I needed a retaining wall replaced that lined my driveway with steps up to the sidewalk. The owner (Joe) came out to do the quote for the job. He stated that he personally does not do timber walls but had a contractor he knew who did. I trusted his reputation that he knew the quality of work his contractor did. Of course, assuming that the guy did this for a living. His quote was fair for replacing the wall and steps. Unfortunately, the contractor did not measure/fit the steps right, and they came down crooked. Also, where the roof steps themselves would have either fit flush with the stringer, or hung over a bit, they were recessed, and at the bottom, I had a visibly crooked extra step into my driveway. I asked the contractor about the step in the driveway as well as the recessed lip in the actual steps. He said that because I mentioned that the old steps seemed steep he was trying to make this better, and the lip in the steps was a new thing now and everybody is asking that theirs be done this way. I asked him if he would think these steps were alright for his home, he said sure. He built a retaining wall behind the steps, so he could not pull them stairs/stringers back into the hill further to get the step out of the driveway. Of course, I complained because it looked terrible. Upon some back and forth with Joe he said that they would come out and take a look (Joe did not see the steps prior to this) to see what could be done. The next message I received from Joe said *got stairs done and moved back in... will do stone tomorrow if it is not raining.* I responded that I thought he was going to look at this and let me know what could be done if anything, instead his contractor came out and cut off the bottom step (still crooked) and left me with almost a 12-inch step at the driveway level going up. I asked if he told him to do this. He said he told him to shorten it like it was before. He said he ate the cost of him *fixing* it. Other than the contractor s time, I ate the cost, as I paid for the steps. I asked if he stands behind the job and again was given a run down of what his contractor said he did. He said *we went with the cheapest route to save you money as you want... are you still not happy? If not we do not have a choice but to redo some of it at an additional cost to you.* Since I was not going to pay more for a job his contractor screwed up, I told him to come and get his money as it was apparent that this work was fine with Joe and without paying for new steps, this would not be fixed. The last message I received from Joe was basically a recap, ending with I am not going back and forth which is another reason I gave you his (contractor) number to call him directly. I used this information (because I now had a last name for the contractor), to look him up. My advice to anyone who hires Joe, make sure that you check into whoever the contractor is that he sends out to do your work as I learned that the guy he sent me is a mechanic, oil refinery worker, and dabbled in auto customization. Since I do not have a way to post pictures on Home Advisor, I will be posting them elsewhere.I appreciate that Joe tried to help initially, but I think in the future, he should check out the people he hires because his name is on Pro-Tactics work.
