Things started out great. Severen and his company (242 Home Improvement) came recommended and we believed that he could be trusted. He appeared to explain things well and worked with us on the insurance claim. After the roofing job had been completed we noticed a few things that needed to be corrected. One of the employees left their lunch garbage in the attic space, one of the skylights was not centered in the opening, and there was an exhaust vent that was sealed off. I was able to remove the garbage. Severen told us that we could caulk around the skylight if we wanted to but that he was not going to do anything about it. Severen rerouted the exhaust vent tube. Things seemed ok until I started questioning where the vent was rerouted to. After leaving many messages that were not returned and a few calls to the city, where I found out that Severen had not gotten a city permit, he sent one of his employees (Jeff) out to correct the exhaust vent. Jeff was a nice guy but he drilled two large holes in the side of the house and neither of them was in the correct location. Jeff ended up cutting away part of the soffit in order to get the vent attached to the side of the house. Of course I was not happy with this and Jeff told me that he would be back to fix it, but that never happened. I started getting quotes from other contractors to fix the holes in the side of the house and in doing so found out that 242 had also failed to properly install the ridge vent. This means that the roof is not vented which greatly shortens the life of the roof. We tried to resolve this through BBB but as you can see by the C+ rating and the REVOKED accreditation after 15 years they have been unwilling to correct these issues.

242 did a great job on our roof replacement. They were professional, on schedule, and the finished roof looks great. I absolutely recommend 242 for your roofing project.

Our 242 Home Improvement representative provided a clear, detailed initial proposal and answered all our questions. The job was scheduled and completed within the timeframe we requested. We have been very pleased with the end result so far.

The roof looks great, animals are no longer getting in through the gaps in our roof around the chimney and such.
Unfortunately, there is a point where there are 2 different levels of insulation on the roof, right next to each other. At this point, the roof leaked whenever snow or ice would thaw.
We noticed it the next spring 2013. We asked for it to be fixed, and Severan said they would fix it in the fall. We called back in the fall and set a date. We weren't able to be there when they would be there, but they said it would be pretty quick. We took them at their word that they had fixed the problem.
Next spring 2014, it leaked again. We called, and they said they hadn't been able to get out after all. We asked them to fix it, and they said they were very busy at the moment, but they would get it. We called again in the fall, and they put us off some more. I called to say this was getting ridiculous, and to nail down an exact date when they could come and fix it. Severan refused to name a date. I asked him if he was actually going to do this, and he said he was, so I asked him again to name a date. He refused. I told him I didn't want to have to go to another vendor, and it devolved into an argument. It became clear that he was not going to correct this mistake. I haven't heard from him since, and I've since found another vendor to correct the problem.
Bottom line? Our roof leaked, and even if Severan had intended to fix it, we had to harass him for 1 1/2 years and nothing ultimately got done.
"I responded to this issue on more than one occasion and the roof should be fixed at this point. I didnt feel harassed or put out in any fashion until [member's name removed]chise to threaten me! I am always more than happy to address an oversight and went back to address the issue upon her request! I have never avoided a phone call or responsibility so my phone number is the same as it always has been... 563-529-3886. Call for resolution instead of writing a nasty review of someone that hasnt once side-stepped responsibility!"

The project finished up well. Communication and responsiveness was an issue at times. Electrical work that need to be done as part of the project was never mentioned until the end - resulting in additional charges. They don't like to quote the components of the job - just the total price so when part of the job was eliminated the amount to be subtracted was up for debate and not as much as they first claimed it would be.
Response from 242 Home Improvement
"I completed a difficult project that other contractors told this home-owner wasn't possible to put together.I would like to share that this individual was the most difficult customer I have ever dealt with in the 10 years I have been self employed. The only means of communication were via e-mail which makes a project of this magnitude nearly impossible. I won't speak specifically but I am quite certain the other contractors involved were just as disappointed in the lack of communication by the home-owner. The home-owner requested the inside of the breezeway be unfinished and to use siding from an existing wall to make tie-ins where walls were added. Nothing was needed for color match (although we got as close as possible) as home-owners are planning to paint the house next year so the emphasis was on matching siding wood grain instead of color. I would welcome anyone reading this specific review to FIRST: Reference the countless other positive reviews for my company. SECOND: See that my company has maintained an A+ standing with the Better Business Bureau for 9 consecutive years. THIRD: Visit my facebook page at 242 Home Improvement where you can judge the quality of the job in question for yourself. FOURTH: Always remember that no matter what you do to provide some people with impeccable service and quality... there are always going to be people you cannot please. NOTE: These homeowners are currently having my HVAC subcontractor and my electrician complete work (under my supervision) on their property. I am only satisfied when my customers feel comfortable saying the the work we provided was an A rated job and satisfactorily completed. I feel like I have been sucker punched receiving any less, in any scenario; but will continue striving to provide the highest quality craftsmanship for each and every home-owner I come in contact with!!!"

After discovering a leak in our roof, we had several bids. Mr Nelson explained our options to us, and we decided on a tear off, some plywood replacement and a new roof. The work was completed professionally, quickly, and a thorough cleanup was done. The roof looks great!
