"I got three estimates and went with Deneve. I am pleased with my choice, and after 3 years and still glad. Our neighborhood had a hailstorm and everyone needed new siding. Although Deneve had more customers in line, waiting for their house to get new siding, I never felt that they rushed or in any way compromised the job just to hurry on to the next one.The craftsmen  were all very punctual, professional and picked up after themselves really well. There was a younger guy who seemed to be new and he was carefully supervised, positively supported and was a great addition to the work group. Just as important as the good job they did with the siding, they helped me solve 2 problems I'd been having with the house: Birds kept building nests at the top of the brick columns on my front porch so they fashioned a solution with metal break.  I had previously had an occasional leak from rainwater getting behind my old siding during hard rainstorms. They took special care with the siding in that area and have said that if that happens again with their siding they stand behind their work and will come remedy it."

"We could not be happier with Kris and Rafter K Carpentry. Kris was extremely prompt and professional. He responded within minutes and came to our house for an estimate for the work we requested. His estimate was very fair and so we agreed to have him do repair our kitchen counters. We asked if would be able to fix some other things in our house and he said he could, so we had him replace our bathroom shower door and faucet and repair a door. He came out the next day and everything was great! He was very professional and left the work areas cleaner than he found them!! All this at a price that was less than expected. We have already scheduled another project for Kris to do for us this spring. Highly recommended."

"Bill was very prompt at coming out and giving us an estimate we couldn't quite afford a full deck replacement but he came up with a great idea that would keep us safe and be able to utilize his safety measure in the building of Our Deck next year. I so appreciate his professionalism and letting us know that there's other options than just you have to replace the whole deck I found his honesty refreshing and he is more than fair with his prices and a wonderful personality I would definitely recommend this professional to anyone for anything."

"Jeff and his team were incredibly professional and thorough with the meticulous job we needed help with (sanding away old paint from our deck and restraining it), and even took apart and put our deck railing back together to make sure they could get into all of the nooks and crannies of the small wood pieces. The job was very reasonably priced for the time and effort spent and they worked quickly and efficiently. I would highly recommend them for home renovation projects and will definitely be hiring them in the future should we need any more work done!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Coralville, IA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
