J White Contracting

After spending a month away from our VT house, we returned to find evidence of water damage on the kitchen ceiling and some plaster beginning to crumble near the water marks. We called in our plumber, who examined the affected area and determined that the water marks were not the result of a plumbing issue but were caused by a roof problem. So we started calling roofing companies and chose J. White Contracting, one of the two pro's; recommended by Angi, to repair our metal roof (because J. White was available to come sooner than the other Angi pro). Mr. White and his assistant arrived at our house on the afternoon of Dec. 15. (They were originally scheduled to come on Dec. 12 but called that day to postpone.) They completed the work that same day, and we paid them by check before they left. According to an invoice sent to us by e-mail on Dec. 12, the cost of the work was going to be $1,500, but on Dec. 15 we were told that additional sealant; had been needed, so the final amount we paid was $1,815 (net of a military discount provided to us in accordance with the glossy brochure that J. White gave us upon arrival). We did not object to the increased price because using extra sealant sounded to us like a good idea. Mr. White told us that he had a three-visit policy: if his teams initial work didn't solve the problem, his people would come back again once and, if necessary, twice to do further repairs. We thought this policy sounded reasonable. After Mr. White and his assistant finished working on our roof, everything seemed fine for nearly two weeks. Then on Dec. 27 we awoke to see water dripping -- for the first time! -- from our kitchen ceiling in the area where the water marks had originally appeared. We immediately contacted Mr. White by text to report this development. Since then, we have called him and texted him on numerous occasions, trying to get him to send someone to stop the drips, but no one has come despite our pleas for help.

I would not say that I would recommend John but it is not because the work was not completed or that his crew did not do a good job. His crew was hard working and polite. Everything was cleaned up around the house when they completed the job. My problem was with the way the metal roof was done. I had expected that each panel would cover from the ridge to the end of the roof making it a seamless column. This is the only way I have ever seen a metal roof. In my neighborhood, there are at least 10 homes with metal roofs and all are done this way. My new roof has two panels for each column. They meet in the middle causing the roof to have a seam all the way across the middle. When I asked John about this, he said I never indicated that I wanted a single panel. I said that since he never asked me about it, I just assumed that it was going to be like all the roofs I had seen. At this point, the roof was approximately three quarters completed. Every time I drive into my yard it is a painful reminder that you should not assume anything. In addition to this, the quoted price ended up being approximately $300 more. All in all, this was not a good experience for me. Live and learn.

John was professional, prompt and polite. The project came in on budget. The jobsite was left very clean. I would recommend them and use them again. His crew did a great job.

John and his crew were AMAZING! I reached out to John regarding sealing and coating my metal roof. I hear back from John fast! He even came to my house the next day to take a look at what needed to be done. We agreed on a VERY reasonable price, shook hands and then he said "Okay see you tomorrow to get it all done." WOW! I wish you could have seen my face, LOL. Sure enough the next day Jonh and his crew came and performed my roof sealant application. All of them were very professional, friendly and made sure to clean everything up. John had me come out and take a look at the completed work, which was beautiful! THANK YOU! I definitely recommend J. White Contracting for anyone looking for fast, professional and fair priced service. John did not even leave my driveway from completing my roof job, and we were already talking about my next plans of hiring him again! I look forward to working with you again next year John, and the rest of your crew!
