Asphalt Shingle Roofing Installation and Replacement
As it seems no one has left a review for A to Z since 2020, I felt compelled to share my experience from 2023, post Hurricane Ian in SWFL. After reading these reviews that are in contrast to my experience, it sounds as if they were written by family members or friends. We hired A to Z in March of 2023 to replace our roof after it was damaged in September of 2022. We were told it would be completed within 6-8 weeks. We gave 1/3 deposit upon signing the contract. As a fellow FL contracting company (were in the aluminum industry) we are well aware of permitting procedures, job timelines, material lead times, etc. We waited weeks for our permit to be applied for and had to remind the contractor about the need for an NOC. He finally came to our office to pick up our NOC and told us that he was on his way downtown to file it with the county clerks office and would then take it to Lee County Building Department. I checked the status of the NOC the next day because I knew when it came time to call in the inspection it would t be able to be inspected without the NOC. We tried to contact the contractor to see what was happening with our job and why the NOC had not yet been filed with either of the necessary departments. A couple of weeks later the roofers show up to strip the roof and lay the tar paper for the dry in inspection. That same day the owner of A to Z Roofing showed up after the roof was finished asking for his next draw, another 1/3 of the contract price. He said he needed that in order to get the shingles delivered. We understood and paid him, expecting the inspection to be done asap and shingles to be delivered the next week. At the end of April, we got a reply when we asked the status stating that the shingles have been delayed until the following week. Little did we know, that would be our last communication with A to Z Roofing until August when I hunted him down by a different phone number. At the end of April, we also asked about the inspection (knowing he could not schedule it without the NOC) and we were told that the county was weeks behind on inspections. Being a fellow contractor in the area, we knew that was a lie. Being nervous, we decided to record the NOC ourselves and file it with Lee County in order to call in our inspection. It passed the dry in inspection on June 6th. That was almost two months after the dry in had been done. Continued calling and texting from my husbands number without any success in reaching Matt Hoosier. I finally decided to call from my cellphone and he answered. He made excuses and said he would be there next week. That was the last time I spoke to him on that number. I googled his name and business to find another number for a Panama City number and decided to call that. He answered and still had more excuses. By now, its the beginning of August. I called him one more time and he claimed that he was waiting for a check to clear the bank and then he would be ordering our shingles. He also tried to say that our job was way undersold and that he was losing money by completing our job but he convinced us that he was dedicated to finishing it. Since then, no text replies, no answered phone calls and no shingles. My husband and I had to go down to the county last week to file a complaint and take over the permit. We also learned that his liability insurance expired June 13th and he has 5 other permits in our area without any work done. We have since ordered our own shingles and hired someone to do the job. That was all done in 5 days. Terrible! It was a terrible experience. As a fellow contractor this makes me sick! We will be pursuing legal action. Save yourself and stay far away from this crook! Be aware that he has several offices and phone number, not just in Florida but in Missouri as well. Matthew Hoosier, Matt Hoosier, Matt Duk Soo Hoosier, whatever he goes by hes a liar and a thief!
