About us

Firehouse Home Inspection is the premier home inspection company in the South Central Kansas area. We have been trusted by home buyers to help them make informed buying decisions since 2004. T he founder of our company, Don Scott, is an AHIT Certified Home Inspector. Our inspection reports conform to and exceed the ASHI Standards of Practice. Don is now an associate member of NAHI and most recently a member of IESO.Don is now a Certified Residential Mold Inspector. Don is also a member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. A home inspection is a professional, objective, visual examination of the condition of a home. Home buyers now entering the marketplace view inspections as a way to gain valuable information about the biggest purchase of their lifetime. It helps them to determine whether there are any major defects or system inadequacies at the time of purchase. In most cases, home inspections are performed after a sales contract, conditional upon a satisfactory home inspection, has been accepted by the seller. The inspection can usually be arranged immediately to within a few days. The home buyer is typically encouraged to attend the inspection, so that he/she can see first hand the workings of the home. It also represents an excellent opportunity for the prospective buyer to ask questions about the home or to discuss potential changes. Home inspections should also highlight the positive aspects of a home. In fact, many of the home inspector's observations or recommendations help to dispel home purchaser anxieties, and provide useful repair suggestions. The home inspector's service to the purchaser is primarily one of education. The goal of the inspector is to provide the purchaser with a better understanding of the physical condition of the home in order that they can make a well-informed decision. It is also the inspector's role to keep his findings in perspective for the buyer. After the inspection is completed, a written report should be prepared for the home buyer, documenting the results of the inspection, along with an estimation of repair time frames and costs. The home inspection should not be confused with an appraisal, a municipal code inspection, an environmental audit, or a home owner's warranty. A complete home inspection should cover all of the major systems of a house, including structure, exterior, roofing, electrical, heating, cooling, insulation, plumbing and interior. As a minimum, an inspection should meet the Standards of Practice of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). Consumers should be very careful when shopping for a home inspector. The industry on the whole is unregulated and many unqualified people offer home inspection services. Home inspection companies that offer to do repair work, or recommend repair companies, should be avoided.

Complete Home Inspection
I was going through a divorce in July of 2024 and paid the $700 inspection fee, because I wanted a functioning, worry-free home. The first thing my daughter and I noticed was that many of the electical outlets in the house didn't work. When I contacted Don Scott at Firehouse Inspections, he explained that his inspection was really just a walk-through, and that he didn't even test the outlets. He was eventually persuaded to pay an electrician to come and fix the outlets. Then, when the cold snap hit a couple of weeks ago, I tried my furnace for the first time and noticed that it didn't work, either. A repairman came out and gave me an estimate of $1400 to fix a heater that passed inspection 3 months ago! The repairman explained that the heat exchanger was rusted out, with a hole in the tube, and that is would pose a carbon monoxide hazard if the heat were turned on. When I contacted Firehouse Inspections to ask that Mr. Scott pay for the repairs, he again told me "Look, what we do is visual and non-invasive. . . " even though his website claims that he inspects homes "to provide an effective and informative service . . . and help clients make a sound decision on their new home.. . . The Standard of Practice covers he following areas: . . . electrical systems, structural systems, . . heating systems, etc." I was certainly not "helped to make a sound decision"; I shelled out $700 for a guy to walk through my house without giving a $#@ if anything worked or not. I definitely do not recommend this service. I think that the people giving it 5 stars perhaps did not have anything seriously wrong with their houses to catch. If you are really determined to waste your money, though, I'm happy to come do a "visual inspection" of your house!! I'll probably catch as much as Firehouse Inspections did!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Had an inspection in August. I should have known better than to allow this inspector to bring his young grandson with him to our inspection. It is obvious that he spent more time baby sitting than inspecting our home. Here is an incomplete list of things these "professionals missed" - Large leak in the main living area bathroom that was draining into the basement utility room from the shower neck not being installed properly - Large leak in the main living area bathroom due to a 1 ½ inch crack in the tub that was also draining into the utility room below - Tub surround installed incorrectly ------ Cost to fix both of the leak issues $400 and an ugly epoxy patched tub - Surround and tub will need replaced at a later date costing who knows how much - An entire room of 8 outlets in the basement that do not and have not worked, this is an ongoing issue we are still fighting and have not resolved, both licensed electricians (from different companies) say there is no way they could have worked for the inspection ------- Total cost thus far $450 for two different licensed electricians to come over and tell us they have no idea why they donâ t work but we can rip more walls down and open up the ceiling to get a better look which quite frankly I am tired of doing and paying for. No indication of heat pump being inspected anywhere in the inspection report despite having a heat pump in the home. Air handler referred to as â furnaceâ . You are supposed to be the buyer's eyes, their expert, their advocate. I feel like I was ripped off entirely, just a number and a payment in the bank to you. I'm sure we will continue to find things that you failed to see as the months go by, but what can I do??? Your reimbursement for the huge kitchen pipe leak will have to suffice. You will move on with your days inspecting other homes. I just hope you will start looking at them as you would want someone to inspect your own $240,000 investment. I am heartbroken to know that someone I hired to help and guide me clearly did not care enough to make sure the job was done right and that we would be satisfied customers.

They came on short notice to inspect the crawl space for dampness, found the problem, and suggested a solution. Very efficient. He sent the report via e-mail the same day. They were friendly, good appearance, carried proper I.D. and were knowledgeable about the problem. I felt I could trust what they were telling me. We definitely would use them again!

I needed an inspection done on short notice during a busy season; he responded promptly and agreed to make the drive to my city. He sent the report electronically the same day as the inspection, and provided a thorough inspection for a very reasonable price.

I had a very good experience with the Firehouse Home Inspector that came out to my house. He explained everything to me after he would check something, because if it was a problem, he wanted me to know immediately. I think he done a great job and I would definitely recommend him to a friend, neighbor, or family member. I would like to get some estimates of the mold damages, as well as water damages that he found in my home. Overall I really enjoyed his services.

Don called me quickly and came out as planned. They ran tests and gave me feedback. They then emailed me lab results as well as pics of everything. They sent a letter saying if I had questions to call. I will need to call either him or someone to actually explain the lab results although his letter clearly tells me I need a clean up

We met Don Scott for the first time during the inspection. He was very professional and checked everything thoroughly. There were a couple of items that were found and the majority of them will be addressed by the seller. We were extremely impressed with Firehouse Home Inspections.

Don was a wonderful choice. He inspected everything well and gave us a binder that clearly explained his findings before we left the property. He even collected the model numbers and serial numbers on everything that was staying with the house to help in the future should we need it. He also included photos of possible problems with the house for future reference. He also took the time to explain everything to us including his recommendations. Overall, we thought he did a wonderful and thorough job. I would definately recommend him to anyone.
