Comment: In 2012, I bought my house which was built in 1979. I noticed last year and again this year that woodpeckers have attacked the cedar shingles on all three sides. (The back of the house and the garage have vinyl siding.) Entomologists I have talked to seem to think that it is insects under the shingles that are luring the woodpeckers. I have used Ortho’s Home Defender spraying up under the shingles and wasp like insects have come out. The J&L Hardware (Fairfax) salesman seems to think that shingles have gone soft with age facilitating the woodpeckers drilling efforts. I am retired and am on limited income and thus would like to keep costs down. First off, I would like to have the house sprayed with an insecticide that will permanently keep the insects away. Secondly, if possible to repair or replace the damaged shingles and then use a woodpecker chemical deterrent on the shingles to keep them from coming back. If all the shingles have to be replaced, then I would look into t
