We hired this company in spite of some of the lower reviews due to availability and the owners verbal reassurance that he would do excellent work. We asked James to replace and expand our existing deck with surrounding stairs. We were specific in asking that he make sure these things were done to code and structurally sound as we are having a hot tub installed on the deck in September. He provided a vague estimate in writing with no contract. When I asked if I needed to sign anything, he said no. I insisted on receipts for the payments we gave him and he did provide those, but we did not receive any receipts of material costs. He brought a high-school student with him the first day who did most of the demo while James bought supplies. They worked Monday and Tuesday, did not come Wednesday due to rain, and came Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, James mentioned that he might need more than the original estimate to finish the job, but he was not sure. On Friday, he came back asking for 40% more than the original estimate in order to complete the job (based on miscalculations on his part - he did not factor in the stairs, he claimed). We explained to him that since we showed pictures and were specific in what we wanted, we expected him to finish the job for the original estimate. We helped him clean up Friday (so we could mow the grass) and as we cleaned up, he bad-mouthed previous clients, specifically a former NFL player who he claimed was trying to sue him for an unfinished job. When he dropped his name (completely unprofessional), my son recognized it as an acquaintance of my husband. When James did not show up for work Monday, he first asked about the weather (no rain where we live) and later claimed that his daughter was in the hospital. He never returned to work. Tuesday I reached out to him via text and phone and he did not answer. Wednesday I tried again and after several attempts, was met with a very strange conversation about how he was trying to decide between a Rolls Royce and a Tesla due to fuel emissions. He would not answer any direct questions about the job or what we had hired him to do. We contacted the former NFL player he mentioned and they are in court over an unfinished job. They also have a lawyer involved due to a threat made by James since he has a key to their house. As a result, we also consulted a lawyer, and found that this is a consistent pattern. Our lawyer advised us to have additional estimates made by other contractors she knew and now we have to choose between finishing his poor job (boards are already coming up and the other contractors claim his supports are in less-than-ideal locations) or ripping up the work we paid him to do and starting over. In the meantime, James contacted me this past Friday via text, saying **Where is my money?** when we have paid 83% of the original estimate in cash to him already (for an unfinished job). When I explained that he had not finished the job, he threatened to put a lien on our house for the remaining amount. After speaking with our lawyer, she has advised us not to give him any more money and to leave this review so that other homeowners do not end up in a bad situation with this contractor. Deck contractors who have come out since said **he knows just enough to get himself in trouble** or **guys like this give us a bad name** Please be warned that he seems very nice at first, but does not follow through or keep his word. We are probably going to end up paying double in order to get the deck done correctly by someone else. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the Escalation department on Home Advisor before posting this review in order to give him a chance to do the right thing and finish what he agreed to do or refund some of the money since the job is incomplete. James did a good job. They where respectful to my home and family. Job turned out nice whole atic in a week including slats and insulation. I will use them again. Thanks James!

I hired him and got a contract. He started the work and then said he figured the money wrong and needed more money. I gave him some more money Nd he did some more work. Then he just stopped coming and would not return my calls. He never finished the job and i have not heard from him since. He does not do good business.

Never finished the job. I had to pay another company to finish the work. However, he is very talented. Should hire a project manager to ensure he does not take on too much.
