Asphalt Paving Repair or Patch
John was hired to Chip Seal my existing paved driveway because this was a less expensive option over re-paving. He and his crew were scheduled to arrive around 0800-0900 on Friday, the 10th of August but due to mechanical breakdowns did not show up until after 1100. John stated that they would have to work into Saturday to complete the job which was understandable and acceptable. The work (verbal) agreement was to apply an initial layer of oil on the driveway, add one layer of chip rock followed by rolling and grading as needed for a smooth surface and then followed by a second application of the same. This work that was to run through Saturday was completed finished with workers off my property by 6:00 pm. We noticed areas with heavy amounts of chip rock and other areas with less. John said it would even out after driving on it for several weeks. He's the "Expert" so we didn't question him. We paid John and asked when he would return to apply the final "fog seal" over the driveway at which he stated that would be another $2,400.00 dollars. This was actually part of the agreement for the $10,000.00 but John stated there was a communication issue. NOT! He told me and my wife at two separate times and two separate locations that the fog seal was part of the agreement. I had another estimate at $10,700.00 for the same work so why would I agree to pay John another $2,400.00? In future conversations about the seal coating my wife agreed to pay 1/2 ($1,200.00) and John agreed but I refused. John therefore did indeed agree to fog seal at no additional cost. This is where everything went down hill fast. Before the fog sealing was done and I was exiting my truck to retrieve my mail, I slipped on the loose gravel when getting out of my truck. I noticed that there was absolutely NO OIL under the chip rock. After sweeping about an 8' area and finding no oil under the chips I contacted John and requested he come out and look at it. When John came out and looked at it he agreed there was a problem and said they would correct it by removing all the loose chips and oiling where there was none. John and his crew returned on Thursday the 20th of September (we were loading the motor home and leaving town...again) when they showed up. After blaming the previous problems on his crew John ensured me he would stay on the job to oversee and ensure everything was done properly. When we returned home on Sunday we were completely shocked at how horrible our driveway was. It was obvious that they once again rushed the job and departed as soon as possible. Our (once smooth paved driveway) was now like driving on a tarred badly wash boarded county gravel road. I contacted John and asked him to come look at my driveway and explain why it was so bad. He came out and agreed that it was in bad shape and again blamed it on his crew. John initially stated that he would remain on the job until completion so I questioned him as to why it was his crews f

Asphalt Paving Installation
I hired this contractor to pave my driveway on 9-14-17. This provider had good reviews and I trusted him to do a good job. Bad move on my part. In my initial conversation with John (or perhaps Jim), the owner/boss of JG Asphalt Maintenance, I explained a few particulars about the paving job that had to be respected: First, his equipment and trucks could not damage the roadway in any way. This was due to the streets in the neighborhood being relatively freshly paved and the HOA would freak-out over nay damage - likely suing me for the repair costs. He stated he understood and would cause no damage. In reality, the JG Maintenance trucks and trailers pulled chunks of asphalt out of the roadway, leaked copious amounts of oil and transmission fluid in front of my neighbors' and my house and left deep, long gouges in several parts of the roadway. My neighbor was quite unhappy and approached one of the JG crew members and asked about the clean-up. The crew member assured my neighbor everything would be cleaned up before they left. That never happened. Now, I'm taking shots from neighbors and the HOA about the damages. JG no longer returns my calls. Secondly, in that initial conversation with John/Jim, I explained the joint between his asphalt work and the existing street needed to be clean and straight. Again, the HOA leaders have an established record of being hyper-attentive to this issue, largely due to its impact on snow removal. John stated the joint would be straight and look very clean. As you can likely predict, the joint is a mess. It's irregularly and only sporadically joined with the road and its hills and valleys will certainly create problems for the snow plow. And yes, the HOA is bent about this, too. Their threatening letter is coming and it will be a real PITA to resolve when JG refuses to even call me back. Lastly, since the concrete portion of my driveway had just been resurfaced and sealed, I asked John to pay particular attention to not staining it with oil and asphalt. John assured me the driveway would look the same as it did currently (without any stains) when they were finished with the job. The short version: smears of oil, oily boot prints and asphalt chips now adorn my formerly new-looking driveway. I called JG after I inspected the job on the same day it was completed. He claimed to be "mortified" at his crew's sloppiness and stated he would personally see that all the issues were fully addressed. After not hearing from him for several days, I have called twice and left messages about getting the repairs scheduled. I'm now 14 days past the job date and John no longer takes my calls nor returns my messages. So what I'm left with is a asphalt contractor that refuses to stand behind his work, an HOA threatening to sue me for damages caused by my contractor and a sub-par driveway that I will just have to learn to live with until I can save enough money to have it done properly. I recommend
Response from Asphalt Contractors
"Brain, I?ve been down to your place twice in the last week the HOA has changed the code on your gate and we couldn?t get in the first time the second time I waited until someone came and opened the gate and followed the in all long not being able to reach you on the phone nor are you listed on the directory call box. I left you a note saying we had came by. We cleaned up the road. But as for your driveway we could not find any of the problems you speak of. When we finished you and I did a walk through and you had no complaints at the Time. We would like to make you happy I?m just not sure what that would take or if it?s even possible. T"
