What a mistake: * First and foremost - the company wanted me to commit insurance fraud - they wanted to charge $4,500 for a chimney cap and chase and said they would pay my insurance deductible. The office manager/scheduler called me saying â Mr K. are you sitting down because the project is going to cost $4,500â ¦.however if you run this through your insurance company, we will pay the deductible for you.â I refused to do that and they eventually came back with an official quote for $2,711 for the same work. * I had to ask multiple times for a written quote until they figured out that I was not going to submit an insurance claim to support their effort to overcharge my insurance company. * A Chimney Expert was one of the most unprofessional, non-customer oriented company I have ever contracted. Their scheduler constantly had mixed information from what was communicated just a day before. * They moved the work date several times with short notice, especially when I signed the contract for the work to start the following day, and they switched the work date right after. * No pictures of the before-and-after complete work were provided. * One of the workers basically barged into the house to use the bathroom. * They put up a scaffolding to take measurements for the cap, when other contractors seemed to have ladders that would get them to the roof and chimney top. They left the scaffolding in place without a signed contract of which other contractors did not want to quote the job thinking A Chimney Expert would get the job with the end. * The scaffolding was up for 2.5 weeks just to put a chimney cap on the house., and they left a trailer in front of the house for that whole time. * When I went to pay the 30% down payment to start the work, their PayPal payment method (as was provided on their invoice), PayPal invoiced me for the full amount of the quote $990. When I asked Chimney Expert to be refunded the remaining 70% until the work was completed (per their contract terms, 70% or remainder due upon completion) the office person/scheduler expressed her **anger** that I used PayPal saying 'we have to pay PayPal a service fee for the transaction, but never addressed my request for the refund of the 70%/remainder until they completed the work. * After paying for the total up front for the inspection, cap and cleaning - when it came time for cleaning the chimney they came in to start the inspection/cleaning and indicated **it did not need to be swept as it looked ok** After reminding the owner Paul we had already paid for the cleaning, we insisted they do it - which they did begrudgingly. * Never a â thank you for your business, and we were consistently treated as if we were asking a lot of them. * Tried to charge me $295 to cut one branch that was near the chimney cap.
Response from Company:
Wow! We are very surprised that Mr. K[Consumer name withheld at their request], has written such a scathing review! First, he fails to mention that the scaffolding which was erected was just over 40 feet high and which took 3-4 guys one whole day to erect. We inspected his chimney and it was clear that the tree branch is what knocked off and damaged his chimney cap (prefab). We suggested that he phone his insurance company to see if they would cover the cost for the cap and in addition, replace his chase cover. This is not fraud. If an Act of God damages a chimney, the insurance companies will cover the cost to repair the damage. Clearly, he did not understand what we were proposing. Mr. K[Consumer name withheld at their request] asked us to give him some time to decide which direction he was headed. In the interim, he was calling other companies (while using our scaffolding) for better quotes. Our quote for the $4500 included removing the tree branch, furnish/install a custom-cut chase cover, and furnish/install a new cap. Mr. K[Consumer name withheld at their request] did not contact us for approximately 7 days. He couldn't find another company who could match our pricing. When we scheduled to install only the (cap), on three separate dates, it snowed and/or rained. He also fails to mention that the weather was the reason we couldn't complete the job. His cap was hit by the tree branch which damaged and caused the cap to come loose and fall. We explained that this is something that could possibly be covered by his insurance company. This was an "Act of God". Not a man-made error. Mr. K[Consumer name withheld at their request] was difficult to communicate with. Rarely did he ever answer his phone. It always went to voice mail. This customer could have easily instructed us to remove the scaffolding but he realized the only way to complete the work was by using scaffolding. He is disgruntled because he could not find another company to correct his problem for less money than what we charged. At any time, he could have said, "Remove the scaffolding" but he never did. We asked specifically where we could park the trailer and he advised us to park the trailer right where it stayed until we were finally to remove the scaffolding on a "clear, non-precipitous, sun shiny day. In this case, the customer was way off base and should be ashamed of himself for stretching the facts/truth. As we mentioned earlier, he had full control of whether or not he would work with us or find another company. He could have called another company and we would have NEVER erected scaffolding just to inspect his extremely high and difficult to reach chimney chase/cap. One more thing... he thinks $295 is too much to trim a tree branch which is 45 feet in the air! This customer wasn't going to get on the scaffolding.. it was way too dangerous for him. Well, how does he think we feel when we have to go to extreme measures just to reach a chimney top!

Their staff was very quick to respond to my questions, and completed the work very efficiently.
Response from Company:
Thank you for your review. Our work is specific and can be very dangerous. Thank you for noticing.

I found this pro to be less than professional with booking and follow up. The service techs were nice, however, I was given a huge quote for work that should be done without any discussion about some of the smaller items of concern. For instance, we need a cap on the chimney but a quote for that was not laid out. To me it seems they wanted to reline the chimney and nothing else was worth talking about. I would recommend using someone else and asking for a thorough quote.
Response from Company:
We are very sorry that Mr. H[Consumer name withheld at their request] feels we were less than professional. His appointment was made the same day he requested assistance. Our inspection found not only that he needed a cap, but more importantly, his fireplace flue liner was coated with third-degree creosote. Third degree creosote causes chimney fires. We had to treat for a dangerous third degree before we could move forward. We can not return earlier than three days once the third degree was treated. We informed him of areas of his system which should also be considered for corrections. We stopped a potentially hazardous condition for this customer whose house could possibly have had a chimney fire. We were extremely professional, courteous, and timely. We prevented a potential home and life-threatening situation. For that, you would think this customer would be grateful.

Their work is over priced.
Response from Company:
This customer was aware of our prices before we made an appointment with him. He indicated that our prices were lower than our competitors. We are not sure why we got this poor review because he was extremely gracious, grateful, and even gave the technicians a tip!
