I thoroughly disagree with all the good reviews here. I hired Canaan Land & Tile (CLT) on April 22 for a fairly simple fence project along one side of my house. Every aspect of the job was poor, from basic communications to final installation, was very poor. Their fence not only did not match their statement of work (SOW), but the quality was so bad my neighbors thought I had put it up myself. I wish I could post photos here to show the full extent of the problems. The SOW was simple- The new fence is to as closely as possible match the existing fence on the right side of the house. I was concerned this was too loose, but their estimator assured me this was sufficient for their team. Concerningly, the CLT installation team never even looked at the existing fence until we stopped their work on the first day and forced them to look. CLT had chosen low-grade wood for this work which was inappropriate for the design of the fence. There were a great many warped planks, cracked boards, large knot holes, and very uneven spacing and leveling throughout. The fence gate was a completely different design from what we agreed on. They used nails instead of screws that we had specifically requested to match the existing fence. They refused to construct other aspects of the existing fence, such as a small trellis above the gate, even though those were part of the original fence that must be duplicated. The edge fence post connected to the house was not secured properly, such that it just fell off when I leaned on it. We paid for them to stain the fence, but CLT never returned to complete the job. Over the following month, I tried to engage CLT to fix the defects, but CLT refused to respond. Only when I threatened to sue did the CLT owner come on-site to inspect. He agreed the workmanship was inferior. But rather than fix the defects, he said he would return all money and walk away. I accepted that, and the paperwork was to be dropped off the following day. I have not heard from CLT since. I have lost track of how many times I tried to contact them, and at this point, I have to assume they intend to keep the money and never respond. On Oct, 22, I contacted the OR Contractor Construction Board to mediate a resolution. On their direction, I sent a mediation request via certified mail to both the CLT address on file with the state and the address listed in the SOW. Both certified letters were refused and eventually returned to me. Last week I noticed the CLT website has disappeared, and the domain no longer has an owner, which is highly suspicious. Per CCB, the next steps are that I must sue them, and if they still do not respond, then I can finally file a claim against their bond. On top of this, CLT left a complete mess of the job site. They left a 150 square feet pile of debris sitting in the middle of our driveway, blocking access to the garage, for over 2 weeks. There were broken boards with nails and other hazardous things which I feared would harm somebodys pet or child wandering onto our property. It took a week of daily pestering calls to cajole them to clean up their mess. After they were gone, we still had to pick up a lot of debris left strewn about the yard, and it took us several days to clean off the accumulation of dirt and cement dust they left across our long driveway. The entire experience has been infuriating, disrespectful, expensive, time-consuming, and thoroughly unprofessional. I fully stand behind every word in this review, with photos and eyewitnesses to back it up. My complaints are on file with the CCB, and I will soon be filing legal action. Surely I cannot be the only client that CLT has treated this way. I find it shameful that Angis and HomeAdvisor give such high reviews to such a company. It makes me cast doubt on every other contractor review on their site.
