I hired Kahlob to build us a custom bench for our bay window. He told me this would be a simple, 2-day project, and quoted $900. He sent me an email *contract* (I did not sign it) stating that I owed $450 upfront and $450 after project completion. I paid him $450 to begin the work on October 8th. His *contract* also stated that he would complete the work *no later than October 12th*. On day 1, I asked Kahlob if it would be possible to add drawers to the bench instead of the cabinets we had discussed previously. He said it would be no problem but would cost about $200 more in materials and labor. I agreed to the extra $200, making it $650 owed at project completion. Kahlob started working on the bench, and at first, it looked like he was doing an OK job, just moving a little slow. The October 12th deadline came and went, and Kahlob had barely made progress. He had a new baby so my husband and I tried to be understanding, and as flexible as possible. We bought him food regularly, and even once sent home a meal for his wife to alleviate their stress. But very quickly things started going downhill; it became very clear that Kahlob had no clue what he was doing. I will let the photos speak for themselves about the quality of his work, but watching it in person was truly one of the most bizarre experiences of my life. He kept doing really strange things like putting on thick layers of paint, then sanding and peeling it off. He also kept trying to cover up his mistakes with bizarre *designs* like adding extra layers of crown molding to cover up nail holes. He could not make the drawers close properly so he tried to play it off like a design feature. The work dragged on for weeks, and during this time Kahlob was never once on time. He would always text me that he was *on the way*, but would not show up until 2-3 hours later, even though he lives about 40 minutes away. He would give excuses like that he was painting the drawers in his shop, and then arrive later with the drawers completely unpainted. I would ask him to arrive early and leave early, but he would constantly arrive hours late and stay until 8 or 9 pm. 10 days past the agreed deadline, we realized the situation was helpless. The work Kahlob had done was a total disaster, was nowhere near complete, and we could not tolerate having him in our house anymore. We sent him home and told him we would be hiring another contractor to repair his work and complete the project. I politely thanked him for his time and told him I would be willing to pay him whatever remained from the $650 minus the cost of repairing and completing his work. Kahlob immediately turned hostile and began threatening us. He sent me an invoice for $1582.00 and threatened that if I did not pay it he would file a lien against our house. I never at any point agreed to pay him $1582.00, and especially not for incomplete, awful work. I had a professional, award-winning contractor come to our house to assess the work of Kahlob, and he was horrified. He said it was the worst contractor work that he had ever seen, and that it was completely unsalvageable. I had to hire a team to completely demolish and remove the work that Kahlob did, and after removing it they commented that they did not believe he was a trained carpenter. A month later, 2B Contractors continues to send fraudulent invoices for over $1600, under the threat of filing a lien on our house. Thankfully we are educated people who know our rights and are not intimidated by them. But anyone who considers hiring them should understand who they are dealing with: an amateur with poor workmanship, who will turn hostile, and make threats if you are dissatisfied with their work.
