We discussed the project for a few weeks, as I requested a contract that showed separation between the labor and material costs. I also requested that he confirm what all was included, which he did by text message after multiple invoices were sent for the same price but lacking the full clarification I required. In our text message exchange, he assured me that no labor charges would be required until the job was fully complete and I was satisfied, and he would show up with a crew of nine people and be done in less than two weeks. He started on August 4, 2025, when he showed up with several people; however, they were all teenagers. We removed the existing deck and staircase. He also took several photos, as I requested evidence of the previous builder's mistakes, since this was the reason for the Deck being rebuilt. He did this no problem. He promised me that he would send me an email noting the mistakes he found and the pictures at the end of the project. The demolition went fine, and the next day, when he showed up, there were fewer teenagers and another adult who seemed to be experienced in Deck building, and the project was progressing quickly and nicely while we discussed certain specifics and any issues that came up. I also was ordering other supplies that they would need, but we discovered one of them was not going to come in time by the end of the week, and they were not going to be able to finish within 10 days as he had hoped. Another worker even noted that they had another project they were supposed to start the following Wednesday. He assured me that he had no other projects lined up before mine was finished, but that turned out to be untrue. After the first week and a half, he did not show up again for several days. Then it turned into two weeks at a time, as he had numerous excuses, from falling off his roof and being sore to his nephew running over his dog. By the end of August, his brother had died, he said, and he had to help take care of his brothers children. I dont recall exactly how many weeks went by before he came back to at least add the staircase so that we could get down off the back deck, but it was October before the majority of the Deck was completed. He still had not worked on the front porch, and that was not worked on until Thanksgiving, while I was on vacation, and the pillars added were not completed or done properly, as one is still loose and has to be redone. The gates to my staircase and pool deck have still not been completed and materials purchased including a $260 railing were taken by the Contractor back to his homework workshop and still have not been returned with numerous excuses, including forgetting that he had it all together and then not being able to find it and then claiming that he would order me a new one and have it delivered to my house, but he never did. Hes not been here in four months, and even when he has come, hes only here for a couple of hours at a time and doesnt even complete anything correctly or complete it at all. My concrete pad has a hole in it and needs to be resurfaced, and he never even removed the mold for the concrete. Its been here since January. I finally had someone else take it off. He installed the door for me free of charge, but he still didnt complete it by lining it up correctly where were putting the new door handle on. He had offered extra services to make up for taking so long to complete the deck, but everything he starts, he doesnt finish. I have lost countless hours messaging him and him promising that hes coming and then not showing up and not even messaging me to tell me hes not showing up. I have every single text message and can prove the countless broken promises. Every arranged my work schedule and left me materials laying around my home and my yard thinking that he is coming back the next day to finish only to find that these things have been laying around my home for a year with so many projects and complete which has affected me having holiday celebrations and company at my home graduation celebrations for my children and lost hours of work and time taken off expecting him to show up and then not. He promised he would give me another thousand dollars back and bring my materials but still has not shown up with just more and more excuses of emergencies or divorce or having to move or broken down vehicles, etc., a few weeks ago, my attorney even called him to explain that we would be taking legal action if he did not complete the project and show up he promised that he would within 10 days and a few days before the end of that 10 days he messaged promising he would be here and then never showed up. I was angry because he also didnt even ask me what day was good for me, and this is something he did throughout the entire project was just told me when he was coming instead of asking when he could reschedule to come here. He would say he was even coming on a Saturday or Sunday without even asking me, as if I just had no other plans, but to be here for a contractor to show up whenever he felt like it became absolutely ridiculous, and I began to suspect he was either drinking or on drugs. One time he said he didnt show up here because he dropped his uncle off at the airport, and his uncle accidentally took his phone on the flight. This was after he had been coming to my house for five months at this time, so to insinuate that he didnt know how to get to my house without his phone was just absolutely ridiculous. I dont know what else to do. I have been more than patient and understanding. But now its been over a year, and hes just completely stopped responding. He also never gave me the receipts from Lowes when he picked up the materials, and there are hundreds of dollars worth of wood that is brand new and perfectly good lying in my yard because he overbought with my credit card. And I have no means to return it at this point now that its past the time, and he never gave me the receipts. He left parts of my pool deck not complete and dangerous to walk on. He also left part of my pool deck unsupported since he didnt attach it properly to the new deck he added on. There are parts of my deck that are not level or square and need to be redone. Several pieces of wood need replacing; some screws were not screwed in properly. They need to be adjusted. There are wood pieces that were never sanded, and if you walk on them, you will get splinters. The wood that he purchased was not seasoned, and he did not let it sit out in the weather before building my deck, so the wood has shrunk considerably in many of the areas, or almost the entire deck and staircase, and some of it will need to be redone. Lowes is not responsible for the wood you pick, and he tried to blame it on the company when he saw how much the wood shrunk. I am in the process now of trying to find somebody else to fix this before the fall, now that Ive lost the entire summer with my new deck being built correctly and being able to be used.
