Five Star Construction

- I contacted Angi and found 5-Star Construction as top rated in my area. I contacted Bill Hicks and hired him to replace the boards on the large existing upper and lower decks. He made us go directly to our bank with him and take out $8050 to start the job, with another $8,050 upon completion. Bill and his brother did the work. The contract was signed on October 2, 2025 - We decided to replace the railings, $2100 and lastly, we asked them to replace the board fencing around the perimeter of the back yard with new gates and new concrete seated posts. Removal of all old materials included. $7,600 - They completed the job in 2-3 weeks and were very nice to work with, they were prompt and cordial. Sadly, they were not carpenters. - Boards quickly started warping, wood has knots even though I was told it was top-grade wood. When I asked Bill not to use the warped boards, he said "that is just wood and it will straighten out." It didn't, warped even more, and most of the top railing has bowed. None of boards on the railings are mitered and are poorly nailed, the top of the railing does not seat on the posts because the posts are too tall and were not cut down. The sides of the railings that used to be screwed into the brick of the house are not attached to the house and can be wiggled freely. - The work on the stairs is crude, there is a large saw cut into one long stair on the lower deck. The stairs do not have facing boards as I had asked for. The upper side of the rail where the spindles were attached is open so the cap boards do not have two sides to screw into and they are warping. - The gates are lopsided and the hardware doesn't work. - The side porch has a stair that tilts forward when you step out of the laundry room, the landing has a board that is too high and is a tripping hazard. The railing on this small porch is not level and is warping. - During the corse of the project we paid Bill in increments through Venmo. And once with Cash App that he insisted I download to pay him. No more communication until: -On November 3, 2025 I contacted Bill with pictures of my concerns and asked him to come out to remove the poor concrete job on the stairs. He said he would come out and remove them and refund me $200. I address the issues with the wood and the gates. I asked him to come out and he said he would come as soon as he is able. He didn't come. - April 17, 2026 I posted a negative review on Angi and he came back at me immediately with "Your review is a false statement and may be considered defamation. Please remove the review immediately or we will be forced to contact an attorney... so meantime, you're giving my company a bad reputation , which is affecting my livelihood. I will be out next week, but I would ask if you please remove the review today." I did. - He has not come out to work this out. - I have a family friend who has a reputable construction business, Hummingbird, who came out and gave me some advice. I asked Bill to come out and meet him with me to explain the complaints. He refuses and instead keeps threatening me with lawyers and telling me that my year warranty has expired which would not be until October 2, 2026 when the contract was signed, or around 2 weeks later when the work was completed.

Five star construction did an amazing job, very good work ethic and craftsmanship. Five star construction was on time and professional throughout the entire process. I would highly recommend using this company for your next project.
