Deck or Porch - Build or Replace
We discussed the project for a few weeks, as I requested a contract that showed separation between the labor and material costs. I also requested that he confirm what all was included, which he did by text message after multiple invoices were sent for the same price but lacking the full clarification I required. In our text message exchange, he assured me that no labor charges would be required until the job was fully complete and I was satisfied, and he would show up with a crew of nine people and be done in less than two weeks. He started on August 4, 2025, when he showed up with several people; however, they were all teenagers. We removed the existing deck and staircase. He also took several photos, as I requested evidence of the previous builder's mistakes, since this was the reason for the Deck being rebuilt. He did this no problem. He promised me that he would send me an email noting the mistakes he found and the pictures at the end of the project. The demolition went fine, and the next day, when he showed up, there were fewer teenagers and another adult who seemed to be experienced in Deck building, and the project was progressing quickly and nicely while we discussed certain specifics and any issues that came up. I also was ordering other supplies that they would need, but we discovered one of them was not going to come in time by the end of the week, and they were not going to be able to finish within 10 days as he had hoped. Another worker even noted that they had another project they were supposed to start the following Wednesday. He assured me that he had no other projects lined up before mine was finished, but that turned out to be untrue. After the first week and a half, he did not show up again for several days. Then it turned into two weeks at a time, as he had numerous excuses, from falling off his roof and being sore to his nephew running over his dog. By the end of August, his brother had died, he said, and he had to help take care of his brother‘s children. I don’t recall exactly how many weeks went by before he came back to at least add the staircase so that we could get down off the back deck, but it was October before the majority of the Deck was completed. He still had not worked on the front porch, and that was not worked on until Thanksgiving, while I was on vacation, and the pillars added were not completed or done properly, as one is still loose and has to be redone. The gates to my staircase and pool deck have still not been completed and materials purchased including a $260 railing were taken by the Contractor back to his homework workshop and still have not been returned with numerous excuses, including forgetting that he had it all together and then not being able to find it and then claiming that he would order me a new one and have it delivered to my house, but he never did. He’s not been here in four months, and even when he has come, he’s only here for a couple of hours at a time and doesn’t even complete anything correctly or complete it at all. My concrete pad has a hole in it and needs to be resurfaced, and he never even removed the mold for the concrete. It’s been here since January. I finally had someone else take it off. He installed the door for me free of charge, but he still didn’t complete it by lining it up correctly where we’re putting the new door handle on. He had offered extra services to make up for taking so long to complete the deck, but everything he starts, he doesn’t finish. I have lost countless hours messaging him and him promising that he’s coming and then not showing up and not even messaging me to tell me he’s not showing up. I have every single text message and can prove the countless broken promises. Every arranged my work schedule and left me materials laying around my home and my yard thinking that he is coming back the next day to finish only to find that these things have been laying around my home for a year with so many projects and complete which has affected me having holiday celebrations and company at my home graduation celebrations for my children and lost hours of work and time taken off expecting him to show up and then not. He promised he would give me another thousand dollars back and bring my materials but still has not shown up with just more and more excuses of emergencies or divorce or having to move or broken down vehicles, etc., a few weeks ago, my attorney even called him to explain that we would be taking legal action if he did not complete the project and show up he promised that he would within 10 days and a few days before the end of that 10 days he messaged promising he would be here and then never showed up. I was angry because he also didn’t even ask me what day was good for me, and this is something he did throughout the entire project was just told me when he was coming instead of asking when he could reschedule to come here. He would say he was even coming on a Saturday or Sunday without even asking me, as if I just had no other plans, but to be here for a contractor to show up whenever he felt like it became absolutely ridiculous, and I began to suspect he was either drinking or on drugs. One time he said he didn’t show up here because he dropped his uncle off at the airport, and his uncle accidentally took his phone on the flight. This was after he had been coming to my house for five months at this time, so to insinuate that he didn’t know how to get to my house without his phone was just absolutely ridiculous. I don’t know what else to do. I have been more than patient and understanding. But now it’s been over a year, and he’s just completely stopped responding. He also never gave me the receipts from Lowe’s when he picked up the materials, and there are hundreds of dollars worth of wood that is brand new and perfectly good lying in my yard because he overbought with my credit card. And I have no means to return it at this point now that it’s past the time, and he never gave me the receipts. He left parts of my pool deck not complete and dangerous to walk on. He also left part of my pool deck unsupported since he didn’t attach it properly to the new deck he added on. There are parts of my deck that are not level or square and need to be redone. Several pieces of wood need replacing; some screws were not screwed in properly. They need to be adjusted. There are wood pieces that were never sanded, and if you walk on them, you will get splinters. The wood that he purchased was not seasoned, and he did not let it sit out in the weather before building my deck, so the wood has shrunk considerably in many of the areas, or almost the entire deck and staircase, and some of it will need to be redone. Lowe’s is not responsible for the wood you pick, and he tried to blame it on the company when he saw how much the wood shrunk. I am in the process now of trying to find somebody else to fix this before the fall, now that I’ve lost the entire summer with my new deck being built correctly and being able to be used.

Deck or Porch - Build or Replace
$35,000
I hired Golden Nails in May of 2025. The contract was for a screened in porch, a handicapped ramp with concrete pad to side door and a front porch. The job was estimated to take 2 weeks and it has now been 11 months and it is still not done. It took the contractor over 2 weeks to start the project and he constantly delayed it, one excuse after another. He made promises to show up and never came. The terms of the contract were 10% down and the net upon completion. Every time he showed up he asked for more money. Before long I had paid for the job in full plus $1000. Still more excuses. The ceiling and trim work is incomplete to the screened in porch. Parts of it still need to be stained and there is no handrail on the steps. The handicapped ramp has no railing and the concrete pad was never put in. The front porch is "complete" but looks like child's work. Mr. Golden even agreed it needed to be re-done. Please do not hire this man or you will be sorely disappointed.

He did not finish the project he asked for the remaining amount and said he would be back the next day to finish it and have the invoice for us and clean up. But he never came back to finish. He made excuses for why he was unable to finish starting with his dog was attacked by coyotes, his truck was in the shop,he had the flu, he was flooded in, he had to fire his help, they didn't show up, they quit, They went hunting instead of working you name it he took advantage of a couple of senior citizens whom he over charged and took advantage of do not trust him. He even told us he was related to the lady who started Angie's list, not true

Poor quality of work. I had to stop his work after 2 days. He bolted the header board for an elevated platform through the metal siding on the house. There were two vertical posts near the foot of the access ramp for the deck. Some of the 4x4 posts were only in the ground about 12". We ended up tearing all of his work out and had a competent contractor replace it. Do not waste your money, hire someone who will do the job correctly.

I hired Golden Nails to add 600 sq. feet to my house including a complete bathroom addition and kitchen remodel/redo. They did a great job and were extremely thorough!! The end result was absolutely stunning - and I definitely appreciate that Golden Nails stayed in touch throughout the project to ensure things were getting done completely and accurately. Great job!!!

Absolutely NOT. Dan and his crew started our deck demolition June 8 and we let him go on July 22 (deck was still unfinished). If you want to hire this company, that is your decision, we CAN NOT in good faith recommend this company to anyone ever.

"Good evening everyone I pland on finishing the job we had to special order the 4x4 post sleeve the hooked together around 4x4 post because there was a roof on it and they didnt like the delay so they told me not to come back wich there was 3k left for 3 hrs of work so they finshed"

I needed a 12×19 deck torn down and some work done on the existing deck. The first picture with green waste can was deck to be torn down. Dan came to look at it and ask me what my budget was. Oh this old boy is nothing but a con artist. He told me he would come with 7 guys they would tear old deck off and have existing deck refurbished with rotten boards replaced, all new spindles , he would even have a couple guys clean my gutters, oh and he was going to throw in a door for my back porch he just had that another lady didn't want. Then they would pressure wash and paint remaining deck. This is what $3500.00 got me. It won't let me upload all the pictures. But they were only there 5 hours. Left posts sticking up out of the ground. I'm a grandaughter of a carpenter, and my brother is a Carpenter. This is not right. I would laugh if I wasn't so furious. When I approached him that I was not happy he promised to have it all fixed by today 6/7/2025. I haven't heard anything from him.
Response from Golden Nails Construction General Contractor
"This lady walked the project with me and said she was happy and then paid me. I didn't get to know money from her until the project was done, so what she could afford so 3 days go by she want her money back ???? Make no sense to me thanks guy I do good work. I can't do everything for free"

Deck or Porch - Build or Replace
$16,000
The good: Hired Dan on April 3, 2025 to demo our old deck (24x~20) and unpermitted sunroom (12 x 12) and build a new deck (25x10). He quoted us $10000 for the demolition and $4000 for the deck build + Materials. On April 16, we discovered substantial rot in our band board (2 x 12 around the foundation). Dan offered to replace it with pressure treated lumber for an additional $2000. Deck was mostly finished on April 23. The bad: of the 3 projects Dan agreed to, none of them have been finished. For example, aluminum fascia was never reinstalled along the roof line where the sunroom previously attached to the house and siding and a gate were never installed on the new deck. Worst of all, when replacing the band board, they cut an electrical wire. When troubleshooting why outlets weren't working in the living room, I discovered a live unshielded wire in my crawl space and a penis drawn in the insulation. As of May 22, attempts to reach Dan since have been unsuccessful. Very disappointed.

Wood or Fiber Cement Siding Installation or Complete Replacement
Mr. Golden and his crew were quick and efficient. They installed new siding on our 50+ years-old house, replacing the original aluminum siding. They started on a Monday, and, after a couple of days of rain, finished one week later. They cleaned up after themselves as they worked, and we are very pleased with the outcome. He has a good sized crew, so things get done quickly and efficiently.

Deck or Porch - Build or Replace
Do not hire Dan Golden, owner of Golden Nails Construction. I hired him to build a screened-in deck on my house with a breezeway or ramp to my garage. Dan no-called or no-showed several appointments with lame excuses, including: his goats were having babies, his daughter ran her car into a ditch, and his car would not start. (Reg Flag No. 1) Goats have been having babies unassisted for millennia. His daughter was uninjured, and the accident was literally a fender-bender. His car died 2.5 miles from my house, and I offered to pick him up. Dan said that he was not sure how he was going to tie in the new construction to my existing buildings (Red Flag No. 2), but he said he would figure it out. Dan said that he would obtain a building permit from the city and arrange for utilities to be located. Neither of those things ever happened. Red Flag No. 3 Dan said that the project would be completed by the time I had surgery on Dec. 22, which was one of the main reasons I wanted the ramp, etc. Dan got the decking installed Dec. 14, and I never saw him again. Not screened-in, no roof, no doors, no carpet, etc. I understand that it was winter in Indiana, and I waited until early March, when the weather finally improved, to contact him again. He said that he had had surgery but would be ready to go back to work in a few weeks. I suggested that he come by the house to refresh everyone memory of the scope of the project, etc., and he agreed, saying that he would be out-and-about and would stop by within the next week or so. That never happened, and I knew it was time to call another carpenter. The new guy showed me where Dan work was not square sometimes as much as 5 inches or plumb. The new carpenter also pointed out that the decking Dan installed was not rated for exterior use. It ended up costing me more money for the new carpenter to demo most of Dan work and basically start from scratch. Dan had removed the concrete steps that had been where my new deck is now. I had asked him to deliver the steps to my son house. I told him that I would pay for that separately because it was not included in his quote. He said that he would do it, but that never happened. After the new carpenter began his work, I texted Dan one last time to convey my deep disappointment in him. He texted me right back, acknowledging that he had done me wrong. He said that he would get the steps to my son and refund me $1,200. That has never happened either.  Dan comes across like some good, old country boy. Do not be fooled like I was. I would still like to have those steps delivered and the $1,200 refund.
Response from Golden Nails Construction General Contractor
"I paid her back the money, and I have someone taking her son his steps. I am a good contractor. I do great work I had a new crew out there I just started that crew and they did have it out of square. her son received his step a week ago this lady just trying to bet my business up I have a lot of customers that are Doctors and layer that will let anyone that wants to hire me for there project I work on million dollar homes and do fantastic work pls don't let this lady scare you away just call and set a appointment . I was preparing my house which is large over 3000 sq ft to list for sale. I needed a lot of work done in a short amount of time. My screen porch was falling apart, there were rotting boards along the front of my house that needed replaced, the entire interior of house needed repainted, front of house needed repainted, carpets needed cleaning etc. I found Daniel on Angie's List and he was able to come out and give me an estimate right away. He and his crew despite having a busy schedule, completed all work in less than 2 weeks, sometimes showing up early and staying late. Also, he saved me from having to pay a plumber to replace a cracked/broken sink pop up drain that I had forgotten about which he fixed for free along with touching up marks on the ceiling in one of my bedrooms which he also did free of charge. Throughout the process he never asked me to pay him for any work he had not already completed, only for materials. His pricing was very reasonable.

Dan's team took on a large basement renovation for me. They were able to start very quickly and made progress fast. Dan is very knowledgable when it comes to plumbing matters so that was very helpful. The bulk of the project wrapped up quickly but we had a few follow-ups that took a while to complete due to supply delays and weather/scheduling delays. My only issue is sometimes Dan was hard to nail down regarding his schedule but ultimately we got everything finished! A few small things needed to be adjusted but his team was quick to handle it. We are happy with the final result!
