BUSINESS OVERVIEW

Do not underestimate the need for a healthy indoor environment. We spend, on average, 90% of our time indoors. Some of us spend virtually all our time indoors. Unfortunately the design and operation of modern homes, schools and offices, and the materials with which we fill them can be hazardous to our health. There has been an increase in asthma between 1980 and 1994 of 81% for females, 42% for males (American Lung Association). Molds have been identified as a source of many health problems such as infections, asthma, allergies and sinusitis (EPA). How much higher are chemical pollutants indoors vs. outdoors? Benzene 5 times, Xylenes 15 times, N-Octane 80 times, N-Nonane 100 times (Lawrence Berkeley Labs). Do you know that the air in most homes contains: carpet fibers, charred wood fragments, dander, fiberglass fibers, mold spores, paint chips, starch & tire fragments (Healthy Buildings, Inc. database)?

Comment: I am a volunteer working with other volunteers, and the staff and PTA of Whitman Middle School in the Crown Hill neighborhood, to start a school garden, at Whitman. We need to test the soil in a courtyard that is currently covered by 4'X4' concrete pavers (which might present a problem as the cracks between the pavers are only about an inch wide, and they are heavy) for arsenic, lead and asbestos. We can get free arsenic and lead testing through King County, but they do not do asbestos testing. I would like a quote on how much it would cost to test the area we want to put raised beds in for asbestos. We would appreciate a discount, because our cause is noble.

Comment: Mold previously grew in bathroom near heat lamp/vent. I went into the attic and saw improper ventilation. Surrounding insulation has a black layer on top. Neighboring bedroom you can see water has dripped down the wall. I attributed it to it being humid and have had tenants use a dehumidifier, but the corner of the ceiling is darker. Would like someone to at leaset take a look to see if it is a bad mold issue.
