Ascend did a great job painting our high ceiling foyer. The contractor, Blake, was flexible with his time and stopped by to assess the area and give us an accurate quote. He pays great attention to detail and made sure it met his standards. Prior to starting the job he made sure to clearly explain what exactly would be painted. Highly recommend this company for any renovation needs.

Bathroom - Remodel
I have an attached garage with a rooftop deck. Original contract with Ascend was for $54,100 to replace the garage roof and deck, plus repair some damaged drywall in the garage. Additional water damage was discovered, leading to a requirement to have engineering plans created and a permit approved. Cost for the plans was $6,000. Plans were completed, and we asked for an estimated both verbally and via email. Contractor emails demonstrate desire to not provide any estimate. Contractor finally relents and provides a verbal estimate of $25,000 - $35,000 additional cost. This is despite having full engineering plans that they created. Bait and Switch Six weeks pass while the permit is being reviewed. Permit is approved on a Friday, we receive a change order form for $63,000 late on Sunday night, and early Monday morning they show with a crew. This is the start of their pressure campaign. Total cost of the project is now $123,100 including original contract, change order, and engineering plans. More than 2x the original. I reviewed the costs with other contractors who all agreed the additional cost was unreasonable. I asked Ascend to explain the variance to their original estimate versus the change order, their engineering plans, and the permit. While Ascend asserted early on that it was the county that required changes, they could produce no evidence of any pushback from the county. They said that the cost was due entirely to building codes. Throughout they continued to assert many ways where the cost could go higher and that we should expect even more costs. They had the plans, they are supposed to know the building codes, and they had six weeks to amend their estimate. What became clear was they were using the permit as leverage to force me into the higher contract. To their credit, they did acknowledge the sequence of us receiving the change order late at night followed by early morning crew arrival could appear as aggressive and offered us a $10,000 discount if we would do a video promoting them. We declined. Bad Faith Negotiations What followed was a series of events whereby they would agree to an issue, and then quickly renege on the agreement. 1. They initially agreed to split the additional work with another contractor. I have text exchanges with them. We agree on which work Ascend would perform and what other contractors would perform. At their request, I contacted the county to split the permit responsibilities. They also made it clear that they would not honor any warranty on the work they performed if a different contractor's work even touched theirs. For example, if the new contractor's stairs touched their deck (which the stairs is supposed to connect to the deck). 24 hours later they issued a stop work order to me saying that the permit gave them the right to prevent me from engaging other contractors. 2. The later called me to tell me they would call the police on any new contractor I hired. They said they would not do that if I agreed to pay them a fee of $30,000 to allow them to be the general contractor. With the provision that any work they didn't approve of would be torn out and replaced at my expense. At this point I confronted them with the evidence of the bait and switch. I also informed them that I was in contact with the county agency who recommended I ask Ascend to transfer the permit to me. Ascend called me later to say that they would agree to the permit transfer and would settle the original contract. 24 hours later they issue a letter saying they refused to transfer the permit until they could send a settlement agreement. No such settlement agreement was sent. 3. I hired an attorney who issued a Demand Memorandum which required an affirmative response. Ascend never responded and has stopped answering emails, text messa...

Had several projects done - bathroom remodel, fix and paint outside the house, electrical work Blake was attentive and great to work with. Bathroom looks great. The reasons for low rating - Paining - had multiple issues with the painter. Work he did had to be redone by others. Major issue - when painter was working on outside molding and painting, he put nails (every nail) through sprinkler wiring and I had to rewire the whole system after they left. This does not speak of experience on the end of the contractor. Electrical - had to rewire several plugs in a room. A few months later all lights in the room went out. Had to call an electrician to fix - the comment from the electrician was - whoever worked on this did a Mickey Mouse job. Having to pay twice for same work in the same year is just bot something I expected to do Finally - appears that many workers are disgruntled. Several workers have mentioned that management does not know what they suggest or agree to.

"Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience, it is worth mentioning we never received any notification from you regarding issues with the electrical, paint or sprinkler system. All of our work on your home carried a minimum 5-Year Workmanship Warranty and a 10-Workmanship for the Bathroom, that would have covered any issues that came up. When we left your house there was no underlying issues. We did mentioned at the time your houses electrical system was concerning and seemed Mickey Mouse. The work we preformed was installing a dedicated electrical line and New Breaker from your sub-panel to the Garage. Any electrical work we did flowed from there, however there still were other outlets/lights on the old electrical system. Our assumption is the new electrical problems stemmed from there. We really did enjoy working with you on your many projects and hope to rectify this in the near future!"

Blake did an outstanding job assessing, estimating, and managing our roof repair job. It was a complete replacement of an old shake roof with modern roofing materials. The project included a complicated flat section in addition to multiple slanted sections with several valleys. Follow up was quick and effective.

Blake Thomas of Ascend Renovation And Roofing is the best! When an atmospheric river tore apart the roof of our 115-year-old 2-story Oakland house in 2021 we got several repair estimates. We chose Blake for an entire new roof, furnace and main electrical connection because he did the most thorough inspection of the damage. Once the job started, he was always available if we had questions, and the work was high quality. He cared about making sure we were pleased. He also advised us about the financing. If we have major renovations again, we will choose Blake Thomas.

Project Manager was very efficient. Giving Ideas on where to purchase Items For the remodel. There were additional order changes along the way that the Project manager arranged to be completed along with the original project. We enjoy the new Bathroom.
