TLDR: slow, expensive, poor workmanship. I am giving them a 2 instead of 1 star just because I like Alan and his crewmen as human beings. I dont think they are necessarily trying to screw people, more just incompetent. I signed up for a time and materials contract with them because my building plan (post frame) was complex and was sure to present some unexpected challenges. $35k later I asked Alan to give me a bid to finish the project because he claimed we were 70-80% done and I was tired of watching it move slower and slower while costs mounted. He came back with a bid of and additional $54k to finish putting the roof on the place. I think this was more of a screw you I am not interested in your project anymore bid than an honest assessment of project costs. I found another honest hard working crew and they finished it for about $15k. It probably would have been even less but they had to spend a day or two fixing stuff that the Masterfield crew had messed up, mostly stuff that was far enough out of level / plumb / square that it prevented moving forward until it was corrected. Another annoying thing was that when Masterfield left, then not only took all the materials I had paid for through them on the and contract (like nails, house wrap, etc.) but the also took all my roof truss hangers and hardware, which was stuff they did not even purchase. I had to pester them for a week to bring me back my roof hardware but they kept everything else. They also mistakenly took my wheelbarrow and left their own, and they left a pile of scaffolding structural pieces that are still in my yard even after I told them multiple times that they forgot these and where to find them. Overall, I wish I dismissed Masterfield sooner but the silver lining is that I found a solid crew to work with on future projects.

The two men that came out were very courteous. The person who talked to me over the phone was very confrontational and called me a liar. We asked the owner to come out and review the situation, but he refused to come out.

    Response from Company:

We are sorry you are unhappy with our company. We do our very best to provide a comprehensive estimate that is very clear as to what work we are quoting. When our company spoke to you on the phone, no one called you a liar. We are sorry you perceived it that way. We spoke to you on many occasions, and simply asked that you not speak over us, let us respond to your concerns, and that we all wanted the same outcome, for you to be happy with the deck sanding and stain. We did follow up with you, and our last conversation was that you were going to choose the deck stain you wanted and put it on hold, that you would contact our crewman, whose information was provided to you, and let him know where to obtain your product, at our cost. Additionally, we let you know the additional work would be 100% covered by Masterfield Construction, at no extra charge to you. We never heard anything back. When we discovered you were unhappy, via an Angi's representative, we refunded the remainder of your deposit. Again, we apologize that this ended in an unsatisfactory manner.

Communication with office and owner poor. Once I paid down payment had to call several times to get scheduled. Once repaired started and there were issues couldnâ t get owner to reply to calls, texts or e-mails. Quality of repairs poor, used wrong wood repair products and put right on very wet wood sealing in water and rot. Did not complete beam restoration as promised. Will not hire again. Not worthy of title â Angi proâ

    Response from Company:

We are sorry, and very surprised, that you are unhappy with our company. We felt that since we worked two days at your home, while only charging you for one day, and addressed each and every concern prior to leaving with your happy approval that you were satisfied with our service. Additionally, we are confused regarding your comments about not being responsive. We returned each email as soon as possible; and answered all your calls. Further, your contract called for only repairing 3 deck joists and installing 4 pieces of wood. All aspects of the contract were fulfilled. Our foreman walked the project with you more than once and acquiesced to your request to fill several additional places with the rot resistor that were not in the contract. We are always happy to use the product our clients desire should they wish to defer from our recommendations. We are sorry you felt that our scheduling was not performed to your expectations. Unfortunately, due to the nature of construction being at the whims of the weather, material, current job completion and employee absenteeism, we are not always able to accurately predict exactly what day we will be able schedule, but are always happy to speak with, or email to, you at any time, address concerns, and adjust the contract and pricing parameters to include additional requests.

His attitude was not polite and he tried to put a lien on my house

    Response from Company:

Sadly, when you fail to pay your bill at the end of the project, our last resort is a lien. We attempted many times to communicate with you and received no response. We felt we completed your project, as well as the additional work you requested, in a timely manner, without billing you for the additional coordination or work time. Even with the non-payment/late payment of your balance, Masterfield Construction still backs its work and honors its one-year warranty.

Great professional crew and on time! Price on deck rehab reasonable. Highly recommend them and will hire them again for more work in spring.

Make sure anything promised is in writing. Quality of work is bordering on incompetence, owner difficult to work with. Tried to pass off work and materials that would not meet building codes. When I questioned the materials owner and contractor told me inspectors do not care! I told him I expected it built to code. Buyer beware of this company.

    4.5 Charles S. Reno, NV

A little expensive, but overall excellent work

    5.0 Erica Y. Reno, NV

Overall this is a great professionally run construction company from the owner and the office, to the crew. Excellent, reasonable, and efficient work. They have been a pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to refer them or hire them again!
