Gas Furnace / Forced Air Heating System Repair Service
$4,800
American Home Shield sent this contractor to my house to troubleshoot the gas pack system. Diagnosed the unit was bad and obsolete. Recommended total replacement through American Home Shield. They did a great job, explained everything that needed to be done, explained all my options of what was not covered by my policy and saved me $700 by using a pad to set the new unit on instead of a platform due to it not being in a flood zone anymore. Unit is working great and the house feels nice and warm.

They replaced our unit. They did an excellent job. Everything was timely, great communication. That was last year and we have had zero issues. Today (a year later) I called to see if they could walk me through turning off the power to the unit so our security system tech could hook up a new thermostat. Normally companies nickle and dime for simple stuff like that but he took a few minutes to tell me exactly what to do. What a wonderful company. Thank you!

They were at our house March of 2021. They replaced the AC compressor. The compressor died again 18 months later in August 2023. Now July 2024 the unit stopped working. Updated: although I do not know if it is the compressor that is not working this time, they are supposed to last longer than a year. The technician also told me that it wasnâ t them who installed it initially but I then had AHS confirm that it was them. Someone else will be by to service it.

Made pilot burn so hot that it has used 20% of gas and heater has not been used, just pilot light. We usually have pilot lit year round and it does not burn but very little. So now we are out all this gas that we have to pay for and they are like, well you will have to get someone else to come out and fix it.

If possible, I would certainly give R and K Heating and Cooling less than a 1-star rating. On July 17, 2020, my home warranty sent them to my home to check my air conditioner, because it was not cooling properly. After about a 30-minute visit, I was informed by the technician that he could not find anything wrong with it, and the problem was because it was so hot outside, the air conditioner could not keep up. When the temperature dropped at night, my thermostat was still showing 4 degrees warmer than what it was set on and ran constantly. The same company was sent again on Tuesday, July 21st. This time, I went outside and stayed with the technician. He was at my home for over an hour and informed me the capacitor was weak and the unit needed a pound of Freon. That should have been found the first time. Since then, the air conditioner has worked perfectly. A few weeks later, the air conditioner of my daughter quit working completely. She has the same home warranty, and they sent the same company, R and K. Because she was not feeling well, I met the technician. He told me the TXV valve and the fan motor in the the air handler was not working. He thought the valve broke causing the fan motor to quit working. I asked him if the warranty would cover the repairs and parts, and he said, *Yes.* NEVER once was Freon mentioned. He stated it would take about two weeks to get the parts and complete the repair. The next day, my daughter received a message from the warranty company stating that there were limitations on what they would pay. She called R and K and was informed by them that the warranty company would only pay $10.00 a pound for the Freon, and she needed 8 pounds. Then she was informed that she would have to pay $560.00 out of pocket for Freon before they would start the work order and said the Freon had to be removed because of the type of repair. That was in addition to the $80.00 the warranty company would be paying. That is $640.00 for 8-pounds of Freon - - $80.00a pound! (Twice the competition) I knew something was not right. My daughter called her brother. My son investigated with friends that are in the business and also called Robert, the owner of R and K, and questioned what he was doing. Robert said, *The Freon must be removed, and it is my policy to never capture and reuse the Freon of the customer*. (How convenient). He then went on to say, *If you do not like the way I do business, find someone else.* My daughter did just that. The warranty company sent another company for a second opinion. Who would have guessed? All that needed to be done was to replace the fan. The valve was good and the Freon did not have to be removed or even topped off. Two days later, her air conditioner was repaired and is working great. My son called Robert at R and K and told him how he felt about what had happened. The response of Robert was: It is fixed, is not it? I do not know how anyone with this attitude and poor business practices can stay in business. I do not know how he can sleep at night. Not only was he taking advantage of my daughter, but also the warranty company, because they would have paid him for a part that was not needed and $80.00 for Freon that was not needed. This review is on the Greenville, NC office ID#67730215. The customer service representative I spoke with at HomeAdvisor suggested that I tell you that R and K also have a Winterville, NC office (ID # 51623950) that is...

Iâ ll start by saying that I had service done by R&K based on their selection by my home warranty service provider. I took no part in their selection for service. R&K came out to my house after I made a claim with 1st American Home Warranty due to my upstairs heat pump not cooling my house. It took about 36 hours to get them to my house. They came and conducted a quick diagnosis and determined that my unit needed a new pump, as it was leaking and all of the refrigerant was gone. About two day later I get a call from R&K stating that due to the age of my unit (~13 years old) they recommend to 1st American that my unit needed to be replaced. After waiting another day or so, I called R&K and inquired about the time that they expected the replacement to take. They explained that 1st American is generally slow and that it could take a couple weeks. RI explained to Robert (the owner) that the temperature of my upstairs was in the high 80s and that none of my 4 children that sleep upstairs could withstand that for weeks. Robert quickly told me that he understood and that he would be willing to come put some refrigerant in the system to hold us over for a bit. He did this without charge. (Thanks Robert). That did the trick. We were once again cool. It took my 1st American about 3 weeks to get the unit ordered and delivered! Insane in my opinion., but not R&Kâ s doing at all. I was put on the schedule about 4 days after the unit arrived. Robert and 2 of his techs came out as scheduled and had the old unit out and the new one in place within a 3.5-hour time span! Very fast and efficient. Now for the â non-covered chargesâ . I was given a pretty lengthy list of charges that 1st American would not cover. They were: Permit 1 400.00 400.00 Electrician 1 400.00 400.00 Load Calculation 1 500.00 500.00 Digital Thermostat 1 249.42 249.42 Outdoor sensor 1 189.41 189.41 Drain piping 1 89.42 89.42 Unit pad 1 298.50 298.50 Secondary drain 1 198.12 198.12 Float Switch 1 148.92 148.92 Duct Modification 1 250.00 250.00 Total: $2,723.79 As you can see, the charges were heavily overpriced, especially if I were to be choosing my own company and paying out of pocket. Unfortunately, I was stuck in the situation where 1st American gave me this option or a cash out option. The cash out option was a complete joke. I did talk to Robert and was able to get him to drop a few of the charges and I was able to walk away with a new 2.5-ton heat pump for just over $2,200 out of pocket. I do understand that 1st American nickel and dimes independent owners such as Robert and that there isnâ t a lot of money to be made from them and that the homeowner is the one that needs to foot that bill. Overall, I feel satisfied. I was able to support a local small business and I was able to get a brand new unit installed for about $2,200.
