"Just so every one has an understanding of what this job was and why he is upset. There is a small set of steps inside of two old brick columns. The original steps were only 1' wide. I had advised homeowner that if I took the steps out that I could not put them back in because they will not be grandfathered in. Code is 3' platform. He was concerned about how it would look inside his columns. Homeowner designed the steps the way he wanted them against advisement. Homeowner was also told that heights would be different because the distance from bottom step to existing walk would be shorter so a steeper angle from stoop to walk. He didn't show up when concrete was on the way. He and his wife were both home the entire time I was there. The set up was approved by him. The angle was approved by him. This was a very small job. Would have took me ten minutes to change it if desired. As far as the post holes go, he is right they were part of the estimate. However, during construction existing footings were discovered which nullified the need for post holes. The step would actually sit on a footing instead of the post holes. Much better if you ask me. There was no expansion joint placed on his steps unlike his neighbors because the step can't move. If the concrete can't move there is no need for expansion. No movement = no expansion. Everything was inspected before and after finish. He was very pleased. 2 or 3 weeks later I get a call from him saying he thinks the angle from the step to the walk is too severe. I explained to him that that was discussed before and after set up before and after concrete was poured and he was ok with everything. Now he wasn't. He wanted me to remove the step that he designed against advisement and replace it. Even after everything that he was advised against and going with his design, I was still willing to work with him. What he didn't realize is that I have other customers to take care of besides him. I did not have time to call him back the next day. The day after that, so 2 days after we had talked and I told him I would take care of him, he managed to leave me 7 voicemails. I never talked to him again. He can say what he wants. The only reason he redid the step is because of the angle from the bottom of the step to the existing walk. That's it. Oh, and the brilliant inspector must not have noticed the footings on the bottom of the step. Steps can't heave and crack when they're on a frost footing! I usually don't respond to things like this, I know I can't please everyone 100% of the time. But this is far and away over the line on his part and just plain not true."
