They were not professional. Very amateur. They did NOT have the experience to do what they said they could do. They damaged the new cabinet by drilling three holes in it because they did not measure. They brought their entire family, including their mother to the job site. Never again will I use them.
Response from Lemmon & Smith Handyman Services
"Usually if someone is unhappy I would hope they would talk to us. Nothing was even said to us and I told him we would make sure the holes were filled in with wood putty and my mother coming to the job site she is part of our company. He said he would be talking to us and the rest of the cupboards would be in in 2 weeks so we could come put them in. This is the first I even heard he was unhappy. Wow."

Handyman for Multiple Small Projects
I would like to start by saying that this Family owned business is run by nice, decent people. My ratings are based on the complete lack of workmanship/quality of work, and delays in work completion. I have photos of work done by them, which they thought were finished, but when drywall work is performed and painted after only taping/mudding a surface and not sanding... Trim work was done with white primed trim pieces, no paint was applied, they stated that they were not told they required painting. Size of nails used in a window replacement and cabinet work were approximately 2 1/2 inches long, which they ended up running up into a cabinet, 10+ nails sticking up through the bottom of the shelf by 1 to 1.5 inches, and also nailed through bottom sill of new window, we got an oops on those parts. The cabinet sanding and re-staining was the only portion of the job that truly looked as good as they said it would, everything else was basically a paint over everything, including tape, unfilled nail holes, un-prepped drywall surfaces, etc. To top this all off, I agreed to pay 80% of the agreed upon fees due to the length of time it was taking to complete the project and them needing funds to pay employees. We fired them because of the quality of work issues that were not being properly repaired. We now have a mechanics lien on our property because they were upset that we didn't pay the full amount. It is costing me more to fix the issues they left when they thought they were "99.9% complete". They had great reviews here on Home Advisor and were very professional upfront, but after early issues delayed the start of the work and numerous issues with getting their full crew to show up, things quickly went down hill. I honestly believe the project as a whole was too big, and if it had been a much smaller project, things would have been different. But pretty much a complete home repaint, trim work, cabinet work, countertops, a window and door replacements stretched their crew too thin. A project that should have been 2-3 weeks turned into 2 months, and it has taken 2 weeks to repair what wasn't done properly. All of the other contractors I have used for this house project performed VERY well! I will be addressing the lien with the Iowa court system and will update as soon as complete. I hate giving a review like this, but please make sure you hire them with the expectation that you will need to monitor the quality of work performed, and that you ensure up front the scope of your project and your expectations are understood fully.
Response from Lemmon & Smith Handyman Services
"I will start off by saying this couple changed what they wanted and added things throughout the project that was not charged any extra for. 2 days before the final day we were there, Jeff came in and said everything was good and the only thing he was concerned about was the countertop. We retrimmed things they didn?t like, repainted things they said didn?t look right, and added drywall at the last minute which they were not charged for. Their flooring people backed out on them so they did t get the flooring done until the week prior to our last day. I cannot trim the baseboards until the floors are in. So the wife yells at my husband because the doors weren't painted on both sides. That's funny because the husband specifically walked around the house with me and told me only to paint the side of the door that showed and not to paint the bathroom doors because they matched the bathroom. Also, when the wife saw the den trimmed out in the white trim (that wasn't painted) she said it looked great. Plus we built an arch for over the door that the husband tore down, build shelves in the bedroom for a tv and they loved these things as well. Up until the last day when we left the job because they were unreasonable (we were not told we were fired) we told them we had spent way too much time there and all of a sudden when we were everything looked great and the only thing he was worried about was the countertop, 2 days later when the wife showed up nothing is right when they would have needed to pay the additional $1574.63. Alot of this stems from when his floor people backed out on him which pushed the project back, not us because I cannot trim until the floors are done, he asked us for a bid to do the floors and he felt our bid was too high and he had to go to someone else. And if the other contractors are so very wonderful, why is there a gap in the tile that the trim would not cover because the tile person cut it wrong. I retrimmed the upstairs bedroom which was not part of the bid as that room was just painting sills and building the TV stand. He didn't like the trim the first time so I redid it the way he wanted. We had to work around all their stuff the entire time as the house was not cleaned out as we were promised. They told us they wanted makeup on a pig and they got way more than that for a job we should have charged $9000 for. They needed to communicate with what they wanted done because one of them told us one thing and then the other told us another. Everything on the contract that they approved was done and was done well. We didn't charge them more for the extras. When it was time to pay they stiffed us because I believe they were over budget. Some people want something for nothing."

I liked that a woman came out first to look over what I wanted done, she sent me an estimate, and the final price was the same. They are very down to earth, good natured, and willing to please. I hired them back for another project.
