I did not have a good experience overall with Abney Custom Carpentry. It started out good and I believed it would turn out well but in the end I was completely disappointed. We had water leaks and water damage on the wood and sheetrock around 4 windows in our home. The job consisted of repairing damaged sheetrock around the 4 windows, replace the window sills on 3 of the 4 windows, and sand, caulk and paint the sheetrock and window sills. When Ralph quoted, he was knowledgeable and gave the impression that he would make it look good as new. He even put some mortar repair on the outside around the windows and did some caulking to try to stop the leaks. I appreciated that and felt like he was trying to help. The leaks werent fixed but I cant fault him as it was not what he was enlisted to do. We fixed the leaks and asked him to start. Over the course of the job there were approximately 10 reschedules on his part on the morning of. At first we werent bothered by this but it became excessive and inconvenient for us. My wife was taking kids to her parents each time to not be in the way. Excuses included car trouble, family emergencies, doctor appointment going over time, health concerns, other jobs had emergencies he had to immediately attend to, other jobs running over, he was too wet from doing a job so he couldnt come, etc. We understand personal issues but come on. He worked a couple hours 2 days and said he would complete morning of the third. I work from home. He texted me on the 3rd day because I was on the phone. He said he was done and that he had to run but I could venmo the final half of what I owed him. I checked the final product. To my disappointment, it was left incomplete and frankly looked absolutely terrible. I called him and said I was not satisfied with the result and I had these issues 1-The 3 window sills were not properly cut and had big gaps where they were to butt against wall. (See pics 1-3. SEE GOOGLE REVIEW FOR PICS) 2-Sanding, Caulking, and painting was very sloppy and not completed. It looked amateur at best (see pics 4-8). 3-In our dining room window, there was still bubbling of existing paint where water got behind the paint 4-He did not put the blind mounting hardware back up and remount the blinds which we said he would do. How anyone claiming to be a professional could leave that as the final product is shocking, sad, and disappointing. He blamed his assistant for the unfinished caulk and paint job but somehow didnt notice this when he determined he was done. Regarding the 6 gaps, he said he miscut all 3 sills and just put them in anyways. Surprising for a carpenter to be ok with that. He said he would come back the next day and fix everything and make it look right. I expressed concern about the gaps and indicated I thought he would have to replace the whole sills to make them look right. He said he could fix them and promised me I would not be able to see the seams. I said that it was important that the sills look right and that it didnt look like a band-aid was put on it if he went the repair route. He came the next day and worked on it and said he was done. The seams were still there. I asked him to fix the seams like he promised. He worked about 15-20 mins more and got me back over. I told him the seams are still there and I wasnt happy. He said he was done and wouldnt work anymore on it. He said forget paying him final payment. I said ok then. He huffed and puffed out and kept saying Merry Christmas and said I was knit picking him. I told him that I requested for the sills to be redone and that if he would have cut them right or fixed it the first time we wouldnt be in the situation (See pics 9-14 for end result with visible seams). Overall I was disappointed and could not recommend. Very unprofessional, disrespectful, and tried to pass incomplete work as done.

This has been a very upsetting experience. The contractor was chosen because he appeared confident in his abilities to provide us with beautiful kitchen cabinets. Instead, we are left with kitchen cabinets that are so bad that we need to carry out the following work: 1. Remove all 26 cabinet doors, sand them down to the bare wood, fill where required, have them professionally painted and then refit to cabinets. 2. Fit rubber stops to six of the 26 doors. 3. Adjust four of the doors so they are flush with the cabinet face. 4. Adjust two sets of adjacent doors so they dont touch to prevents proper closure. 5. Remove all 13 drawers, sand down the fronts to the bare wood, fill where required, and have them professionally painted. 6. None of the 13 operating drawer fronts are flush with the cabinet face. In the worst case only one of the four rubber stops makes contact and only one of the two drawer rails is attached at the rear. The drawer rails should have been placed in position before the granite counter tops were installed in order to make the drawer fronts flush with the cabinet face. Now, this is a difficult fix because access is restricted. 7. Three of the drawers have nails protruding through to the inside of the drawer box. 8. Refit several drawer handles to make them horizontal. 9. Sand down all cabinet box faces in situ to the bare wood, fill where required, and have them professionally painted. 10. Install the 5th under cabinet light (4 are already installed). 11. Remount the microwave (it rocks on its mount when the door is opened). 12. Install the backsplash tile (included in contract but not done).

I hired Ralph of Abney Custom Carpentry to fix some damage caused by a broken water pipe, he did such a bad job that I will need to hire someone else to redo all his work. He said that he was finished and expected final payment, and because I was not there (It is a home that I own but I have someone renting it, I live in another state), I paid him. I think that he figured that he could just do a bad job and I would not know. Once I got someone to send me photos of his work I realized that I had got lied. I contacted him about what I saw in the photos and Ralph stated that he would fix what I pointed out, but it is all so obvious that he had to know that it was just a horrible job while he was doing it, and he just did not care. He did not texture the ceiling, or paint it right. He used a paint color that did not match the walls. His drywall repairs have cracks, it was not sanded and there is even one place in the wall that has a hole in the corner. Then he paints over it with the wrong color and gloss, so all the walls will need to be repainted. The floor that he put down is the wrong color, uneven, has scratches and gouges in it and does not even go to the wall is some parts, there are as much a 2 to 4 inches that does not go to the wall in some areas. The trim that he did is a joke, its not the same size, its cut at a 90 degree next to the 45 degree and is not painted or calked. I do not know how this guy calls himself a contractor or is allowed to be on Home Advisor but I would not recommend him to do anything. I gave him over a month to get back and fix it, but he does not seem to care. I now have to get someone to redo the floor, ceiling and walls. If he is proud to but his name to this work, he should not be in business. Ralph is saying that he went out several times is an attempt to fix his work. All I can say is Ralph, If they let me post photos of your work here, you would not be on Home Advisor. There is no fixing your work. Everything needs to be redone, and if you think that you were going to be able to just go back and knock out the things that I pointed out, that tells me you have no idea how bad you did. The entire floor has to be replaced. The paint job is a joke, its not only the wrong color but it looks like you a 5-year old painted it. How the hell can you put different size molding cut the way you did and act like it is just a small thing. You knew it was wrong when you were doing it, so why should you be shocked when I am not happy with your work. It is going to cost me $5200 to fix your work. So if you were trying to get there to fix it, my question is how could you have done so bad to begin with? You knew that it looked bad; you just knew that I was not there to see it. It is been over a month, You never called anyone, you said that you stopped by and sent one text and no one was there or answered. You never had a problem calling when you were doing the work. The guy that is there fixing your work seems to be able to get someone on the phone and get in there and fix it. Shame on you Ralph. You are the people that give contractors a bad name.
Response from Abney Custom Carpentry
"mr. Farris. I went out to the property 3 times to adjust the issues and noone answered the door. I also contacted your property manager to set up time but never got a response. I was more than willing to take care of the issues and even went there but no one was there."

The owner, Ralph, answers all calls and if he's not available he returns the call promptly. His work repairing my bathroom vanity is impeccable. He spot-on matched the finish color and adjusted the drawers perfectly. As a result I have more work for him and I encourage anyone in the Mobile, Alabama area to use his fine service.

Broke base for toilet then denied he broke it. Cost a hundred to repair after his 75.00 repair. Stay far away. If you won't stand behind your job should not be allowed on site.
Response from Abney Custom Carpentry
"Your toilet flange was already broken. All I did was replace a broken tile. You are the one who removed the toilet. I never touched the flange until going to reset the toilet you removed. After putting the toilet back down, it was noticed that your flange was cracked. even after I showed you the flange was broken after trying to put the nut on the Johnny bolt that kept spinning, I showed you what you could use to fix it since I was called out to fix one broken tile and didn't have any plumbing tools in my truck since there was not supposed to be any plumbing work, you asked me to come over to your other house and do work there."

Hired him several jobs. Doing the hardy board on the back wall of the house this has to be removed and replaced. Had to pay someone else to come out to complete the job he did.
Response from Abney Custom Carpentry
"(consumer name withheld per their request) I just saw your bogus review on my home Advisor site. I am writing you as a professional,  I did everything above and beyond for you on the contracted job. There was nothing wrong with the harding board that I put up ( 2 pieces). You are the one that was very rude and obnoxious with me over issues that were not caused by me. You also under paid me for a $310.00 job that I accepted to try and make you happy because I was trying to help you out since the guy prior to me actually did a bad job and I fixed his problematic work. Plus I was pressure washing the deck for you which was not in my contract because you have back issues and I truly understand how that is since I had back surgery the prior year.  You are the one that decided to close the contract after you did not want to pay me the full amount of the pressure washing job I did 4 times because of the old wood that did have a clear coat on it. Which I have video of as I was pressure washing it off. I also have video of you cussing me out when I gave you the bill for it. I also have ALL my calls recorded when you called me cussing me again because of the pressure treated Lumber kept leaving a chemical composition  on the surface which you verified by scraping some of the powder which was probably arsenic and took it to home Depot to have it examined and the gentleman told you exactly what I told you it was after you were trying to blame me for the arsenic composition used to pressure treat the wood was continuously coming to the surface after each pressure washing I did which was 4 times an hour each time. I even came out in a Sunday to do another two runs of pressure washing. The door I ordered from home Depot did not come in on the day that it was supposed to because Masonite said they ran out of door parts to build your custom order door. It was ordered two weeks before it was supposed to be installed. It was not delivered until 4 weeks after it was ordered and the very same day that you decided to "go another route" and cancelled the contract. You did not complain about any of the quality of my work at all when we were there. The harding board you claim to have had been replaced was on the house after the second day I was on the job.  We have had plenty of times that I was coming back out there to pressure washing your deck and the entire 4 weeks of waiting on your door and the day you decided you did not want me to finish the other part of the contract because the door was late. I have copies of every correspondence between us as well as the abuse you Gave me while I was only there to help you out since you were burnt by your former contractor. I will wait 48 hours for the bogus review and slander of me to be removed off of the site before I take legal action for this. Have a great new year. Sincerely,  Ralph Abney  In addition the initial delay to your job was due to the flooring company not leveling the floor of your house so I could do my"

I called Abney Custom Carpentry for my kitchen remodel. Mr. Ralph came the next day and gave me a very fair quote. My kitchen turned into my dream kitchen, despite a few mishaps. I had purchased a "bargain" lazy susan cabinet that was the driving inspiration piece of my remodel which Mr. Ralph was to simply install and custom build the other cabinets. However, I failed to measure the door to the house and it was too big to get through. I was devastated and on the verge of tears when I learned that I could not afford for Mr. Ralph to build that cabinet (he only uses birch wood and mine was particle board). But, he build it and charged me for materials only. He is so awesome. Even when he got sick, he still came and completed the job in the one week he had promised. I really appreciated his advice and generosity in helping me get through a couple of DIY projects that I was doing while he was here. Kitchen remodels are famous for being full of stress and drama. With Mr. Ralph I did not have that experience, Thank you Mr. Ralph for everything.

Mr. Abney but after so many weeks of trying to get things worked out. I gave up. His expertise is not fences. He built the fence in the rain most of the time. The boards were substandard. They warped and popped out the screws. Screws were left all around the gate and in the driveway. The boards on the other side of the house have began to pop screws also. On our gate, the board are cut very crooked across the bottom. This was the second attempt to get a gate that would open for us. The boards used were from the first attempt. I should have used a big fence company to replace the fencing that was in place before this. I wanted to give small business a chance. I liked Mr. Abney very much, he is very hard worker but to my dismay not a fence builder.
Response from Abney Custom Carpentry
"I am sorry that this was not a pleasurable experience but after you had me drop my price to below market cost the only material I could get for your job and the cost that you wanted was the bottom end of the fence product. The warping of the gap covering boards is totally on you because I had a much wider board on there to cover the gaps as you asked and you made me cut them smaller 4 more time until they were only 1 3/4" wide so obviously with the heat drying out the pressure treated lumber they warped because they could only have one screw in three different locations. as far as the cut on the gate it had to be cut to allow for the grade of your yard that I told you would have to be addressed or the gate would not open. there was an attempt that you all made to grade the swing area of the fence but you only graded about 2 foot of the swing and then decided it was too much work for you to do. you went from a smaller gate to a much bigger one that has more swing radius. Also during that time my mother became very ill and then passed away so my mind was not quite where it need to be which is no excuse but instead of not doing any work at all to take time to grieve I rushed back to work to try and solve the issue."
