Guess we were the "side" project while everyone else obtained good service and work. This was a major bathroom/bedroom remodel, over $45,000, so I felt we deserved better service. The estimated project time was 6 weeks. It took 6 months and one day, and only probably finished because we constantly pushed to get the project done. Rylie says he is hands on in his website, but over the 6 month long project (over 100 working days), he maybe was on site 20 days. Rylie has poor communication skills and seldom let us know when people were coming to work unless we pushed him for the information. A good example of Rylie not knowing what was happening on the project is the fact that his painter did not come to work for over 3 weeks, but Rylie was not aware of his absence. After telling Rylie that the walk in closet was one of the most important parts of the project, he ordered his own super expensive system without consulting us. It wasn't until after he ordered the system that he shared what he purchased, and then it was too late and nonreturnable. We ended up purchasing and installing our own system at our expense. He did not, however, charge us for his system. Some of Rylie's work shows carelessness and lack of pride. For example, making a wrong saw cut on a shelf and leaving it when it would have been a simple matter of recutting another piece of wood or even filling the bad cut since it was going to be painted anyway. He also left large gaps in the shelving, and it was extremely unlevel. Rylie has difficulty ordering the correct amount of supplies needed and when they are needed to be on site. Examples: Short on floor tile, short on wall tile, short on hardware, missing pieces on vanity which took 5 months to get. Rylie does not seem to have the ability to "back time" orders so that the project will continually flow. Examples: We actually discussed this project in early March in which time tile and doors could have been ordered since those took several months to come in. Instead, Rylie waits until those items are needed, thus the project comes to a dead halt while waiting for supplies to arrive. We are happy with the final results and do have a beautiful bathroom and gorgeous bedroom. If you decide to go with RJL Designs anyway, avoid the mistakes I made: 1) Do NOT pay the 80% up front as Rylie wants. He has no incentive to finish. If he won't take 50% down, then walk away and find someone else. 2) Put in a time line clause as to when the project is expected to be finished. 3) Put in more details in the contract. Our first surprise was finding out that nothing was budgeted for basic fixtures that come in a bathroom, like a toilet, sink, mirror, lights. This is okay if you understand it up front. Another example of Rylie's poor communication skills. Some of this was my fault as I tried to get an explanation of what was and was not included, but since this was my first major redesign, I was inexperienc
