Greenwald Tile & Stone, Inc.
About us
The Greenwald Tile and Stone Company, was founded in Greenville, South Carolina in 1983. Our tile-setters and stone-masons each have decades of experience. We specialize in high-end residential applications, but we also frequently engage in commercial work as well. About Us: The Greenwald Tile and Stone Company, was founded by Norm Greenwald in Greenville, South Carolina in 1983. Norm already had seventeen years of experience as a tile-setter before launching his own business (so that would mean he now has close to forty years of experience). Our company has now expanded to four tile-setters and one stone-mason. We prefer to keep the company at this size in order to more effectively maintain the high standards of quality for which Greenwald Tile has come to be recognized. Our niche in the tile-setting market is work requiring a high level of expertise and craftsmanship (have a look at our gallery to check this out for yourself). The more challenging or unique the job, the better. We use the highest quality materials, including tile, marble, granite, slate, and brick pavers. We prefer to utilize traditional methods that have been proven over the centuries. Modern advances in material science have led to products such as cement boards which make tile installation quicker and easier, but not necessarily better. The old school technique which has been largely replaced by backer boards was for the tile-setter himself to use hand-mixed mortar to prepare the perfect surface for the tile (this is normally referred to as "mud" work). This allowed the craftsman to create a surface which was rigid, durable, the proper thickness, perfectly flat, smooth, plumb and level (or sloped as needed). Under the best of circumstances, tile installation over backer board will be almost as good as over "mud" and maybe as durable, but no one can say for sure because cement boards haven't been around for centuries. Greenwald Tile is one of the few companies in the region which still practice these old techniques and is perhaps the only around to have passed these skills on to the next generation of tile-setters. Of course, backer board jobs are child's play to the craftsman who has mastered mud work, so we can do either if the need arises. Most of our commercial work is handled by Thomas. Our stone-mason is Bill Baddorf. Bill apprenticed with us as a tile-setter when he was a teenager in the early nineties, but quickly gravitated toward stone-masonry and has been our stone-mason ever since. Bill is now, without exaggeration, one of the best stone-masons in the area, quite an accomplishment for someone his age. The common feature of these two facets of our organization is the extreme level of craftsmanship we put into our work. Our goal is to meet the needs of our customers in a timely fashion with the utmost attention to detail. We are master craftsmen at installing tile, marble, granite, slate, and brick pavers and at stone-masonry.
