Hvac Detective

John Norwood is awesome! He is an eccentric, friendly guy who likes to talk. If you take the time to listen, you will learn a lot about your system and HVAC "philosophy" in general. He has saved us thousands of dollars. He comes a long way to work on our unit an stays at it until the job is done.

I've hired John for both plumbing and AC work. He is "All hat, no cattle." All talk, no action. He UNDERSTANDS plumbing and HVAC work, he just can't get it done right. Also, can't keep tenant names, addresses and phone numbers straight. Doesn't keep appointments. When he finally shows up at a job, it is generally without the equipment he needs, due to his disorganization. So he doesn't do the repair right, and you have to fix what he did when you hire someone else to do it right. Go out of your way to avoid this guy. He is a borderline public nuisance.

I hired John to replace Central air and add 2 mini splits to my upstairs. He had 2 workers install one of the mini splits unsupervised. They did not install the mini split correctly and we found a large amount of water dripping on to our newly refinished hard wood floors. The leak causes cupping and warping of the a portion of the floor. He was very resistant to accepting responsibility for the damage. He even told us to close the door, it's just cosmetic. We sent him an estimate for repair from the floor expert who had just done the floor. John balked at it. He tried to blame the AC itself. He refused to give us his insurance information so we had to file a complaint with Maryland board of HVAC to get insurance info. I obtained 6 estimated to repair the floor. All recommended replacing the damaged wood and resanding/stain al of the floor to match. He balked. Said he would fix it himself. He finally agrees to a partial fix of replacing the damaged wood only and we accepted that! Due to his responses, I reached out to BBB for help. John had blocked our number and will not respond, That is concerning, as we have a warranty and expect that to be honored. Please be aware that John did NOT obtain a permit for the job as we expected. His work was not inspected. We agreed to accept the partial fix. He started with a partial payment. Since he saw that I reached out to BBB for help, he has refused to pay any more. He wants to go to court and does not understand that he may have to pay court costs and full repair of the floor. We have had countless workers in our home over the last few months with no issues. John has been very difficult and shady to work with. He took the electricians extension cord. I ask you to beware and get insurance info before hiring and make sure you get a permit. As of now, we are waiting for response back from Board of HVAC investigation into his work. He only accepts CASH. He refuses to pay the rest now or discuss it. It is not worth the HASSLE.

We had a B*E service contract for years and they finally said we needed a new $8K unit. In these times, who has $8K to throw around. Still, we needed to do something. I came to HomeAdvisor and filled out a form. John got back to me within hours. I explained what B*E said and he said he could do a new unit for $5K --- but, "let's look at what you have." John noticed that a previous equipment failure damaged the evaporator - something that B*E should have noticed and fixed under the contract, but instead just pushed a new unit. John replaced the evaporator and balanced the entire system. The A/C is working great. During the entire process, I hung out with John as he worked. He is very knowledgeable and more that willing to share his wisdom. He explained everything thing he was doing and why is was necessary. I have always preferred to have someone I know and trust take care of my home repairs. I now have someone for my heating and air conditioning. Thanks John! P.S. Ty is still looking for you!

Norwood was great! They came out the next day, provided solid evaluation of the issue, and even recommended that I contact the warranty company. Due to that they ended up doing less of a job, but saved me money and earned my trust by sacrificing their income for quality service.

John is wonderful. He talked me through the entire process, and also educated me on what to do to avoid future problems with our AC. Rob, his technician, is a hard-working young man who also did a great job!
