Metal Stairs and Railings Installation and Replacement
$1,800
After sending him a message requesting our money back after breaching our contract and trust, Clayton responded with profanity and threatened us with a hailstorm of lawyers if we left a bad review as well as threatened us with a felony for a bounced check that we made a good faith effort to fix as soon as our bank notified us (he cashed the new $1,800 check days after the initial issue). My responses to him were always levelheaded and professional that was not reciprocated from Claywood Construction. We hired Claywood Construction to fabricate a code compliant spiral staircase and railing for our loft. It was supposed to be finished Nov. 17th. They finally showed up onsite Dec. 3rd. Here are some of the issues we had, all of which I have documents, messages, photos, and video surveillance to backup it all up. -8 documented delays. Said he was prefabricating pieces multiple times. We asked for progress pictures/videos on two separate occasions and received nothing. -We asked for shop drawings to see how he was going to install it. Clayton sent me google images of staircases instead. If I had shop drawings I would have found out early on that what Claywood had in mind was not code compliant. - Clayton bought a square center post for the stair when I told him twice we clearly wanted a round post (using a square post would of made it difficult to install treads and treads would not be identical as code demands). -I noticed the tread depths were not code compliant and I called him out on it. He got upset and told me he was making it how I wanted it and thats when he decided to angrily quit. From the beginning I requested a code compliant Spiral Staircase, I do not control his means and methods he should have known all that was required to install a code compliant spiral staircase, thats why we initially hired him. - He told us he worked 22 man hours plus 4 hours standard mobilization time. Our contract never included a (standard mobilization time) and our home surveillance showed his team working a total of 10.5 hrs between all workers. No prefab work was done since he told us we had all material on site making me believe he did not work off site. - We now have metal specks engrained on our window from when they grinded/cut the treads onsite, I had hand cleaned windows a week before and did not have these. -We tried to take Clayton to small claims and had a process serving company and Arapahoe sheriff department attempt to serve him 9 times. Process Company said someone was inside the residence hushing the dogs and refusing to answer the door which had a piece of mail addressed to Clayton. We are out more than $2,500+ from the down payment we paid Claywood Construction, small claims fees, and interest from new loan we had to take out to get stairs installed from a reputable contractor. I really wish I would have followed my gut instincts and not followed through with Claywood Construction. In the end I do believe we were better off not having the project completed by Clayton as I am nervous on how it would have turned out. If you do decide to work with them make sure you are covering all your bases and protecting yourself.

Concrete Flatwork - Repair & Resurface
$6,000
I paid extra to get the 8-inch thick driveway as well as an expanded walk to front door and was supposed to get a patio pad in back. In short, now that I have paid, the driveway is wavy when you walk on it, and the other work did not get completed because he used more concrete on the driveway/walk than he expected. Too many issues to really go over here, but my biggest concern is his angry reactions when I tried to make sure he understood what I wanted. Do not trust this guy, and his work is marginal at best.
Response from 541ironworks
"The homeowner's son drove on the driveway. We matched the tire tracks to his son's care and wanted us to replace and fix the work after we had told him not to even walk on the slab for 7 days. The homeowner wanted to micromanage the whole project to the point of calling me at 9 pm on a Sunday. Every point in the project he wanted to add extra work and not pay for it."

I chose to go with Claywood Construction due to price and availability. Although the weather was not agreeable and we could not get the job completed as quickly as expected, Clay was very responsive and kept me posted on timing and logistics. I appreciated this. Post-job, I asked Clay to return to the job site to clean up what was left behind and he did so promptly.

Clay and Forest were great. We asked them to complete a job very quickly and they got the job done faster than any other company could commit to. And for a very fair price. They were flexible with our schedules and kept in good contact with us throughout the whole process. Forest also worked directly with our Architectural Engineer which was very helpful.

Two guys showed up without tools. No experience in construction. If i had not had the proper tools- what would they have done to do the job? We had to replace several Trex boards that they damaged. Had to redo a section that they started in the wrong direction. They used a colored caulking to fill the screw holes when they missed the joists. Did not match the Trex boards. Robert was very rude and got in my face about how i wanted the Facia boards corners done. 45° angles. Which they didn't do. Robert told me i was a liar. I paid $1500 for this job. My first estimate from them was $12,000.00. I had all the materials. We finally agreed to pay each "worker" $30 per hour. One did all the work and the second person watched and did no work. I asked Robert why he was not working. He said he was the project manager. REALLY?
Response from 541ironworks
"Client was very hard to work with. We had set the project up to work for time and materials due to the ability to not construct the deck. The project was running smoothly until all the structural work was done to the point himself and some could finish the project. Workers were yelled at and treated poorly."

In Spring weather plays a big part in how quickly the job proceeds. The weather was great when we got the estimate and for two weeks after, but once work started the weather caused many delays and rescheduling before it was completed. Once you give the 20% down it can take awhile before work actually starts! Keep track of what your contractor says from the time you hear the estimate until the work is done. We had to cross part of the job off because we were told that it would cost more than the estimate. The work that was done turned out OK. It was a two day job that involved some cement and the two weeks after we gave them the start up check were perfect weather wise. However, it snowed on the day they planned to start our job and it was pretty "iffy" once the cement was poured, dried - and the frame work and door were installed. Having the job start and stall was frustrating and not being able to get it all done (left off rod iron hand railing) was disappointing. We should have waited until summer.

Very pleased with all aspects of Clayton's and Woody's work. They responded to any queries made and kept us apprised of any necessary changes due to weather and were likewise flexible in schedule changes that were unavoidable. They cleaned the property after finishing and left everything in great shape. Very professional, excellent workmanship and great customer service. We will happily refer them to our friends and neighbors with confidence and we will keep them in mind for any future projects we need completed! Quite satisfied!

Clayton and Woody are both great to work with! Their initial follow up was fast and they were responsive throughout the entire process. The project was to install a metal railing around our patio. They were able to get it done on time and under budget. I highly recommend Claywood Construction and plan on hiring them again for future work.
