Do not use this company, they make promises and they do not follow through, they blame anybody else including Covid. They make it sound that you will have the option to select something but do not do that at the end. 90 day job is now going into the 10th month.
Response from Active Design and Build
"Hi Angela -- As you know, we have been communicating regularly with you to address your concerns. We're still committed to working with you regarding your concerns and actively doing so. Please feel free to contact our office directly anytime. We encourage all our clients to have adequate financing in place prior to beginning a project. We were initially starting your project in December 2021, but that was pushed back to February 2022 for non-payment reasons. It is difficult to guarantee any kind of a timeline when funding and timely payments have been an issue for most of this project. As you have discovered, very few lenders, if any, will finance a large-scale project after work has begun, leaving you to seek funds through other means. Although we are a mid-sized construction firm, we do not have the liquidity to float the project costs for each of our clients. Our contract is that as we complete work you make timely progress payments on invoices that are sent. Labor and material shortages have plagued our industry since the economy shut down for CoVid in 2020 and we are only now beginning to see signs of them normalizing late in 2022. This is not unique to construction as a most industry are experiencing this on a global scale. This is why we typically order all materials in advance of starting any project so that can properly set a timeline based on lead times of materials. When projects are not properly funded it compounds project delays as we are unable to order materials timely or make timely payments to our trade partners. Additionally, trade partners tend to prioritize projects they feel confident they will be paid on when their work is completed. I am happy that we were able to work through those financial issues and that we are now nearly finished 6 months later. We are committed to wrapping up this project for you as soon as you have your homeowner-supplied countertops installed and fan lights on site which I understand are still a few weeks out. Should you have any more concerns please reach out to us directly and we would be happy to work with you to address each of these concerns. Thank you for your honest and sincere feedback we know you will be happy with your space once its completed."

Hired ADB to remodel 2750 sq ft home. Full gut. Their hook was optimize cost by going thru design process to eliminate unexpected problems. Paid the Deposit, Great...NOT SO MUCH, the design process has taken close to 2 months, costing me time and eventually more money. We have to rent as we wait for remodel to be completed. After hearing several times we are close to permit, I decided to voice my concerns. The owner Dustin does not make himself readily available, as you are set up with design team, all communications set up through them. I asked if I could speak with Dustin as I believed it should be relayed directly to him. Set voice meeting around noon. Noon turns out to be 2:00 pm. Ok, this business has no concept of timely. Let Dustin know we are concerned about the already behind design process and that our confidence in proceeding with them to build the project was not great. We are considering moving in another direction for build. Dustin tried to assure us they would be ready once permitted. In an attempt to see if maybe we could move in on a phase, instead of completion so we could avoid any more rental cost/time, his response was well it would increase his cost. Its his delay, so it should cost him. Next day miraculously all documents are ready set for permit. But wanted us committed to proceed with ADB. I explained again that I was not confident with ADB handling it, we wanted to field a couple more quotes before proceeding. So I requested if I could get plans ready for permit, I would pay design fee in full once I reviewed (want to make sure all is correct). Get email from design team later that night. Explained what the fee does not include. Once ADB received final payment and confirmed payment, they would send completed plans. I guess out of spite the email also indicated that they were out next 2 days, the weekend, and Monday. Purposefully delaying the process further. This is a company with no integrity. Avoid their gimmick. Final quote.. no savings UPDATE: After Talking with Dustin we came to agreement to receive work paid for design. After receiving the design and reviewing it, we were happy to see it met our expectations. Melissa's, the designer, work was amazing. She really captured the vision we had for our home. It is really unfortunate that Dustin could not move the entire project along while the design was being prepared, as we lost some valuable time and money. Unfortunately we decided not to proceed with ADB, which means we will not have Melissa onboard to see her work become reality. I have updated the rating to reflect Melissa's great design and hard work. I would recommend anyone considering ADB for their project to get some type of commitment upfront to timeline of project start/completion.

"Hi, George. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide feedback. We are happy to help you further should you have any more concerns please contact our office directly. We definitely have a very specific and detailed process here at Active Design & Build. We believe in the dialing into the planning process prior to starting the build so the result is a smother build process. Given the large-scale project you are undertaking this is a critical step that is sometimes rushed or overlooked entirely by homeowners, leading to problems occurring during the build. Active Design & Build is unique, in that we offer a, "Design Only", option so that you can feel confident in our fixed bids to complete the build. You elected this option; our policy is to collect payment in full prior to releasing our proprietary designs as it is our only way to guarantee payment for the design work. Although we had built trust with you by the time you made your request to receive a copy of our "permit ready" designs prior to making your full payment, we were not comfortable accommodating your request until we collected full payment for them as your intent was to "solicit bids from other contractors" at that time. Furthermore, we are a fully insured licensed General Contractor who can not begin work without an approved building permit. I understand that some builders might be okay bending the rules, however we are not okay with risking our license or insurance company dropping us because you were asking us to begin work prior to finishing the design and having a permit. Again, we are here and happy to help you further with this issue if you would like to contact our office directly."

Active Design & Build did an excellent design and execution in our kitchen remodel which was a complete gut job to the studs with a new layout which now looks amazing, even refinished hardwood floors. I like the transparency of costs, management of expectations, all the dust mitigation efforts, planned schedules and ultimately the fact that they are upstanding people who are accountable which is hard to find. ADB did a great job considering it was during Covid-19 which certainly affected some labor availability due to exposure protocols and most supply chains everywhere. They did a great job managing trades to not expose customers which is commendable. Very pleased with the level of care and the end result and would recommend them, not to mention use them again.

ADB recently finished our basement. The job came in nearly on schedule, in spite of the difficulties due to the pandemic. The design team did a wonderful job figuring out what we wanted and making it happen. We are really pleased with the result. Excellent work and great communications with the Project Manager.

We had a wonderful experience with the team at Active Design and Build. They performed an extensive renovation of our 6 bed, 4 bath home in Denver that has original 1920s construction. Going into the project, we knew we had a reasonable budget to address many of the core issues. However, we were also prepared to face the reality that some items would need to remain out of scope and be addressed in the coming years, as our finances permitted. Fortunately, the ADB team took great care in creating a project design that balanced our needs, wants, and budget to make our vision for our home a reality. The build process was seamless. ADB handled all aspects of the design, permitting, building approvals, on-site deliveries, and build out. All we had to do was check on progress and selections in the client portal. That is another thing we really liked about the company, they embrace technology and have a client portal that allows you to review invoices, make payments, approve changes, and our favorite feature: Review photos of the project as it progresses. They continue to impress even after our project ended, as we had additional small things that we wanted to have done and ADB came back several months later, at no cost! We are incredibly happy with the final product and cannot thank the entire team enough for making the renovation such a pleasant experience and leaving us with our beautiful home we have dreamed about for years. We look forward to inviting our friends and family over for the holidays once we return to normalcy from the effects of Covid.

We are 8+ months in to a guaranteed 2 month completion and there is no end in sight. Dustin, the owner, does not respond and everyone in the company, including his partner Paul left. Poor quality trades people who often do not show and there is no accountability or oversight. They are all about marketing and getting the next customer to pay up front. Do yourself a favor and call 3-4 references that have just finished or are actively having work done. Run away!
Response from Active Design and Build
"Hi, Tom. Thank you for your sincere review. We are so sorry your project aligned during such an unusual global event and it has extended the completion date of your project. We are frustrated too. As a company, we were not prepared to respond to a pandemic and it sent us, along with the rest of the industry, reeling. Between permitting and inspections offices completely shutting down for months, and having to furlough several employees, we have admittedly been left wounded and humbled, and we are working hard to pick up the pieces. You are correct that one of our owners (Paul) had to make a difficult life choice to pursue a more secure paycheck early on in these uncertain economic times, as did many people globally. However, we are greasing up the cogs and are starting to rehire furloughed employees and get back on track. We are confident that under normal circumstances, your project would have been completed in 2 months, as promised. As a reminder, your remodel is covered under our 5-year warranty should you have any concerns about the quality of work performed during the timeline of your project. Please contact us directly if you have any questions and we will be happy to assist you."

This was a truly amazing experience for my family. We had a new home built and hired Active Design & Build to finish our basement with 2 bedrooms, bathroom game room, living space and awesome bar. From the consultation process with Paul and Jessica through the final finish, Active Design was super hands on with the project with a project manager on site daily. Their designer Jessica was so helpful in helping us bring our vision to life, knowing just where to take some risks and where to stay safe. The communication with the company was outstanding through their own system which allowed us to communicate with each trade and with the project manager or designer directly. This helped ease our mind through the project and knowing where we were. Brandon was our project manager and I cannot say enough good things about him and how he handled this project, he was always so respectful and confident and we knew when he said he would look in to something he was doing it and it would be handled. The timeline for the project was explained and we were able to monitor it through the app and with daily updates from our project manager during the process and we were always kept in the loop throughout. We were given a price for our project and they never asked us for more money. The price was the price. Which was reassuring as you hear many situations where youre quoted a price and it continues to rise and rise throughout the project. My family and myself are thrilled with the finish product of our basement. The final product is even more amazing than we could have expected. This was a big project of 2300+ square feet and we feel like we have the absolute best product which has received so many compliments from friends family and neighbors. I would highly recommend this company for any remodel project big or small.

We have never undertaken a major renovation like finishing an unfinished basement and really did not know where to start. The Team at Active Design were terrific. While not the cheapest (but definitely less expensive than others), they made the whole process easy, fun and delivered a wonderful living space. Jessica, the designer, really came through with an awesome design and helped us select the materials. Paul, Ted and the whole team, despite many challenges and the holidays, kept our project on schedule. The portal Is really useful - we could ask questions any time day or night, check our project schedule, make payments, upload appliance specs, etc... made the whole project a breez. And the team was very responsive. The tradesmen were friendly and knowledgeable and did great work. They guarantee their contracted project schedule. The price quoted was pretty darn close - we made a couple of changes mid-project in terms of upgraded material which changed the final cost. And when we ran into some issues with the shower floor, they upgraded us to a tile floor free of charge. All of their work come with a warranty which really lessened our anxiety. There were some minor communication issues along the way but a less than knowledgeable homeowner probably contributed most to those issues. Overall, we could not be more happy. Active Design was true to their word and delivered on our high expectations.

I was somewhat daunted by the prospect of remodeling a complete basement, but Active Design & Build made the process straightforward and affordable. Paul and Aaron and I sat down to discuss the total cost (which was substantially less than the prices other contractors had quoted) and they worked with me to find cost-cutting options to keep the total within my budget. They were informative and clear as to what our responsibilities would be in the process. I felt comfortable asking questions and Paul, Aaron, and Dustin were always courteous and patient in their responses. As a result, there were very few surprises in the remodeling process itself. The various tradespeople were courteous and hard-working, and to my delighted surprise did a rather good job of keeping the work areas clean and neat at the end of each work day. The project took about a week longer than proposed, but some of that delay was due to unforeseen code changes. I did like the Buildertrend.net website that the company uses to keep communication smooth and continuous between Active Design & Build and the client. It's a central hub where messages can be sent and where photos, comments, a calendar, payment information, a to-do list and a host of other important items can be found. The project manager, Mark, was really, really helpful, coming by almost every day as the project got underway, explaining when folks were coming, and what to expect at each stage of the work. He was available every time I called, which I appreciated. And finally, I am thrilled with the results of everyone's hard work. Thanks to Active Design and Build, my basement is now an area where I can entertain family and friends in a beautiful, updated, and relaxing atmosphere.

Deciding on a major Kitchen Remodel, we contacted several design firms. Active Design came in thousands of dollars less than most other companies & after talking with their salesperson Paul, and designer Jessica ~ they just felt right for us. We had high hopes, and Boy, did they deliver! Being so respectful from start to finish ~ they even put up tarps to keep the construction dust from the rest of our home. We found out that the people working for them are true Artisans. They were so mindful of doing everything we wanted done, and delivered more than we expected. On top of all else, they finished on time and on budget! Hurray for All of the people at Active Design!!
