The contractor reached out from Angies List for the popcorn ceiling removal and quoted me a price. I didnt respond immediately because I didnt know if I wanted to use someone for the project. He then followed up and asked if we wanted to move forward. I responded no because it wouldve been too expensive and out of our budget to remove it and redo the ceilings. He then said he could do the job, including the popcorn ceiling removal, patching holes and scrapes, and flat finish and paint for under $3000. He then sent me a quote for $2650, and we would buy the paint, which we did. I told him we had a timeline in place due to moving into the house on July 17th, hiring a cleaning company to clean the house on July 16th, and we would have a painter there starting Monday, July 13th, to paint the house, and he would have to work with the painter to get the job done. He said that he was going to start on Saturday, July 11th, 2026, which he said he planned to complete the removal on Saturday, patch and repair on Sunday, and start painting alongside the painter on Monday. We paid him $1000 via Zelle, which he requested to pay for painting materials and a deposit to start the job. I signed his DocuSign stating the full cost of everything being done was $2650. Saturday, he prepped by taping plastic wrap on the walls (which ruined the paint and drywall on our existing walls). He then came back Sunday morning and spent the whole day and was only able to take off the popcorn ceiling in 4 bedrooms, which he previously stated: it would only take him 6 hours to remove all the popcorn in the entire house. Then he came in on Monday with his 16-year-old son and patched the holes and put caulking on the walls. The compound mud was so thick that it was falling off the ceiling and cracking. The caulking was so messy that it was all over the walls, including fingerprint marks on the walls from caulking. He texted us and told us he would be done sanding by Monday night. he already told us he would be done sanding and painting Monday morning, so Monday had already gone by, and he didnt even start sanding by Tuesday morning. My husband pulled up to the house at 8 pm and was just pulling in, and the contractor said he was planning to sand and never did. When our painter arrived on Tuesday morning, he said Brett wasnt there yet, and when we attempted to reach out, it went straight to voicemail, and he didnt show up the entire day to do any work. At this point, our painter couldnt work due to all the plastic wrap, and Brett is nowhere to be found. He then told me on Wednesday morning he didnt want to finish the job due to it wasnt a good fit, due to the painter being at the house, even though he was aware of that upon our agreement. When I asked him if he could at least come down sand down the very thick mud on the ceiling and clean the popcorn ceiling, Dubree said he would for $700. I agreed, and when he got to the house, the painter said to him, I heard your walking off the job. Brett then had a verbal altercation and yelled at the painter, and then the painter texted me and said we needed to get someone there asap. When I told Brett my dad and I would be coming to the house to talk, he left the property and drove up to my front gate. We met him there and asked him if he would return and clean up the mess he made, and he proceeded to get into a verbal altercation with my dad, saying that he was flapping his gums and not to talk to him, and getting in my face, screaming and cursing. At that point, he STILL requested the $700, which I told him he would not be getting due to the condition that he was leaving my house. He then left and said, I fired him, after he drove off and said he refused to come back to the house. I then went to meet my husband at his job, and Brett had arrived at my husband's job as well and stood at the front of the store waiting for him for over 30 minutes. He then texted me and left me voice messages saying that he would be coming after me legally for not giving him his $700.
