I had some structural worries about a home I recently acquired and Greg completed a 2+ hour inspection, answered all of my questions, and gave me some great, honest advice about my concerns. I would recommend Area to anyone who needs good advice about any structural concerns on a property.

I needed someone in the NE to help me with a project to do a load calc for a project. I currently have one I use in other States. They were able to do the site visit and meet me which was very important to me. They were flexible with my time. They did a load calculation and advise on the structural support and work that would be needed. After advising the scope of work I agreed to have them do the work and it came in on target with the proposal. Last they cleaned up after their work!

We requested that Greg perform a structural assessment of our rowhouse. Over the phone he said to plan for up to three hours. When he arrived, he immediately made a comment about how he wouldn't want to live in Mount Vernon. It also surprised us when he asked where we wanted him to start, since we expected expert guidance from him. He looked at the outside of the house for a few minutes, then went into the bottom story where our tenants live. He brushed off one tenant's concerns about cracks in the walls, and very obviously noticed a picture of our (male) tenants together, who have been married for about 11 years. At that point, he almost immediately exited the bottom floor WITHOUT EVEN GOING INTO THE BASEMENT. He came up to the floor where we (the owners) live, and without looking at any of the other floors, proceeded to imply that our house is about to fall down and we should immediately start looking for a new place to live. He said it would be cost-prohibitive to repair the home, but when he gave us a ballpark figure (which it was like pulling teeth to get him to give), it was an amount many people could afford. We had to talk him into going to the other floors to complete the inspection, for which he still charged us full price, despite maybe 15 min of actual work. He never took any notes or measured anything. As he ran my credit card, he asked if we subscribed to the "family sacrificial plan" which turned out to be an extremist Christian philosophy (try Googling "sacrificial love"). We asked him to stop, which he did, and he left soon after. We found his behavior extremely unprofessional. Since we found it hard to believe that this minimal once-over is what an engineering assessment should consist of, we hired a different engineer for a second opinion. This engineer completed a THOROUGH assessment, starting in the basement, and recognized many issues but nothing that would cause us to move out immediately. This confirmed our suspicion that Greg was utterly unprofessional. His "services" were a huge waste of money and we not only didn't receive what we paid for, but we were approached with an unwelcome religious agenda.
Response by Area Engineering, Inc.: Interestingly, the person writing this review was not present during most of the assessment, although she infers otherwise. When someone is offended, words are misconstrued, falsified, or taken out of context to create great damage. As the gospel message in the other review below caused an offense, it has also offended this person, who in hearing one sentence about a Father who sacrifices His own Son out of love for us, His fallen children, couldn't hear any more. Yet, this is a gracious message- 'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life- John 3:16' This message implores us to change our lifestyle for Him and turn from our sin. This is our response to the above claims: - Inspections typically take one hour but can last up to three hours depending on the number of concerns and questions a customer has. - We start inspections by addressing the customer's concerns. We do not arbitrarily look for structural problems unless requested, for good reason. It is not difficult to find additional structural problems. - When asked about the danger of buildings of this type I explained, 'this area is full of buildings that are laterally unstable under earth motion.' This 3-story standalone building, in particular, shows evidence of earth motion and side sway deformation throughout its narrow width, tall height, and long length. These can be easily observed without measuring tools. These are not good signs and sure signs of lateral instability. I would not want my family in this home or area with homes of this construction during earth motion. However, if unavoidable, living in the middle unit of a block of row houses would be preferred. And, I have no problem with 'Mount Vernon.' - The bottom unit had a lot of shrinkage cracks in the wood wall paneling due to the dry winter air environment, unrelated to the building movement. This is not a structural concern. I did not brush this off but provided a comforting response concerning simply an aesthetic issue. - If the men were gay, regardless I believe God loves them, enough to die for them. My hope is that they would accept the gift of God and turn and repent of their lifestyle of sin and follow God. I love them whether they change or not. For all are sinful and fall short of the glory of God- Romans 3:23, Romans 1. - The lateral deformation in all floors was visible from the ground outside previously. A discussion of this concern and many others took place on the upper floors. Other structural concerns included floor deformations due to sagging floor headers throughout the building at the stair locations and at bay window extensions and past repairs covering structural deficiencies inside the front wall. I would be willing to walk through the inspection with another colleague in the profession. - It has been a while, but if I remember correctly, I gave them an order of magnitude figure of ~200
