We do not recommend hiring GM Masonry, LLC. Our experience has been very poor. It resulted in us agreeing to accept an invoice credit to end our working relationship and seek correction by a new landscaping company for the resulting property damage. We hired GMM to install a paver walkway in our front yard. On 5/8/19 we paid our deposit. They asked if dirt that was dug up could be dumped behind our tree line in the back yard and we agreed. We were never asked to confirm our property lines, provide a site map (though one was offered, and they stated it was unnecessary), or otherwise specify where dirt would be dumped. Luckily, I happened to be home and notice what was happening, but I was too late as their crew had already driven trucks into our neighbor s yard and dumped on their property, damaging their lawn. I ran outside to immediately stop to it. The resolve was to move the dirt back, add topsoil, and lay new grass seed. Earlier in the day, I would told the crew that I was home and available for questions if clarification was ever needed. When dumping material their trucks drove over our lawn quite a bit, causing brown/dead grass in the pattern of tire tracks. A large boulder (one of more than ten decorative boulders in a straight line marking the back-property line) was pushed into the woods and out of sight. GMM has said that, it was never specified that this rock was placed there intentionally. To address the lawn, they asked a hydroseeding company to assess our grass and propose next steps. According to GMM, that company suggested that no further action be taken as hydroseeding would cause the area to be more noticeable given that our entire lawn is crab grass and/or dead yellow grass. To move the boulder, GMM scheduled three dates with us. Though a crew arrived to work on our property the first date, they had no orders to move the rock. Early morning on the third scheduled date, as we awaited the crew s arrival, we received an email (and subsequent phone calls) urging instead that the boulder not be moved back at all. Reasons cited included the cost to GMM to do so (thousands) and the fact our lawn would be damaged further. They instead offered an invoice credit which we accepted to put an end to this project, almost three months since inception. Regarding the walkway, I inquired early about the pattern options available to us. On 7/8/19 we were given this information in an email from GMM with diagrams of the options. The document had many patterns for different pavers, so I called GMM for clarification. I was told that two of the patterns were available to us given the specific pavers we had. During that phone call (and via email), we were told that the random pattern was recommended by the paver supplier so we chose that one. Less than 24 hours later, the paver install began late afternoon/early evening and no one was home. GMM attempted to contact us via text and phone call, but given we were at work they could not reach us. They completed more than 3/4 of the installation in a pattern we did not choose before my husband was able to get home from work and find out what happened. With all the trouble we would had with the project up to this point, we chose to allow the crew to finish the install in that pattern simply to have a finished product. There are smaller unresolved items that were communicated to GMM, fixes attempted once, though they remain unresolved today. The path of least resistance for us was to end this project by any means necessary. Accepting these smaller problems, pavers in a pattern we did not approve, the fact we would have to seek new landscapers to correct our property damage, and an invoice credit to pay for some of the work to do so was the best choice for us. Please dont hesitate to reach out for pictures or additional details regarding our experience.
Response from GM Masonry, LLC
"Hi Megan, First, your reviews keep changing it is hard to keep up - now you claim a site map was offered and declined by our company? Blatant lie. The "damages" you refer to was the dirt from the front walkway that was excavated and that you agreed to be dumped in the backyard. You were not clear on where you wanted the pile moved to and as a result it was put in an area that was in fact on your neighbors property line. You apologized countless times to us and our crew that you were not clear on where it should be put and you did not specify the property line; you were very upset because you didnt know how your neighbors would react. Approx. 30 ft from your driveway; you have a propane tank buried underground. We had to stay clear of the propane tank which didnt give us a direct path to the area to dump the dirt. We relocated the dirt per your request, supplied top soil and grass seed to both areas, again. While moving the pile of dirt; there was a large rock in the path to the area that we were putting the pile; we also pushed the rock. It was never specified that this rock was placed there intentionally, or at least it certainly didnt look as if it was. You then asked for the rock to be moved back to where it was. We agreed to move the rock back - however, this would require a much larger machine. Even though you had agreed to have us dump the excavated dirt in the backyard, it was very clear how upset you were that machine tracks were left on the grass. I offered a credit to try and resolve the matter to leave the rock where it was to not further "damage" your lawn or cause you further upset. We supplied and installed top soil and grass seed again and offered to have a professional landscaper to come out and hydro-seed your lawn or do anything else they felt fit to resolve the matter to appease you at our cost. I asked you if I could have them come out to assess the lawn and you agreed. The highly reputable landscape company stated we did a more than acceptable job with the top soil and grass seed and that since your entire lawn is crab grass and/or dead yellow grass that if we hydro-seeded those areas it would make it even more noticeable. We feel we have been more than willing to work with you on this. Regarding the pattern: during the initial paver selection process we came to your house on three separate occasions delivering you samples of pavers at your request because you did not have time to visit our suppliers. We?ve exchanged numerous emails and correspondence on the selections. You finally chose a 2-piece paver style and you chose a pattern layout that was meant for a 4-piece paver style. There wasn't much room to play with the pattern because you had a 2-piece style with no border course. We reached out to you with texts and phone calls while we were installing the pavers to let you know that the pattern you chose was not attainable, with no response. We proceeded until your husband came home and spoke with him on the phone and explained that the sheet I had sent to you had a 4-piece pattern and that was the one you had chosen. He then called you, sent you pictures and you said it was okay to proceed. We installed the pavers and spoke to you that evening and you said it looked good and were happy with it but just wanted the large rock moved back to its original place. As previously mentioned, moving this rock back would result in driving another large machine in the backyard where we already spread top soil and grass seed causing further "damage". You agreed to leave the rock where it is and take a credit off of the final invoice. We feel that we tried to rectify the issues with multiple attempts and even with a substantial credit, it is unfortunate that you are still left this unhappy. Thank you, Katie"
