had over the years, they did not try to up sell me on service or parts that I did not need. I thought the price was very fair and I would definitely hire them again. Overall, an excellent experience.

They cut some of the weather stripping too short which left gaps under the garage door. They kind of rushed to get done. They came late in the evening, and it was hard to see because there was no power to it. <br /> <br /> They were eager to sell me the door.

"Thank you for the assessment. Reviews help us to make improvements and changes where needed, and are a valuable insight. I am wondering though when you noticed shortened bottom seal under the door, considering it is more than a decade old. We do not have any record of post-installation service or warranty requests and can't provide a service where we are unaware that there is a problem. The bottom rubber strip, installed at the factory, is not cut by installers. It shrinks over time, and is subject to wear-and-tear since the the door rests on it when closed. Technicians address bottom seal as evidenced by references in other reviews, see 3/10/16 and 1/1/16. For the listed address, we show a November 20, 2003 installation date, not 6/15/2000 as you listed. Is it possible that you are referencing another door on the property? If not, and the date is just listed incorrectly, notes indicate the installer had to go back to the site after the initial scheduled install date because the builder did not have the site adequately prepared. That made it, of necessity, a project started late in the day, at a time of year with shorter daylight hours. Our techs don't stop working at 5PM if their work isn't completed, and they try very hard not to hold work over to the next day, so they carry work lights on the trucks that can be powered from a generator or inverter. When you selected an 18x8 2214 CHI door, you selected one of the best products available from any garage door manufacturer at the time. It has a high r-value, and extra reinforcement because of the oversized sections. It is heavy duty and durable, as evidenced by the lack of repair requests since the time it was installed. It is an excellent product that has already provided years of reliable service and will continue to do so. If you are in Virginia Beach or Chesapeake sometime, and you call in to request it, I can have the shop cut you a piece of the bottom rubber strip to replace the original shrunken one, and have it available for pickup. The field techs do not carry 18 ft materials on their trucks, so it would have to be a custom cut."

Amazing! I can't believe I could contact a company at 11:00 one night and have them here 12 hours later. I wasn't expecting to be able to get the services done, but I got lucky with Hobbs. The workers seem professional and skilled and the price is outstanding.

Job went perfectly. I needed routine maintenance on my garage door so I called and spoke with Janice on Tuesday. She gave me extensive information on what the technician would do as far as routine maintenance and what the cost would be. I called back on Wednesday to schedule after reaching a call center at another Angie's List provider and not receiving a call back from a third provider. Appointment was for 10:00 this morning and Janice knew I needed to be gone by 11:30 so she called before 9:00 to say the technician would arrive shortly. He arrived at 9:15 and was done in less than an hour. Technician was polite, personable and thorough. He addressed all my concerns. I will definitely use Hobbs next time and recommend to my neighbors. <br />

It was a terrific experience considering the circumstances. The technician was punctual, personable,and professional. He went above and beyond to ensure my garage door was working efficiently. He had to replace the springs and gave me an honest assessment of necessary repairs. He also recommended preventive maintenance that I could conduct on my own. Wow! They were amazing from start to finish! I found "Hobbs Door Service" through Angie's list and chose them specifically because of the reviews. In many of the reviews I read, the writers raved about Janice and how she helped diagnose the problem on the phone. When I called, I asked the lady answering the phone, "Are you Janice by chance?" She said, "Yes" with a smile in her voice. I let her know about the Angie's List reviews and that is why I was asking. <br /> I went on to tell her the "symptoms" of our garage door not closing and she patiently yet quickly walked me through diagnosing the problem. It was evident, one of our springs had broken. It was the day before Christmas Eve and we needed someone to come over the same day and even within two hours if possible. She said she would call me back in a few minutes but she thought that was doable. In less than 5 minutes, she told me their technician "Chris" was on the way. <br /> Chris called a few minutes later to let us know of his ETA and he was right on time. He was so professional and even took time to teach us some maintenance tips that would save us money in the future. He was excellent. <br /> As far as the price, we were extremely pleased. Janice, walked us through what she thought it would cost and gave us a range of up to $250 but thought it may be less. We were especially pleased that she was right that it would be less than that and in fact was only $209 to replace two springs and the labor. Chris also pointed out that the mechanism that opens the garage door was literally in danger of falling off the ceiling. Chris took time to repair that, grease the rollers and got the door operating smoothly and more quietly. <br /> It was all around an excellent experience. I felt like we were valued as customers and that they did not try to take advantage of us financially. I would definitely recommend them to anyone I know and use them for any and all door issues we have moving forward! <br /> "Bravo!" Janice and Chris! Excellent service from the initial call to the installation. The owner of the company came out to verify the measurements and provide color samples and accessories during the site visit. After that they were able to fit me into their install schedule with no delay. The install technician was very polite and respectful of our home. He did a great job! Definitely highly recommend them! <br />

<p>Returned home from work and found the garage door wouldn't open. Initial investigation showed the torque spring had broke and the door was too heavy for the opener to lift. I contacted Hobbs Door Service and spoke with Janice. We discussed the problem and she knew right away the problem and what needed to be done. We set up an appointment for the next day. The repair technician, Chris, contacted me and told me he was on his way, arriving a short time later. The work was completed in an hour and tested for proper operation. </p> <p>I'm very happy with Hobbs response and the quality of work. I'm one of a few in my neighborhood who use their garage for our vehicles so I'm happy to be parking inside with minimal amount of delay. </p> <p>I chose this company because it was locally owned and I wasn't disappointed.</p> <br />

Same day service. I emailed Janice in the morning, and the work was completed in the afternoon. I had her contact my husband since he was working from home. He said the tech arrived promptly. Reinforced the attachement to the garage door for the the attachement for the door opener. He completed the job within 30 minutes. He was very professional. Knew what he was doing. The cost was very responsible. The customer service we have received was awesome. They are very knowledgeable and to the point. There where no hidden costs. I would use them again - if and when we will have problems with our garage door again. <br />

I was so surprised when Ms. Hobbs answered her business phone after 4 pm. on a Saturday afternoon. She was so pleasant and professional as I explained what had happened to one of our garage doors....politely responding to my questions about what part/parts might need to be replaced. Her technician, Chris, arrived right on time on Monday morning. What a nice young man! He went right to work replacing 2 bad springs, 5 pulleys, a lift cable, etc. Great experience. We will use them again!

Janice Hobbs exemplified true leadership as the owner/operator of the business by acting on my urgent request to repair the garage door operator before the long Labor Day weekend of 29 Aug'14. I called her @ 10am on 29 August & the door opener was fixed before 7pm same day. The cost was fair & reasonable and technician Chris' work quality was superb. <br />

I called around to quite a few garage door contractors and got some quick quote. One came out to estimate and told me he couldn't quote me because my ceiling was too low. (this was one of the bigger and closer to the top of the list contractors) The next day I called Hobbs and talked to a lady (office manager) there. She knew more about garage doors than probably most of the installers. She had me go measure the height (I volunteered) of the ceiling and she told me it would be no problem. She then explained the types of door openers they had for me. I told her I wanted it to work with my integrated door opener in my older model car. She recommended the correct model for that. (and it was the lower priced one - the right product - not the most expensive! (GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE PEOPLE!) I scheduled the appointment for the next day between 8:00 - 12:00. <br /> Right before 12:00 the office manager called and said the service technician assigned to me was stuck on another job, however they were sending someone else in about an hour. He was there in about 45 minutes. He was a nice young man with a pleasant personality who really knew his stuff. He surveyed the situation, critique the original construction, made recommendations, and did the work expertly. <br /> He explained everything and how it worked and the different upgrades that my new opener would have over my previous opener. He left with a smile and so did I. <br /> I will ALWAYS use this company for my garage door needs. YOU SHOULD TOO! <br />

"Thanks for your kind words. You mentioned something that it really important to us - making sure that the product installed is one that will work the way you want and expect it to. Presently, garage door openers are undergoing a sort of "technology revolution." Because there are so many wireless devices these days, there is a slightly increased chance of interference with the correct operation of the garage door opener. As a result, the manufacturers of several brands are utilizing more complicated remote control systems that simply will not work with most older model HomeLink and Car2U systems. To find out, after paying several hundred dollars for a new system, that it will not work with the older on-board car system, or to make it work with the car would cost even more money, would make me upset....and I would feel as if I were conned into a larger sale. (the "older" technology is still great stuff - rolling code with a billion-to-one chance of someone having the same code) As a result, operator compatibility is something I try very hard to remember to bring up to customers on the phone. We are a small, family owned company and we try to distinguish ourselves by educating consumers about what is available and providing the best possible service that we can."
