"This is the case where the customer had about a half dozen major problems with his door because it was installed improperly, but he told us he didn't have the money to replace it right now. So, we proposed a few things short of that, and he only want two of those things done - installing new weather-stripping and a threshold (there was no threshold even installed when we got there -- probably because the original installer could not even put one in because it was too messed up). As a result, our estimate was not to just put on weather-stripping as the customer misleadingly says, but it was to also install a threshold and it included the shopping time needed to purchase the materials. In addition, because the door was not installed properly to begin with, these normally straightforward projects were very complicated. The gaps between the door and the door jamb and the bottom of the door to the floor were exceptionally large, so trying to cover those gaps with a standard threshold and standard weather-stripping was extremely challenging, especially because he had 4 locks on his door that affected the way the door closed. But, at the end of the day, everything that we did looked nice and was working properly as evidenced by our photos. We only worked on the things in our estimate. We did not attempt to fix all of the other things that were wrong with the door. Most importantly, the customer's wife examined the door with our craftsman before he left, and she signed the invoice acknowledging the "satisfactory completion" of the work. We went out of our way to go back a second day to trim some of the weatherstripping and adjust all the locks to make the door work a little better, and we waived the charge for this work, even for the work on the locks which was not part of our original estimate. The customer is being deceptive in that part of the time spent at the store was our craftsman face-timing him to discuss several options for the materials since this was not a standard installation like he says. In any case, he wasn't charged for this additional time. More sadly, he grossly misrepresents the billing. After discussing everything with him, we graciously agreed with him to only charge for the original estimate's 2.5 hours, not the 6.5 hours that he indicates, even though we did a lot more additional work, including adjusting his locks. This is really a case where he wanted us to fix every issue with his door which should have been replaced, but didn't want to pay for more than a couple of hours worth of work, including our shopping time. We bent over backwards for over 6 hours on two separate trips and waived 4 of those hours. We wish we would could alert other contractors to avoid this individual, because they will ultimately run into the same fate until he decides to spend the money to replace the door."
