Review by Kenneth L. in Davisburg, MI
I called Best Choice Total Home Improvement two years ago for a free estimate on a new roof. The salesman and I talked about different options and I remember deciding on getting the ridge vent. I called back a year later to accept the proposal, but the proposal was never updated to reflect my interest in the ridge vent. I made it clear when I called that I wanted a ridge vent and not 14 can vents. The only change made to the proposal sheet that their salesman gave me two years ago was the date, some extra siding work and the amount. I never received any other paperwork that stated what they were or were not going to do. The project was scheduled during a thunderstorm, so the crew rushed and shingled over holes they somehow put in my sheathing. They ripped the leaf guard off my gutters for some reason, destroying some of them as they tossed them to the ground while they were ripping the old shingles off. They ran their gas-powered air compressor on top of my brand new paver sidewalk which dripped oil all over it. They damaged my gutter by dropping their garbage cans on top of it while dumping their trash in the dumpster that was in front of my garage door. They intentionally pried the plywood off the fascia board and stuffed a piece of drip edge under the shingles to create a vent into the attic above my garage because they knew there were no vents in the soffits. This created a noticeable bump on the roof and a water leak in my garage which I called to have investigated. They first sent out their siding contractor to fix it by pounding on the bump with a hammer for about an hour. They finally sent the "roofer" back out who ripped the shingles back to expose the lifted plywood. I took a picture of it and was told it was repaired by tearing off a couple of layers of the plywood to help level out the bump. I took a picture from inside the attic to show the daylight shining through the gap they created before the "roofer" tried nailing the plywood back down. They altered my roof by cutting in a ridge vent and blocked off the gabel vents at both ends of the house without adding any soffit vents. The soffits around my garage never had vents cut into them, so my attic became soaking wet and full of mold after 5 months of being without proper ventilation. I contacted the owners of the company who told me the problem was due to me heating my garage, despite the fact that it is drywalled and insulated, rather than the fact that they failed to provide any ventilation into my attic. After proving to Best Choice Total Home Improvement that there was never any vents cut into my soffits, they began telling me that cutting out soffit vents was not their job. According to the manufacturer of the shingles they used on my house, they were supposed to properly install the shingles, which includes ensuring a balanced airflow in the attic. Best Choice Total Home Improvement failed to do this and refused to correct it. I had t
Response by Best Choice Total Home Improvement, Inc.: I wanted to respond to this review so that the public knows both sides of the story and that we never ran nor avoided this customer. When I verified the exhaust on the contract being can vents he demanded the installation of a ridge vent. I let him know that the contract signed by him stated can vents and went over the things that are required with a ridge vent. He verified that he had the overhangs I described being needed and let me know he had hired a company to install new continuously vented soffit and told me he had plenty of intake. I explained to the customer that if more ventilation would be needed the only way to provide more would be to completely remove the gutter, fascia and the soffit he had paid another company to install and would be a charge over and above the contract price. I agreed to changing to the ridge vent and told him that we would have to close off his gable vent with the installation of the ridge vent. During his roof installation a section of gutter above the garage was damaged during tear off and the air compressor did leak a small amount of oil onto his brick pavers. When this was discovered we held back 500.00 from the final bill and had the entire section of gutter replaced within two days and the customer had his original brick paver contractor replace the affected pavers and was compensated the cost from the 500 held back. January 6th the customer contacted us stating he had a condensation issue in his garage attic. I personally visited his home the following morning to inspect the problem. That was when I discovered that the garage was being used as a growing facility and was heated to roughly 74 degrees and had high levels of moisture. I told him that the current condition of the garage and insulation was in no way fit for this use regardless of the ventilation. I offered that day to baffle the garage attic space and treat it for free. Then the conversation came up of whether or not the original company he hired to do his continuous vented soffit had actually cut in additional venting and who is responsible for that if they in fact did not. I did let the homeowner know that was the reason I disclosed that with him before starting the job and to add additional venting in the overhangs you would have to remove the gutters, fascia trim and take down the vinyl to cut in more venting. It is not something you can do from the attic without damaging the soffit material. I also told him that we were in no way responsible to do that work for free. The homeowner contacted the building department and had the inspector out to his home to show him the issue and get his advice. The inspector passed the roof with no code violations and gave the recommendation of baffles and more insulation if your going to be heating your garage. The allegation that we spoke to the building inspector beforehand and bribed a city official is false and very insulting to both myself and the inspector. He then hired a home inspector to review the

Have not gotten the roof done yet, waiting on refinacing for funds. Devon has been helpful in so many different areas(ex. I have new front porch steps w/railing). He has kept in touch without being pushy.

Excellent customer service. The roof looks great - even my neighbors say so! They even took care of a bee or wasp nest. They willingly double checked points of concern noted during the inspection while closing on the home. They showed up when they said they would and finished when they said they would. I plan to hire them for additional insulation and a possible future exterior facelift.
