Wood Fence - Install
$4,333
Fence installation is incomplete. Contractor could not cover the cost of supplies. Fence was not installed as quoted or in the time frame contracted. Debris was not hauled from my front lawn as contracted. Damage was done to neighboring properties and was not addressed. Workers did not show as contracted. When they were here they did minimal work. I cannot recommend this contractor. He over extended himself, is inexperienced and unreliable. I thought I had done my due diligence by getting three quotes and following up to make sure he was licensed. That was not enough. I paid 1/2 of the cost up front and on day 3 the contractor called to say he could not afford to buy the rest of the wood. I paid a vendor directly for the lumber in hopes to have the job finished in a timely manner. I have $4333.04 invested in an unfinished fence. I paid another contractor $495 to get the huge pile of debris from my front lawn on the fifth day. Cutting Edge was supposed to remove the debris, but did not. The debris was unsightly, killing the grass in my front yard and hazardous for people walking due to nails protruding from the wood. Update: Day 8 the owner took over the job. The pickets on ¼ of the fence were installed blatantly crooked. It appears he did not attempt to use a level line. The front panel was installed with the rails facing out which is not what we agreed upon per the picture I emailed him before the project began. I received an original quote from Cutting Edge and asked them to meet me a second time to make adjustments to the plan which raised my original quote $400. They ignored all of my requests that I paid for. Today, when I asked about installing the fence with three rails instead of two the owner told me he did not have the lumber. Again, I cannot recommend Cutting Edge Landscaping Contractors for fencing.

Wood Fence - Install

From Day 1, I was not happy. They came promptly to get my deposit, but on the day the work was to begin they did not show up (no call, no email). I had to email and ask where they were and was told they would start the next day. Day 2 one person came to take down part of my existing chain-link and did not return that day to set posts, as we were told he would. Now we have 5 dogs and no way to keep them in. We thought we would just have to make it like that for one night, but... Day 3, no show, no call. Day 4, I reached out and was told that they could not work on it because rain was expected. (they could have left me with a workable fence in the meantime. They could have CALLED to tell me they were not coming). I was ready to cancel the project by Day 4 but DH convinced me to stick with it. That was Saturday. Day 6, I cannot stay home waiting on them another day, I have to go to work- I emailed about my frustrations and gave instructions to not ring the doorbell when they arrive as DH was on 3rd shift starting that day and needed to sleep keep in mind they should have been finished by now, but they could help themselves to the backyard. I get a notice on my phone at lunch, they are ringing the bell, and the crew has no guidance, no specs on what I want done in the yard. The project manager reportedly (Justin) did not give them any kind of instructions. I had to get on the phone and explain the whole thing over the phone (facetime) while at work. Day 6 I am annoyed but relieved to see the fence started. Day 7, the crew is great; they are polite, hard workers, putting up quality work. At the end of the day I am starting to chill out and am prepared to pay the next installment but get an email (not a call) saying they did not account for enough wood in the estimate and I need to pay $825 more for labor and material! After all these delays and his refusal to measure when he came for the estimate (he said *I do this all the time, I do not need to measure*)! I am IRATE but trying to be understanding. Also, I want them to FINISH IT. By Day 8, they finish all but one plank in the front by the gate and the hardware. Here is where it gets really fun. I pay the extra money and the full balance. It took several days- I lost track- to get the final plank in place, so I still had a dog-sized hole in the fence. They finally put hardware on, but it does not make sense for our fence... it is an auto latch type, and we get locked out of the fence if it closes, so they rigged up a STRING and promised to come back with new hardware. That was last week, and we are still opening the gate with a string hooked to the other side. I have no hopes of them returning. I will say that one gate is already starting to sag, so I may have to call for that, but I am so *done* with the lack of communication, I do not even want to see them here anymore. Also, I was told that they would add some extra boards to the front of the fence to give it a more finished look if they had enough wood. Remember that extra $825 I paid for... I watched them load up a truck and drive off with a truck bed full of good wood (they had some that was bad, this was not bad) but that gate was not filled in as expected. Something else irritating - the project manager did not talk to me about money or timeline or any of my concerns. He did not collect the money from me, even though he was here one afternoon. He always sent someone else in his place. In summary, I feel disrespected, and slightly cheated. I would hire this crew on the side, but I would not go thru this company. If timeliness, cost, or communication is important to you, I would stay away.

Felt estimate was high $600, but elected to go ahead. Job completed was excellent by two workers. Took them two and one half hours with two wheelbarrows. Great job. Asked to have further estimate on them planting grass in the three new beds. Never received a call back, so did it myself.

Serious drainage issues needed correction. All downspouts were connected to buried 6 inch PVC pipe which was installed and routed to the back of the property. A drain was installed in front of the steps and steps were rebuilt on newly installed footing. Sump pump in crawl space had been incorrectly installed previously and this was corrected. Drain pipe was installed around inside perimeter of crawl space and connected to sump pump which was routed into the outside drainage system described above. This was a big job. They arrived on time every day until work was completed. I would rate the work at 4 out of possible 5 stars due to the fact that some mistakes were made but all were corrected. Pricing was reasonable and I would hire them again for this work.

The crew graded several sections of the front yard, a passage between the house and garage, and implanted two types of drains to divert a stream of water running from the driveway and down a line of shrubbery in front of the house. They did a marvelous job and solved the problem!

3 guys and a pick up truck might be good for a move, but not bring down and removing large trees.
