From jungle gyms at preschool to the door knobs at his childhood home, it was the curiosity to know how things fit together that intrigued him. It didn't take him long to realize that putting those things back together again was his true calling in life. Matrka began his formal career with a summer construction job in 1981 in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Later he began taking on a project here and there for a neighbor or friend, and then another, and another, until a small business began to grow up around him. Bringing his first employees to the business brought to life the values that define Matrka as a company today. Learning from other people's experiences in the workforce, Michael was determined to build a company where people could enjoy their jobs, and also enjoy their families and their lives.
